Lost in New York.
My brother was supposed to arrive last night on a plane from New York. He went over there last week for a short holiday, and was going to travel from there to here to spend a few weeks with me before going home to England.
However, he didn't show at the Airport last night - The people there (after I'd waited an hour for all the passengers to exit the airport) said that he hadn't gotten on the plane. I've not heard from him by phone, email or anything - and I don't know whether to worry, or be angry or what to do. I'm thinking maybe he tried to get across town and missed the flight - after that he would have had to buy a new ticket (he was on a cheap ticket) and maybe arrange another nights stay at a hotel. I don't know if he has my phone number, and Dad is away from home on business (it would have been to late to call Mum who sleeps early) so hasn't heard anything either. The question I suppose, is at what point should I stop imagining all the 'safe' reasons why he didn't get on that flight, or call etc - and start seriously thinking that he's in trouble? And if he is in trouble, is there anything I can do to help? I mean, I can't call New York and ask if they know where my brother is can I? I don't know what travel company he was using, or what hotel he was staying at - I'm really not used to feeling this helpless. I hate this. |
so how have things played out since?
|
This happened last night - still no news. I'm going to talk to Mum+Dad later today to see if they know anything - don't want to worry them unnecessarily though.

you know the airline, yes?
they couldnt tell you anything? if not the airline at your end, maybe the desk in the ny airport he was to leave from? he doesnt have a cell (that operates in the states), i assume? |
I called the airline he was due to travel on but they couldn't help - he was to leave from JFK - but I guess if he didn't show (or hopefully just showed up late) I don't imagine they'll be able to provide any usefull information. I then called the airline that he booked the tickets with but due to Data Protection and all that, the guy on the phone wouldn't give any details.
No, he took a cell with him (which means he's probably got phone-numbers etc stored on it - so he could call, I guess - but hasn't) but it doesn't work over there. Up till now I've only heard from him (while he's been over there) by email - but the last one I got was on the 4th and the flight he missed was on the 6th. |
I'd say the most likely story is that he missed his flight and the cell phone has gone dead, which means, no messaging and no numbers as they're all stored in the phone. So he'll probably try and ring home (being a number he would remember). Wouldn't be too worried yet, wait and see what your folks say.

If you're still worried and it's been 24 hours since you last knew of his whereabouts, maybe you should call the NYPD and file a missing person report. There's also a number on this site (LINK) you could probably call to ask questions if you feel funny about filing a report about it. I hope it's just what superiorrain thinks it is and you hear from him soon.

Thanks for that link, it's been a tough day.
However, there is some good news - I just got this email: :) Quote:

He sounds like my brother too. I'm glad he's okay!!!
|
I am so glad that this problem had such a humorous ending.
"fũcking"? |
I've got an email filter that swaps u's for ũ's and e's for ė's etc when it sees them embedded in 'bad' words. It just means that if I forward a message it doesn't get bounced by corporate emial filters. He would have used the more traditional spellings.
Anyway, thanks guys - I'll tell you about the slap I'm going give him when I see him tonight! |
Happy to hear he's okay. Make sure you give him a good slap, then go for a beer. I think you deserve it.
|
Glad he's okay. I'd say you both deserve a beer. Unless he's feeling like too much of a penis face.
|
Happy endings are good. :)

Sounds like something my older brother would do... Glad to hear everything turned out alright! ;)
|
I echo the "whew" sentiments...your brother's a dope, but at least he's safe. :)
|
 Glad to hear that everything turned out well. Sounds like something my brother would do.
|
Well that's a relief for you. Did you get a few new grey hairs?
