haha, i heard somewhere that women have 10 times the pain tolerance of men, but that could be a total load of crap. I can't even remember when I heard it.

Wow, that was such a worthwhile and important post. Thank you for that wonderful insight...

So, I'm curious what design you want to get? Maybe I should start a thread where everyone show off their tattoos...

You don't think the hurt belongs to the tattoo?

I have a couple of tattoos. The first one was done with a home made gun and the guy doing it had done a few, but not alot. My second was done a few years later by the same guy with a proper gun. The difference was the first one hurt quite alot and I scarred pretty badly with the shading, the second one the outline hurt a bit but the shading felt like a slight burning sensation after awhile and really wasn't that bad. I guess I'm just trying to say, get a person who has as much experience as you can, it really counts.

Jackebear: I'm with you as far as unique goes. And it also helps if you have an idea what you want and print it out. Put it somewhere where you're going to see it everyday for a few months if possible and make sure it's really what you want. These suckers do not wash off easily.

If you're concerned about the pain you shouldn't be getting a tattoo. You're scarring you body for life, the pain is a reminder of that.

Honestly, don't worry about the pain. Yeah, it hurts, but it's part of the process. Pick a good artist with a light hand and you'll be able to tolerate the pain. The idea of gaining a piece of cool art or jewelry (in the case of piercings) can help you overcome the usually mild pain. I mean, I'm scared to DEATH of needles but I've sat for over 25 hours of ink (12 hours in one sitting) and I pierced my own frenum (google it if you're not familiar).

As far as a design, get something that means something to YOU. I can't stress that enough. Most of my designs are custom, or at least taken/modified from flash drawn by tattoo artist friends of mine. I'm almost guaranteed that I'm not going to see the same piece of work walking down the street on someone else's body.

And I'll second (third?) the recommendation to check out bmezine.com. Hang around there, and get a good idea of tattoos and the community that surrounds them. You'll learn a lot that will help you prepare for getting a piece of your own.

As for the weight loss issue, it is possible for tattoos to change with weight loss, but in my own experience (I've gone from 300 when I got my first piece to 235 as of my last piece) the ink didn't change THAT much.

Good luck, and feel free to PM or e-mail me with any questions.

Hey Linsdeylatch - I've been away for a bit. the design would be a two-toned fleur d' lis. I've experimented with the look with a small Chicago White Sox logo stick on and like the look. Two specific comments - one concern and one thought. the concern - will a tat on the underside of a dick have any impact on sensitivity, quality of erections, etc. - i don't want to negatively impact my johnny. next comment - the reason i want it on the underside is 'cause it would only be visible when wooden and i have a bet with myself that my wife of 20 years will never see it - ever ...

Holy crap... majik... you are the BRAVEST man I've ever heard of!

And all this stuff about tatoos is really making me want to go get one.... and I have to agree, I get really disgusted whenever some blonde anorexic bimbo leans over and there, above her thong which is above her ass crack which is above the waistband of her jeans... is *the* tatoo. You know the one... intertwined roses, maybe a few dolphins, perhaps a "celtic" design or, if she's "naughty," a "tribal." woooooooooo.... so not impressive.

I want Martel's signature on the outside of my foot just above the bottom- so across from the arch, basically. I'm his Goddess and I want his signature on his perfect piece of art! How's that for original?

The pain is in your head. Just because other people say it's going to hurt doesn't mean it will. I had my tattoo done in the privacy of my own home. I don't think I would of had it done any other way. I was really nervous, afraid of the pain I would have. I'll have to say he made me feel very comfortable. He told me on the phone that your lower back is an erogenous zone and it wouldn't hurt that much. Of course it helps that I thought he was cute in his own kind of way. He had a bad boy image I've never had before. Even as he was putting the tracing of the tattoo on my lower back, (A dragonfly, with the tail ending just at my crack). I was already turned on and not thinking about the pain. It didn't help that he had to do the tracing about 10 times. Resting one hand on my thigh very lightly. I think he was messing up on purpose so he could keep touching me. Of course I didn't mind! The position your in while getting the tattoo is very important too. He had me straddle over an ottoman while he was behind me in between my legs. I held on to a pillow to squeeze and to bury my face in to endure the pain. There was more sexual tension than pain. Just knowing that I wasn't wearing any panties and my ass was partly showing. At times he had to slide my pants lower. It was a total turn on knowing he was trying to sneak a peak at my goods. I was actually totally turned on. It was erotic. The needle is just a burning sensation that eventually gets numb. The burning stops when the needle stops. Of course being bent over with him between my legs, I was in my own little fantasy. Pain really wasn't an issure. I think just by him telling me that my lower back is an erogenous zone made it true. Just the way he touched me in preporation before starting the actual tattoo I have to admit I was already wet! Of course you can only do so much to a tattoo in one sitting I had to have the rest colored in later. The next time I met him at my sisters house so it would be more private to finish my tattoo. Of course the sexual tension was still there. There's just something to be said about being bent over with someone behind you. Your curiousity just takes over and you lose control of your actions. I just couldn't resist! I had to fuck him. My curiousity would of killed me. All of that sexual tension had to be released. I never thought getting a tattoo would be so much fun. I would definetly do it the same way again. I might even let my boyfriend watch.

