Apparently this is fine in most of the country, but not everywhere, and not at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. According to an article, "A New Screen Test for Imax: It’s the Bible vs. the Volcano," in the New York Times by Cornelia Dean, IMAX films are acceptable, as long as they do not discuss biological or geological evolution, or the age of the universe. Some science center theaters—including the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History—are rejecting films that mention or imply evolution because of religious controversy. According to Dean, these theaters have variously rejected "Cosmic Voyage, which depicts the universe in dimensions running from the scale of subatomic particles to clusters of galaxies; Galapagos, about the islands where Darwin theorized about evolution; and Volcanoes of the Deep Sea, an underwater epic about the bizarre creatures that flourish in the hot, sulfurous emanations from vents in the ocean floor."
Ahh the joys of religious controversy destroying the ability to learn.

Weak... I really don't know what to say besides that one word... "weak"

It could also be because I haven't fully woken up yet.

[edit]

Quote:
"We’ve got to pick a film that’s going to sell in our area. If it’s not going to sell, we’re not going to take it,"
That makes sense... I mean if the majority of your market is of fundamentally christian origin, you're not going to sell a lot of movie tickets to people who'd rather hear about the universe being 6,000 years old.

I liked this quote though:

Quote:
But, should they indirectly censor science via the selection process for science films to please a minority of public religious beliefs? I think not. First and foremost, science centers have a responsibility to inform the public, and that includes exhibiting evidence that supports evolution to the public. Humans are related to other organisms on the planet. We share DNA with the critters that surround deep sea vents as described in Volcanoes of the Deep. If science centers avoid presenting the factual basis for the theory of evolution, they do a disservice to the public—those who question evolution and those who do not.
Should a SCIENCE center censor it's material? I think that's the real question here

It depends what the mandate of the cinema is...

If its mandate is to spread the gospel of science, regardless of the cost (i.e. they have an annual budget to screen whatever they feel is relevant) then it should screen whatever they feel like

However, it it has to turn a profit (i.e. be self sustaining), they should be conscious of their audience. A small town cinema that only shows art house films (read: foreign films) isn't going to survive. They need to be aware of what will bring in the audience.

This isn't the same as a the Science Centre proper not having a display about the same topic. Most Science Centre's with IMAX cinemas do not include admission to their cinema as part of admission to the Science Centre.

What about when Creationism is presented as fact? Lots of people hate that one, too. Things like this really piss me off. I know that museums have to make a profit just like anyone else, but not at the expense of science.

I thought satan was the one responsible for that.

Anyways, it's difficult for me to grasp how someone could dismiss all that evidence across so many scientific fields as a "theory". The knowledge gained from evolutionary theory is being applied in nearly every scientific field, founded new ones (genetics), and it is as solid a theory as any other. Moreso, in fact, because it has stood up to so much scrutiny and passed. The only reason I can think of to be able to ignore something like this would be to just not read anything on evolution and parrot whatever the rest of the creationists say. I just don't see how you could read a piece of literature explaining Darwin's origin of species (or the idea behind it) and then reject it outright.

Evolution is a theory. But so is our understand of Gravity, Relativity, etc... It doesn't change the fact that these theories have been tested and tested again and are generally accepted as solid working theories.

When I first heard of this "volcano censorship" I thought it was a joke. This kind of thing is going too far IMHO. Maybe if they just put a disclaimer in small writing at the end of the film that says:

"This film contains references to natural processes that may involve evolution and large time scales. The viewer is encouraged to decide for themselves whether it is the result of intelligent design or not."

I'm just kidding and I agree with the author that by not showing it we are doing a disservice to the public—those who question evolution and those who do not.

Weaksauce. But I can understand that they need to make money. I wish more would go so they weren't so expensive, otherwise I'd go every week. Imax is awsome, I've actually met someone who hasn't been to one before. If you havn't, you must!

It seems strange that the people visiting a science center would be offended by the idea of science films being shown there. Who are these hypothetical patrons who want to learn more about science, but care little about evolution, the age of the universe, deep sea life, and quantum physics? It seems likely

Fort Worth is a big city that is part of a huge metropolitan area; I doubt that there is a lack of audience for such films in such a large area, and I also doubt the people who would object are the kind of people much interested in coming to a science center in the first place. Why let the objections of non-patrons affect how you do business?

Having just been to the Fort Worth area... that's because it's in the Bible Belt. I have never seen more churches in my life.
