stuff from trees
I found this and thought it would be a nice little reality check for any tree-huggers that may be around here. others may find it interesting as well.

if anything, the fact that wood is so useful is an argument for making sure that forests are managed sustainably (that is, so that they won't run out in the future). Even though cash is very useful, that doesn't mean you try to scrape every bit out of your bank account--you save some for the future.

I know this is slightly off-subject, but I think it's cool and funny that Stanford has a person dressed up in a big tree suit for their sports mascot. They do a thing where he runs up and down the aisles and everybody hugs him. Get it?

I agree, but to many people, "Managed" means untouchable. if it was up to the "seirra club" types, we'd all be wipen' our asses with plastic or sheet metal. I perfer my Charmin.

Well, if you've got X amount of trees, and the resource increases at a very slow rate, and the demand for trees is constantly increasing (since the population continues to increase), does it make sense to keep hacking away at forests?
ART says we shouldn't sacrifice "at the expense of current human populations." But which would be better: to limit paper use now, and have prices rise 20%, or hack away for ten years and wait till the the price for paper goes to $6 a sheet? (Side note: ever wonder why fish/shrimp is so expensive? When 25 years ago you could feed your family cocktail salads for nothing?)

It's about sustainable harvesting and management of natural resources.
Some people will be shortsited (or just won't care) and will bleed the land/oceans dry while others see the wisdom behind not killing the goose that lays the golden egg. If the former is overwhelming then the government has to step in for the greater good.

Cellulose, the material that makes up the walls of tree cells, is used as a food thickener in such tasty treats as snack food, milk shakes, ice cream, cake frosting, and pancake syrup! so....ya man, they ARE delicious!

Clear cutting isn't nearly as common anymore and most times when clera cutting is done there is a whole new forest replanted in it's place. Many of the items listed above (btw - phtographic film is listed twice) are items that can be made from recycled paper, ex. toilet paper, papertowels, grocery bags, etc. I don't see any problem in harvesting trees. I do think that any harvesting should be followed by replacement. I don't know where I heard it but I once heard that the Native Americans (Don't know where or what tribe) used to believe that you shouldn't take anything at all from nature without putting something back. Even if that wasn't true that I'd heard that it is still a good policy. Even those people who are "Christian" should remember that we were told to be good stewards of the earth. We need to use things that we find on the earth for our survival but we also need to do all we can to replace that or to encourage the continued growth. I have given many public speaches on conservation in Wisconsin with the DNR. I would not call myself a tree hugger though. I go hunting and fishing and it doesn't bother me to see logging being done. I hate poaching for the sake of chopping off the antlers just to show off. I hunt (with a license) and we use all of the meat, sometimes the legs, and the hide as well. Very little goes to waste and we only take what we need. It's all a matter of being responsible with what we have and do.

okay, let's be a little rational.
yes, we need trees (cut down). they make life incredibly good. I am not going to say I'm a tree hugger and i'm not in PETA, But like animals, there are types that will soon be extinct. never ever to come back. and also the ammount we are cutting down is disastrous. oxygen, man. what would we do if we didn't have green trees/plants? most (not all) "tree huggers" are crazy zealots..... but some people, i call us Conservationalists, want to make sure we leave something behind so we can say 'at least we didn't destroy all of this".... i know a lot of people could care less, and i really do respect them... but we destroy EVERYTHING and some people really need to learn when Enough Is Enough. i'm all for housing and all..... cut trees down. but please do the major hindsight planning before cutting. |
