Broadcaster Goes Klingon, Says 'Qay'be"

BERLIN (Reuters) - German broadcaster Deutsche Welle has added Klingon, spoken by the bumpy-headed aliens of the "Star Trek" television series, to the 30 languages used on its Web site, the network said Wednesday.

The pages at http://klingon.dw-world.de/english/index.php were added to celebrate the site's 10th anniversary.

"The dialogue of cultures does not end at the edge of our solar system," Deutsche Welle director Erik Bettermann said in a statement.

Deutsche Welle is a government-funded radio and television network that broadcasts mainly for German expatriates and Germany enthusiasts.

Klingon was invented for use in "Star Trek" and has found fans worldwide. The Deutsche Welle site aims to make brushing up on Klingon "qay'be'" or "no problem."

I too hate Star Trek fans. In fact just this morning I kicked the shit out of a Starbucks guy who encouraged me to "live long and prosper."

I don't see much wrong with it; klingon may be the product of imagination, but it is a complete (albeit ugly) language. The site is offered in 30 languages, if they were to only offer it in klingon it might be a different story...

clearly just something to spread word of their site, and it seems to be working :)

funny, how a few years ago esperanto was gonna be the world language, now i bet more people speak klingon......

punx1325 09-15-2004 02:24 PM

I wonder if this guy knows the meaning of loser in klingon! I enjoy Star Trek to a certain point but he really need to get laid...

Fremen 09-15-2004 05:31 PM

The Original King heard to say, "Live long and Vespa". ;)

Mephisto2 09-15-2004 05:43 PM

Those crazy Germans. It's just one whacky idea after another.

First it's Ubermensch, then world conquest, then Klingon web-sites...

Whatever will they think of next?! :D

Mr Mephisto

PS - the_marq, I hope you're only joking about being proud of "kicking the shit" out of someone. That would be truly sad...

Rdr4evr 09-15-2004 05:58 PM

Off topic somewhat, my teacher knows the entire LotR language, whatever the hell it is called. What a waste.

Do you mean Elvish? I think Tolkein actually came up with several languages.

BTW, Star Trek is awesome and all that, but I can think of better things to do than learn Klingon.

You beat him up with your Light Saber :) ?

I'm a star trek fan, but actually wasn't as much a fan of the sci-fi but the story, so this klingon thing kinda makes me chuckle.

Actually (and here comes my inner geek), there are at least two, possibly three, complete elven languages that Tolkien came up with. The one that you hear them speaking in LOTR is Quenya. IIRC, Legolas's native tongue is actually Sindar. Wish I could remember the other one, but my geekiness is strong enough to get me through the Silmarillion twice, but not strong enough to put up with any more of Chris Tolkien's donnish butchery of worthwhile stories.

Technically, it's the other way round, Quenya was usually only used for formal occasions by Elves and the descendants of the Mumenorians during the third age (when LOTR is set), while sindarian was more commonly used as general speech.
Think of it as Latin and English, with latin very rarely used, while it's offspring, English, is used more readily.

But, nitpicking aside, the Klingon news site, while interesting, isn't really a new concept, as many other sites have taken it in as a language.
It is however, a small step towards the nerd taking over the earth...

tecoyah 09-16-2004 05:12 AM

Tolkien was a renouned linguist, and professor in this field (I believe). The elvish language is thought to be the most complete "made up" language on record, short of binary.
