If this is true, is it a new low?

I cant actually believe this could either be made, or allowed to be made... but its reported:

"FOX is turning a grown adopted child's search for her father into a reality/game show called "Who's Your Daddy."

On the Jan. 3, 90-minute special, the woman will face eight men — one is her father, and the fakes' goal is to trick her into thinking they are.

If, after three elimination rounds, she picks out her real father, she wins $100,000. If she picks the wrong one, the fake daddy gets the big-bucks prize. — Post TV Staff"

Samalie 12-15-2004 02:45 PM

As an adoptee myself, this is beyond low. Fucking Fox should ahve their license revoked for bullshit like this.

What's next out of them? "Who Wants To Marry My Pigheaded Transgendered Adoptive Brother In Law?"

Of course, what else do you expect from Fox?

Ripsaw 12-15-2004 02:53 PM

Adults making adult decisions. Her business, her choice. Don't watch.

A network capitalizing on that fact that millions WILL watch.

Welcome to America.

Coppertop 12-15-2004 02:55 PM

Yeah, Fox gets my respect.

Because you can doesn't always mean you should.

FngKestrel 12-15-2004 02:58 PM

That's right up there with their "When Animals Attack" specials.

I'm waiting for the "When Animals Attack Who's Your Daddy"

Seriously, on my TV, the first thing I did was delete about 85% of the channels so I wouldn't get inundated with this crap.

Cadwiz 12-15-2004 02:58 PM

I don't have much to say about this other than, if it is true, I will be exercising my right to not watch.

Yup, best way to protest, usually up here in Canada, Fox's shows aren't at all popular and they aren't shown after the initial season. Good riddance.

Jimellow 12-15-2004 03:03 PM

Does she still get re-united with her father regardless?

If she doesn't pick her real dad and thus loses the opportunity at $100 grand, does she then become pissed at him for not "doing better in proving himself," and thus doesn't want to be with him after all?

Throw money into any situation and it will get shitty, fast.

Two things:

First - The "don't watch" thing is a great way of saying "shut the fuck up Fox" although if they get enough sponsors for the show, they may not care what you say. Money talks.

Secondly, you're right millions will watch, and what a repulsive reality that it. My gawd, a truly sad commentary on the state of American, and for that matter North American culture.

Oh well, I'm still waiting for the reality show "watch a television executive eat his own arm," but I'm not holding my breath for that one. Dare to dream...

Peace,

Pierre

JumpinJesus 12-15-2004 03:26 PM

While I'm sure this is probably a hoax, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to be real.

ICER 12-15-2004 03:28 PM

I agree it's low but as the saying goes "if you appeal to the lowest common dominator, you will always have success" just look at Jerry Springer

My form of protest is just not to watch it. And discourage anyone else from doing so. Of course if you really want to kick them where it hurts. Protest to the sponsors by pickets and banning. Because in the end. It's all about the money.

World's King 12-15-2004 03:28 PM

I'm gonna have my own reality show.

"The Guy That Lives In His Mom's Basement That Has No Friends."

It's gonna be great. You can watch me masturbate for and hour then I vote an empty can of Dr.Peper off my desk.

sadistikdreams 12-15-2004 03:33 PM

OKAY!
This is wrong.

Since I know alot of you are currently residing in the USA, you can do something about it.

While sharing your opinions on a forum like this is good, it doesn't do shit.

What you ought to do is call up FOX and complain. Most people would rather just sit and bitch then call up the station. Alot of people think it wouldn't work. Nobody is calling up the stations and complaining about these reality shows. That why they've gotten this low.

So, my challege to you:
If you don't like this show idea, boycott it, and call FOX. Voice a complaint.

Cadwiz 12-15-2004 03:33 PM

I thought you had an alliance with the Dr.Pepper can. What did it ever do to you?

Cadwiz 12-15-2004 03:37 PM

I think from previous discussion on the topic of complaining to the networks, it take s relatively few complaints to change the content of what they are airing. Which is good if you want to get something off the air. It is also bad if something you want to see might offend a few people.

Good point.

*Nikki* 12-15-2004 03:49 PM

Am I the only one who thinks that this is not really that bad??

Lebell 12-15-2004 03:58 PM

Nikki,

No, you aren't the only one.

Tasteless, maybe, but bad?

No one is forced to participate, no one is forced to watch.

Rdr4evr 12-15-2004 04:14 PM

Just when you think reality TV cannot stoop any lower, FOX proves us wrong once again.

It seems every channel I flip through has some sort of "reality" show that is just so incredibly asinine that it is beyond comprehension people actually view it. As if enough people are not stupid enough, they watch these shows religiously and become even more stupid (if that is possible).

But like some of you say, no one is forcing you to watch. It would be better to turn off the TV anyway and involve yourself in something more worthwhile.

Unfortunately this isn't going to happen anytime soon. Of all the addictions people bemoan, you seldom hear television among them. Quite telling I think. Unless and until people demand quality programming (why do you think it's called that, hmm?) this kind of shite will be aired. I hate the fact that my girl has gotten me to fall off the wagon and back onto the couch. Bleah.

