I'm sure you can find your local SCA chapter on the web using a google search. Hell, Calafia should be enough.

I did renfest for 5 years but I didn't have all the time SCA demands.

I'm not a member... but I did have a friend who was a card carrying member... he used to trip me out with some of his weapons and armor.

hey lebell, I know, I've looked everything up everything on the internet. Thanks though. I was mainly looking for people on TFP that might be from calafia. I was kind of turned off by it because of all the time you're supposed to put into it, like you said.

Well, you can do what I did and just do renfest. Putting your costumes together and attending those around the area (or country) will take far less time.

I don't have the time for SCA, but I am a NERO member. It's another live RP, much more flexible. Most of the local chapter members also do SCA.

Well, the best of description I can give is... SCA is a group of people across the whole country that live normal lives but in their spare time reinact, I think, 16 th century type of living. They hold events and if you look SCA up on the internet, they have renamed the intire US. It's really interesting if you 're into armor, swords, corsets, etc. people really get into it, like for example where I live, southern CA and Las Vegas, that section is called calafia, and there is a baron and baroness that are the "royalty" of that area.
It's really fun, I'm still learning myself so if anyone wants to prove me wrong on anything i just said go ahead!

Just to expand on that good explanation,

The people involved in The Society for Creative Anachronism (pronounced SCA) form groups or 'guilds' to recreate whatever aspect of medieval life interests them. Some people like to fight with swords (non-lethal of course), some like to brew ale and mead, some like to sew, etc.

SCA is nation wide but to the best of my knowledge, it is a loose confederation of individuals with no "Business" ties. As BG mentioned, they've divided the US into "Kingdoms" and "Baronies" and each area elects its own "rulers" from among their membership.

The link is totally safe and very interesting if you've never encounter SCA folk before

I don't have money nor time to get really into SCA stuff. We have several groups and types of historic societies in here, not just SCA (some are into vikings & Finland in iron age), but many of the other groups whine SCA has too romaticed image of history and that they don't do things authentically enough. Everything is measured based on how AUTHENTIC it is. They all take things too seriously. That's the same problem I have with kinky communities: small inwards turned circle of fantical people who use tons of money and fight among themselves about how to run their little society or social schism after people have found a partner in that group, split up, found a new one.. and eventually everybody have something nasty to say about each other. I still belong to rpg convention organiser group & university's rpg association, but otherwise I have gotten enough of it for now.

Wow, i'd never seen that before. I guess in the UK we have Sealed Knot, who reenact Civil War battles, but i'm not aware of the whole lifestyle thing. Briefly looking at that link, i don't get much 'being a serf and dying of pox aged 26' vibe. I guess everybody wants to be the baron

The SCA is everywhere now. Esp. in the US and the UK.

They also assume that you are 'noble born' etc.

The SCA community has all kinds of people, from the fantasy people who see an opportunity to dress up like Conan, to serious 'reinactors' who try to do everything authentically. I think they have something for everyone, as long as you can tolerate some behavior that might make you cringe.

SCA is really fun if you can get into the right group ie. one that's in line with your interests, with people you get along with. I learned how to brew beer while with a group. It's also a lot of work, as you are expected to be as authentic as possible with your costume, name, and personal history. I wish I could find time to stay with it, but that's the way it goes. I would really like to train for melee fighting. People fight with padded representations of swords, spears axes etc. and wear armor. Real armor. And they need it! People walk out with large dents everywhere. Last melee I went to the master at arms challenged all comers during a break in the matches. No armor, one handed, just a sword. "killed" everyone easily, often with just a block and attack (reposte). Turned out he had a black belt in kendo.
