GM Discount question
 

Hi. I was wondering if anyone knew who exactly qualifies for the GM discount when you have a family member who works or worked for GM? I have an uncle, who is my grandfather's brother, who retired from GM and I'm attempting to use his discount a family member. From what I heard I wouldn't qualify because he is just an uncle. I'm wondering if I can get away with using him, still, to get my discount because he does have grandchildren and has I have the same last name as him - still. Does GM actually check into this or would I slip by with the discount? I'm looking at the G6 coupe by the way.
Any help or info would be great. If this is better to be posted in another section please let me know. Thank You.

GM is one of my company's customers. Thru them, I am entitled to the GM vendor discount on cars. I beleive the price I'd pay is 3 percent above dealer cost (or some percentage)

In order to qualify for the discount, paperwork has to be filled out that I do work for the company I work for. My family members also qualify for the discount. Family members, by defintion are immediate family, brothers sisters children or parents.

As a vendor, paperwork needs to be filled out, and I'm pretty sure they'd check. Family discounts, eh - they might, they might not.

That's the way I understand it as well. I have a lot of family that work for or are retired from GM. When we bought a new car in 98, we had to have my dad fill out a portion of the paperwork stating where he worked and such.

I did hear that grandchildren qualify and that's what I'm "attempting" to pass as long as they do not go into all the details of my family tree. *Smile*.

Technically you are a grand nephew, not a grand child.

All you can do is try. But I'd be honest about the relationship, don't say you are a grandchild if you aren't.

Why not have the car bought by a legitimately elligible family member, then buy it from them? No guilt that way....

Good idea but I just want to lease the car - GM cars have a tendency to "fall apart" as the age quickly. I just want the G6 coupe for about 2 years and let someone else deal with the problems to follow.

I see, so all you are trying to do is "get over" so that you get the best of the best, and screw everyone else.

Seems to be a pattern here....
1) pretend to be a relative you aren't to get the family cut rate
2) only keep the car a short time, then pass the inevitable wear and tear
expenses onto someone else.
Don't mean to flame or anything, but there must be something legitimate you can do...the more you try to screw others, the more likely it's gonna come back to bite you in the ass.

Yeah... while that may be how you feel, it's probably best NOT to mention that when you try and get the car, just thought I'd mention that.

As for the discount, as far as I've ever heard it's just immediate family, perhaps sometimes extended family such as grandchildren, but I doubt that you (as a grand-nephew) would apply to it.

Now I haven't looked at the policy in a few years - -but last time I saw it - leasing wasn't an option, the car was to be purchased, and you got the financing on your own. That may have changed in recent years but...

Financially, leasing a new car for a couple of years is the worst way to do it. Cars depreciate the most during that time period, and by leasing, you're paying for that depreciation.

It's at about the 2 to 3 year point that buying makes the most sense; the car still has a lot of life in it, but you don't take the big hit on depreciation. If you're going to go for a new car, the best way to do so financially is to buy only if you're going to keep it long term, for at least a couple of years after it's paid off.

Leasing new every 2 - 3 years, or buying new and trading in after 2-3 years is how you spend the most money on cars. Buying after someone else takes that depreciation hit is how you spend the least.

Bought my last three vehicles that way. The only way to go.

And yes, the GM discount only applies to new purchases, not leases.

I agree completely, that way just seems to make the most sense. I don't think I'm ever going to lease a car, it just doesn't seem to make any sense. Yeah, you get to drive a "new" car every few years, but for the amount you have to pay and to not get anything back? It's just better to do it the way Gilda explains.

Right now, GM is basically paying customers to take cars off their hands. They haven't made a dime selling cars in years. If it weren't for GMAC/ Ditech etc they would have no earnings whatsoever. So I can't imagine they will be real picky.

GM does lease cars in Ohio at least. I didn't feel like explaining my entire situation but I'm keeping my other car as a work car, that is fully paid off, and leasing a G6. Sorry this entire subject got into a moral shuffle about lying to a car dealer - even though they swindle everyone. I know I know - two wrongs don't make a right. I'm being cheap - leave me alone.

if you go through a leasing company, then you can use the family discount towards your lease. this is in Texas. i don't know how it works in other states.

I think the family discount can really be used for anyone - but the employee can only dish out the discount to so many people per X time... - but i dont know those details

Speaking as an employee of a company that GM contracts most of it's lease work too(and writing from my cube), GM discounts are available to the employee and immediate family. As far as I understand it, the price you pay is set by GM. Don't forget the incentives though, a lot of cars have another thousand or two knocked off the price. I forget the site that has those listed.

However, it is also given at the discretion of your boss. I know ours has to issue an authorization number before anyone gets to use it.

I wouldn't worry about the GM discount since it really isn't that good and you can do better with just a little negotiation.
