american geography/surveying history
i need some help..
theres a surveyors line that runs across the USA that was done way back ..starts in MA, and goes across the country. the line was named after the two surveyors that surveyed the country... from memory, it divided nth and the sth states? i cant remember exactly, but been trying to look for it lately but cant find it?!!? its called The "something something Line" insert name of surveyor where "something" is... sorry im not american, so excuse my ignorance on this topic. anyone have a clue? thanks |

I don't know for sure that it was a surveyors line that the Mason-Dixon was made. If it was, it wasn't a North-South divider. Many say it was the North-South divider; but that wasn't really a line that could be drawn. Originally, the line started between Maryland and Pennsylvania, going west.
N-S divider lines ran more between the states: VA vs WVA; TN/KN vs OH. I have family members that argued it out in MO and IL(Union v. Confed.), living in-state. And then you have the western states, or territories, that really didn't want any part of it. |

being an aussie and all, i do have trouble remembering all fifty something states americans have, let alone the abberviations..guess i tried :) ...all we have is a 5 states and 2 territories..(and even then i had to count them in my head ) anyways thank for your helps guys, ive googled it, so thanks heaps :) |
thomas pynchon wrote a fairly cool novel about mason and dixon. that's what it is called.
