WICHITA, Kan. - Police said Saturday they have arrested a man they believe is the notorious BTK serial killer who terrorized Wichita throughout the 1970s and then resurfaced about a year ago after 25 years of silence. They also added two more victims to the roster of BTK victims, linking two new murders to the case.

"The bottom line: BTK is arrested," Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams said at a news conference in Wichita with some of the victims' family members.

BTK investigator Lt. Ken Landwehr identified the suspect as Dennis Rader, a 59-year-old city worker in nearby Park City, who was arrested Friday at his suburban home.

Rader served on both the Sedgwick County Board of Zoning Appeals and the Animal Control Advisory Board, according to the county's official Web site.

i remember seeing this on "America's Most Wanted" a very long time ago. i'm just kinda shocked they managed to catch this guy after such a long time. At least now those families can have some kind of closure.
um...way to go, Kanas police.

Great they finally caught the guy but....

What the heck does BTK stand for?

They've had this on the news all day but there's very few details. I wanna know - who is this guy? What's he all about? How did they get him?

Bacchanal 02-26-2005 04:25 PM

Being from Wichita I really hope this is the right guy. They had who they thought was the right guy a little over a month ago, but evidently it wasn't, and he was released. This is almost all that's been on the news today.

Just slightly more detailed report for those interested. From here.

"BTK Is Arrested"
Wichita
KAKE News

Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005

Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams announces an arrest in the BTK killings. In a morning news conference, Williams said, "The bottom line...BTK is arrested."

Sheriff Gary Steed says his department has also closed the investigation into two unsolved murders, Dee Davis and Marine Hedge. The newly attributed slayings occurred in 1985 and 1991.

Police arrested Dennis Rader Friday. Rader is 59-years-old. Wichita State University records show he graduated in 1979 with a degree in Administration of Justice. He was a municipal worker in Park City, Kan. and was arrested Friday in Park City, where searchers spent several hours at his suburban home.

The killer known as BTK has been linked to eight unsolved killings in Wichita from 1974 through 1986. As of Saturday, he is linked to 10 killings in all.

His self-coined nickname stands for "Bind, Torture, Kill."

BTK went silent for years until resurfacing last March with letters to Wichita media and police.

Police aren't saying how they identified the man man arrested in connection with the BTK serial killings. A source familiar with the investigation says surveillance gave police their "first big piece of evidence" leading them to the suspect.

Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius tells the Associated Press that officials familiar with the case have told her that DNA evidence links the suspect to the killings.

No charges have been filed. Prosecutors say the death penalty won't apply to any crime committed before 1994, when the death penalty was introduced in Kansas.

Im glad they caught this fucker, I remember him scaring me when I used to watch America's Most Wanted. But I would never watch that show by myself it gave me the creeps, I hated the narrator's voice...

Painted 02-26-2005 05:02 PM

This matter does not concern me at all. I can factually say, "I don't fucking care".

ShaniFaye 02-26-2005 05:09 PM

They actually ran a special on this last weekend on A & E and we watched it, Id never heard of it before..which is strange as much true crime stuff as I collect. Im glad to see they made an arrest.

If it doesn't concern you, then don't clutter the thread with useless nonsense.

If this is the right guy, I say they shoot him like a dog in the street.

Cowman 02-26-2005 07:48 PM

Im kind of interested in this stuff and have read about the case before so I find it really interesting. I hope it is the right guy, but at the same time its kind of sad to see the "mystery" being closed...I know that sounds really disrespectfull to the families of those killed and I dont mean any disrespect..but still..

SecretMethod70 02-27-2005 01:35 AM

There's a video report here: http://ksn.com/news/stories/7036051.html
Can't say I think the report is good - talk about tainting a jury pool - but it's interesting nonetheless.

They shoot dogs in the streets? Since when?

I think its important to note that this is still the "suspect" in the crimes. I really hate to think of what might happen to that man if he actually is innocent. His name, face and address have been beamed across the airwaves in practically unlimited languages and timezones...

It's strange, but I hope for his sake that he's guilty. He's dead meat either way.

drakers 02-27-2005 09:17 PM

I hope he is guilty, especially for the relatives and friends of the victims, because they have already been through enough. It is so easy to try and put a face to a killer, but when you actually see it it's like you say, "what the hell, this guy is the one causing all this pain." I know when I saw his picture I said to myself, "well know matter whether he is guilty or not guilty this guys life is pretty much over." It is so hard to understand human nature because everyone is so much different in everyway.

I know exactly what you mean - that's the very thought that crossed my mind while watching the news report I linked to earlier in this thread.

I feel sorry for you since you don't seem to be able to understand figures of speech. Maybe you could get some help for it. Good luck with that.

Squishor 02-28-2005 12:25 AM

The funny thing is, according to one report I read, Mr. BTK apparently did shoot someone's dog in the street. Odd.

Oh, I understood it all right, but I was questioning what it literally meant.

kurtisj 03-02-2005 08:14 AM

This stuff interests me alot, i bet he wishes he didnt come out of hiding though, by the sound of his name he was fairly gruesome.
