My sister gave birth yesterday to a baby boy. Yay !

Anyways, her and her hubby are thinking of naming him "Hovie". This is a reference to a famous gospel musician "Hovie Lister" who himself was named after a reverend Hovie. These references themselves, I'm OK with, but she is asking if there are other meanings or reference to the word "Hovie" that she should be aware of.

For instance I clipped this from a forum on a web search

I don't know if Hovie in this instance is a screen name or if there is a new meaning of the word hitting the pop culter that she should be aware of.

Please reply if you know of any meanings of the name Hovie, and let me know ASAP if possible.

It looks like Hova is Jay-Z, I did an image search & his face popped up a few times. Some baby name site said Hova was a girls name of african origin. Hovan is a male name from Armenia. Getting zip for Hovie though.

Ok, nothing else special sept a reference to Jay-Z as Hovie on some message board. A company called Hovie makes custom surfboards, & Hovie funeral home. Also found a dead link about someone called Hovie Munroe or Monroe Hovie.
Anything else I can do, just let me know.

Yes I got the Hovan name as well found. Russian/Armenian meaning "God's Gift" which seems a good enough refernce. I've suggested naming him Hovan, and using Hovie as a nic. That way if Hovie for some odd reason gets a weird meaning, they can stop using it easily.

I think naming the kid officially Hovan is a good idea, sometimes kids grow out of names ending with an "ie" or "y" such as Danny or Billy, etc.

Yeah I'd say Hovan is better than Hovie. Hovie sounds too much like Hoagie in my opinion.

Hip hop artists often use aliases and nicknames. The name "Hovie" in the above quote is a reference to multiplatinum selling artist Jay-Z and one of his aliases. Part of the hip hop culture is to rap in a bragadocious or arrogant way. Jay-Z refers to himself as J-Hova (Jehovah aka God ~of rap~) at times. Anyway, Hovie is just a variant of that name.