Please people, do not read this and think this is what a quality tattoo should be. In a house? Not a sterile environment. Much less you know he was touching and looking at you more tha was necessary in a sexual way. This is really, really not smart. I feel bad not only that this was your experience, but that you wound up with an immature unprofessional artist that would act that way. Spreading this as a good story is not a good idea either. This should not have happened.

SinisterMotives - that's why it's important to check out the shop you go to.

My first was a bit surreal. The art took half an hour and we sat chatting while he worked. It just seemed odd to me that I'd picked one of the more painful spots (and yes, it hurt, but not enough that I couldn't handle it) and I'm sitting here having a civil conversation with a guy who's simulatneously inflicting this pain on me.

We talked about bikes, his old Sportster and my Dynaglide that I've since given up.

Tattooing is illegal in my state. Most people either get them at home or go to Dallas to get one. I don't ever plan on getting anymore myself. I just got the one because my sister and I had made a pact to get ours together.

ok... the title is "How much do tattoos hurt?" so I'm going to answer that.

I have two tattoo's (well, one complete and one not even close to finished, pictures below):

My first tattoo, a blue dragon perched on a rock with clouds

My latest tattoo.. a predator mask with an alien claw, completely original work. There's still roughly $1000 to do to this piece.

Now you ask about the pain. Honestly, it all depends where you get it done. My first tattoo was done on my left shoulder blade, and even though it was a little uncomfortable, it was nothing bad at all, just like a tingly sensation the whole time. My second tattoo is on the right side of my chest, with the alien claw going across my collar bone. The tattoo goes down ALMOST to my right nipple.

The latest tattoo hurt more than anything. I was surprised that getting tattooed on my collar bone wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, it was actually more of a tickle sensation than anything. But once my artist was shading the bottom of the mask, which is very close to the nipple, it REALLY hurt.

So in conclusion, it just all depends where you get it done. Different parts of the body will feel a LOT different than certain others.

i got a tattoo on my upper arm last Wednesday... i didn't hurt as much as i thought it would... its just a outline of a banner with the word DILLIGAF printed in it & some grey filling in to make it look better...

it honestly didn't really hurt. but a friend said it would have hurt less if i'd gotten a tan in that area first... apparently if your skins had to heal from sunburn or a tan it is tougher and the tattooing(is this a word???) doesn't hurt as much.

i'm at the scabbing stage now, OMG its hard not to scratch!!!

just pat it the guy said...

well let me tell you... that doesn't get rid of the itch!

edit: more helpful info from the TFP crew here...

Wow, what an interesting thread! I've been thinking of getting my sixth tat and just read through everyone else's input.

Short and sweet, my first is a custom tribal around my ankle, several years ago; my artist told me that's one of the most painful places but while he was doing his work I was looking through a magazine and already planning my 2nd.

Felt most like hot cat scratch at times where skin is thinnest over bone, mostly during outline phase.

Have one on each shoulder blade, only felt the scratch a couple of places on each one, just felt gentle pressure the rest of the time.

Recommendations: In addition to earlier comments about picking something you can live with and reputation/cleanliness of facilities, be sure to take good care of your work afterwards. Also, and I know I may catch some flack for this one, if you plan on ever working in a corporate/business environment, be sure your tat is someplace where you can hide it while at work. Unfortunately, regardless of a spotless reputation and business practices beyond reproach, there are still lots o'folks out there who will judge people negatively because of a tat or piercing.

A note about piercing . . . when I got my belly ring, after five decent sized tats, i was so nervous i nearly passed out! Have no idea why, since tat is so much more of a permanent commitment (and a much longer process than a piercing)!

I may post pics of my work in the place amonkie mentioned :-)

I've been seriously wanting to get a couple of tattoos for a while. I have a general idea of what I'm wanting. I like the marker suggestion and had never thought of putting the art where I'd see it everyday to see if I'd get tired of it. I can't decide if I want to do one at a time, or both at once. If I get one I have to get the other. I'm wanting something to represent my brother and my sister. I've decided to maybe put their initials in a heart. Also, I can't decide whether to put them on each shoulder blade or one on each ankle. I'm afraid if I put them on my shoulders no one will ever see them. I don't wear tanks that often, so I'm leaning toward putting them on my ankles. Unfortunately, like rockogre, I live in Oklahoma, but my mom may be moving to Kansas soon, so I could maybe get it done there when I go to visit....as long as I don't tell her first. My parents aren't too big on tats and piercings and stuff, but I really want to do this, and I know they'll get over it.