Grasshopper Green 12-15-2004 07:07 PM

This is a first class example of why I don't watch television.

Ustwo 12-15-2004 07:58 PM

People felt the same way about who wants to marry a millionare.

Then it became main stream.

AquaFox 12-15-2004 08:25 PM

if this does go on air, i think it's complaint letter time, anyone with me?

Avail 12-15-2004 08:29 PM

If you haven't noticed, TV has been filled with the reality show craze. Amazing Race is on their like 8th season, Survivor has more seasons than I have fingers and toes (cough exaggeration cough). The worst so far has been The Swan. It gives a message that shows even if you look better, you're still not good enough.

Fremen 12-15-2004 10:08 PM

I just saw a promo on Fox an hour or so ago about this show, so it's going to happen.

Just like 100 Huntley Street, Ernest Aingley, Jerry Falwell and Jim Baker. And look where we are now!

I don't watch a lot of television these days and especially not "reality" tv, but I have to say....I'd tune in for that. ;)

The odds on finding a 'pigheaded transgendered adoptive brother in law' would be astronomical I'd bet. Maybe a reality show before the reality show like the open casting part of American Idol to find the 'pigheaded transgendered adoptive brother in law.' Come on, that would be fan-tab-ulous.

Just having a bit of fun.

On a serious note, you seem to single out Fox for programming like this. NBC has a plethora of disgusting "marry off" the nearest relative shows, not to mention Fear Factor, where we get to watch every combination of "average" joe square off to show their prowess at eating monkey testicles. CBS fares little better. They don't seem to have as many shows like this, but they kicked off this 'reality' craze with Survivor, which has to be, hands down, the most over-hyped show....ever.

Now Fox may have some of the stupidest (yes, I said it. stupidest) ideas for these shows, but all the networks are guilty of pushing this shit. Don't like it, don't watch it. I wouldn't hold my breath for the networks to stop pushing this crap. We love to delight in other's misery. Television gives us the medium to participate in the schadenfreudian (is that even a word?) experiment on a grand scale.

12-15-2004 11:36 PM

I have gotten rid of my television and cable service. It is shit for the mind. You, need to do more then simply not watch. Not watching is still becoming complacent to the way of life perpetuated by television. It is a controlling factor that teachs us how to interact with people, what to ask, how to speak, what to think and how to feel. In subtle ways the information that you absorb from TV works it's way into your lifestyle.

Ishmal 12-15-2004 11:46 PM

only in America...

no offence to any Americans here!

Nisses 12-16-2004 01:21 AM

tasteless, from title to concept

Dostoevsky 12-16-2004 04:45 AM

I don't know, it sounds like a pretty catchy show to me. You can criticize Fox all you want, but bottom line, they have to program shows that produce ratings.

If you want to place blame, doesn't it have to go on the viewers who support shows like this. Fox is just giving the people what they want, sensationalism, can you blame them for it? I really can't. After all, it's just business.

Macheath 12-16-2004 06:28 AM

Hasn't Maury Povich been doing something like this for a while now?

lurkette 12-16-2004 07:27 AM

This is pretty bad, but I don't know if it's a new low. I thought the one where 6 couples competed to adopt a baby was pretty bad. And "The Swan" is pretty awful. Frankly, when you're scraping the bottom of the bucket it's all pretty disgusting.

Cynthetiq 12-16-2004 08:03 AM

I'm currently working on some script technology that all the reality shows are using and I'm learing lots about the reality world.

First and foremost, yes this is real. It was in the trade magazines long ago.

Second, there's lots to be said for reality programming from a production standpoint.

It's easy to produce and doesn't require lots of overhead costs.

As far as them not replaying them after the first season in Canada, they don't really play them here either. They may get a summer rerun but that's very rare (only saw that with the Paris Hilton Simple Life show)

It doesn't take many millions to make a show a hit. Since the advent of cable tv, the demographics have become very fragmented and for a cable show to be a #1 hit it just has to get about 1 million viewers. Pittance compared to the broadcasts of the years gone by where 10 million people watched The Jeffersons.

water_boy1999 12-16-2004 11:42 AM

I don't watch TV for just these reasons. Ok, I do watch a little, but it is mostly sports and educational programming. An occasional movie or two.

I thought that "The Biggest Loser" was one of the most senseless and insulting reality programs. When will it stop?

aurigus 12-16-2004 11:50 AM

I saw a teaser for this show, so I know it is real (unless Fox is pulling a big one).

I think this is less harmless than shows like "The Swan"

tooth 12-16-2004 12:25 PM

I actually screamed obscenities at my television last night when I saw the ad for this show. Freaks.

Cynthetiq 12-16-2004 12:27 PM

this is no different than the daytime talk show subjects... it just happens to be molded into a different format.

laconic1 12-16-2004 03:18 PM

I actually laughed when I saw the promo for this. Of course I'm just a sick bastard who is easily amused.
