Valentines (i know, i know)

I know that there are a lot of other "what should I do for valentines?" threads going, but I feel like I would steal their thunder if I posted the question under their thread. Anyway, My current girl and I have been dating for a little over five months, and I am looking for something small and special to do for her. I am already taking her to see her favorite singer (josh groban, agh) on the 18th, but I just wanted to get her something small and nice. I am just wondering what others had to say.

*sigh* I tried to get Homey_V to do that last year, except Josh was actually playing right on Valentines just outside where Homey_V lives. Sucks to be poor..... ( I saw Josh on the 17th where I live instead )

Anyway, if you just want something small to go with that, or for the actual day: perhaps a single rose and a card (make sure its not too dumb...) or whatever her favourite flower is; bake her some cookies; frame a picture of the two of you (maybe even decorate the frame yourself).

I always feel like making something yourself is the best bet.

I like the idea of a guy inquiring about this rather than a girl :-p. Let's see, if you are into poetry, you can either write a poem or hand write a very popular love poem and give it to her, together with some fresh flowers, assorted colors would be nice and some cookies, you can bake them yourself and decorate them with cute little hearts and such. I am sure she will love it. Good luck.

How about a nice mouse skull? I know I'd be thrilled if my boyfriend gave me one. Really, I'm quite serious.

Or my weird next door neighbor from years ago....

I guess it all depends on how serious you two are. Five months is....five months. Either way, I don't think it's what you do, it's more important that you do it together. Fill the day with stupid little expressions of your love. Make her little heart shaped pancakes. Take her to the park, to the lake, on a walk. Take her to the show and hell, since it's Valentine's Day spring for the junior mints and show her she's speh-chul.

Whatever you do, do it together. Isn't that more important than some hokey pair of bears that kiss when you put them together?

You could always make her a mixed cd with her favorite songs.... Or dedicate one on the radio on her favorite station....

For little things, as a woman, I always like it when the man I'm with shows how much he loves me in public ways, especially early in a relationship. Its easy to be sweet in private, but things that show the world he cares are really hard to beat.

It doesn't even have to be expensive, or cost anything at all. In college, my ex wrote cute little notes on typing paper and posted them all freakin' over my dorm's common room and all over the student union where I usually had lunch, and on all of my classroom doors. They were simple: Happy Valentine's Day, Bryn, Love Jay.... The kind of messages that you find on those nasty, icky, cheap little candy hearts you can get at Valentine's Day. It was really, really sweet. We did the usual dinner thing that night, but it brightened up my day considerably.

I was a little intoxicated last night when I made that flippant remark.
It's true though, I would love to get something like that. The point is, everyone does hearts and cutesy stuff but they are not always a perfect recipe for happiness. Not every girl likes cutesy stuff, that's all.

Is there a particular song by this performer that she really likes, maybe the words of the song are really meaningful? Frame the song... (using a fancy font, and nice paper, print out the words, put it in a pretty frame -and tell her how the song reminds you of her -- (or something like that) Josh Groban doesn't do death metal does he? Then that might not completely work.

No, Josh Groban is a classical singer (yuck). Thanks for all the good ideas all. You've really helped.

Put a nice picture of yourself or (better yet) the two of you in a nice picture frame and give that to her while you're at the concert. Slip a secret love note behind the photo and don't hint about that until the end of your day together. Keep the note very short and easy for her to whisper back to you in the future.

I say the key to this is to make the gift personal and not generic. Pick something that she perhaps has mentioned liking in the past or something that only YOU would know about.

When I first started dating my wife I had been seeing her for just shy of a month when we had our first Valentine's day... I typed up (yes typed... this was before computers and printers were ubiquitous) a book of coupons with things like:

good for one dinner and a movie
good for one walk in the park
good for one back rub
good for one anything goes

You get the idea... the thing she liked most about it was that I made it for her (you probably don't have any idea how troublesome a fricken typewriter was).

I would suggest you get creative and make something for her...

A year or so later, I gave her a smallish heart shaped box that I filled with slips of paper onto which I had pasted the letters L-O-V-E cut out from magazines and newspapers... "A Box of Love" to bring her up whenever she felt down... She still has the damn thing.

Young love and especially early love is a very sappy thing indeed...
