This one was rather small. No bigger than the fingernail on your ring finger. He weaved a huge web outside of my boss's bedroom one night.. we watched him all day.. tried to plant bugs on the web. We got a tiny little spider on it once, but it escaped RIGHT as this motherfucker dropped down like Tom Cruise to snatch him up.

He and his web were gone this morning.

Definately an orb weaver. Possibly a golden orb weaver.

he looks like a crab in that one above! v. cool pic.

Just another reason i dont mind eating crab.

They look like spiders, they move like spiders...but much tastier than spiders!

He's so cute! I hope he's happy wherever he is building his next home. Sorry, don't know what kind he is.

Tophat665 10-16-2004 07:39 AM

Munku's got it. It's one of the common Orb Weaver species. Used to have hundreds of these that would build webs from coaster through dinner plate sized in the laurel bushes outside the entryway to my folks house in Connecticut every night in the summer. Nifty little beasties. Help keep the mosquito population down.

Good snaps, Hal.

I think Orb Weavers are a good example of the perfection of nature. These creatures don't even have a brain (just ganglions), yet programmed within them are instructions on how to spin an intricate web whose geometric dimensions are ideal for catching prey. Crazy stuff.

Also, they aren't poisonous, but they can bite.

Those are pretty cool I had a picture of this enormous yellow spider but I could never figure out what it was. I found the thing in my back yard... that thing was scary.

pan6467 10-16-2004 10:44 PM

Cool pics I don't mind spiders as long as they are far far away from me.

But when I see one in the house I ignore it the first time I see it because I figure if somehow a roach or ant gets in they are toast because of the spider king.

mazagmot 10-17-2004 01:35 AM

Hooray for spiders!!

mrian 10-17-2004 02:00 AM

I just watched the fear factor were they had to eat african cave dwelling spiders yesterday, messed up.
