Woman Sentenced in Split-Personality Case

Wed Nov 17, 5:29 PM ET

Strange News - AP

FREEHOLD, N.J. - Nira Nevins said only one of her many personalities robbed a bank, but they're all going to jail. Nevins, 55, woman maintains that an alternate, childlike personality came over her the day she robbed the bank.

"I am so ashamed of our actions," she told Superior Court Judge Edward M. Neafsey on Tuesday.

The judge ordered Nevins to serve 18 years in prison for kidnapping the bank's head teller and forcing her to drive from the scene. He also imposed a concurrent 13-year prison term for the armed robbery of the bank in 2002.

Nevins must serve 15 years and three months before becoming eligible for parole.

A jury convicted her in August following a trial that included the appearance of "Jimmy," the child personality Nevins said robbed the bank of just more than $5,000.

Nevins' attorney, Paul Edinger, had argued she suffered from dissociative identity disorder, formerly called multiple personality disorder, and should be acquitted by reason of insanity.

She testified that she had considered suicide the morning of March 20, 2002. The next thing she recalled was being in a police car after the robbery.

But Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Jacquelynn Seely portrayed Nevins as a manipulative, intelligent woman who planned the robbery to pay off $124,000 in debts.

Jurors rejected Nevins' defense, saying afterward they believed Jimmy's emergence was faked.

It's incredible what people try to pull out to avoid it's responsabilities, good thing she was sentenced. But it got me thinking about what would happen with siamese twins if this ever happen. One of the twins kills another person without his brother help or previous knowledge, how would the judge rule?, he can't send him to prison as one of the twins is innocent. Kinda reminds me of a catdog episode where cat is buried with his egyptian master.
What are your thought's about this?

If she truly had mental issues then it's a shame she's being sent to jail instead of getting the help she needs. I didn't read it in the article but I hope they put her through a psycological evaluation to determine wether or not she was actually suffering from the personality disorders.

As for the siamese twins....that's just too funny to even contemplate.

So many jokes, so little time.... I'm taking the high road...

I'd agree that if a person is mentally ill, then they might not be responsible for their crimes. However, how do you really prove mental illness? If a person is smart enough, couldn't they 'fake it'?

Ever heard of the academic who spent 40 years trying to prove that Homer didn't write the Illyad, but rather another Greek with the same name? This woman did it, right? Or this woman did it. Whatever.

What if she threatens to commit suicide? Would it be a hostage situation?

If the personality that committed the robbery is a child, could she get a mistrial because she was not tried as a minor?

j/k

Granted, without more information on the trail I can't be sure of this, but I'm sure the defense at least had her undergo a psychological evaluation. Also, since the prosecution won which means they must not be completely incompetent, they probably had their own in house guy take a look at her too.

In a case without more evidence, I have to trust the evaluation of the jury in choosing which, if any, psyc evaluation they believe to be right. Its been a little while since I took abnormal psyc, but if I remember right then one facet of DID is that often times the main identity doesn't know anything about the other identities. Mutually exclusive was the term if I remember correctly, which since I didn't have the best attendance I very well may not. Also, to me one red flag is the 'appearance' of 'Jimmy' during the trial. It just seems very coincidental that 'Jimmy' happened to make an appearance in front of a jury. It is definately possible that it is real, but its also possibly staged as the jury concluded.

In any case, lock her up either in jail or in a mental hospital. If she goes to jail and really does have this problem, I have no doubt it will continue to manifest itself and eventually she'll get the help she needs. Its not ideal, but at least we don't have to worry about her OR jimmy robbing a bank and taking us hostage.

If you think about it, the conjoined twin question is pretty funny. But seriously, if the not guilty twin didn't try to stop the guilty one, he becomes an accessory.

LOL, in the article says a few years ago she tried to commit suicide... one wonders who was trying to kill who?

How would a siamese twin kill a person without the other twin knowing? But I guess it's a fairly analogy, except I'm not sure how separate multiple personalities really are.
