480-pound woman dies after six years on couch

By Pat Moore

Thursday, August 12, 2004

She lived in filth, so large she couldn't move from her sofa, even to use the bathroom.

Early Wednesday, still fused to the couch, Gayle Laverne Grinds died following a six-hour effort by rescue workers who struggled to lift the 480-pound woman and get her to a Martin County hospital.

Unable to separate the skin of the 39-year-old woman from her sofa, 12 Martin County Fire-Rescue workers slid both onto a trailer and hauled her behind a pickup to Martin Memorial Hospital South. She died a short time later.

Sheriff's investigators questioned how Grinds lived in such conditions without more help from family or authorities.

"We're not treating her death as suspicious at this point, but we do have an investigation started because the circumstances surrounding her death are so unusual," Martin Sheriff's Sgt. Jenell Atlas said.

The Treasure Coast medical examiner performed an autopsy of the 4-foot-10 woman and listed her cause of death as "morbid obesity," officials said. Results of toxicology tests will take several weeks.

"I tried to take care of her the best I could," said 54-year-old Herman Thomas, who lived with Grinds in the duplex apartment in Golden Gate, south of Stuart. "I tried to get her to get up, but it wouldn't do no good."

He said the woman that he called his wife hadn't been off the couch for six years. No record of their marriage could be found.

"I wish I could have pulled her off the couch, but she wouldn't let me," he said, covering his face and sobbing.

Inside the home, the floor and walls were matted with feces, and trash was strewn across the floors, some which were bare concrete. Furniture was toppled, and pictures were knocked off walls.

Atlas said sheriff's detectives will look for potential "negligence issues" related to her care and death.

"We want to know what happened to her, how she ended up this way, and is she supposed to have been receiving any care," she said.

Rescue workers were called to the home at 8:44 p.m. Tuesday by Grinds' brother and his girlfriend, who reported the woman had trouble breathing and "emphysema problems." The crew initially tried to remove her from the couch, but the pain was too excruciating.

Workers wore protective clothing and installed large air handling hoses to ventilate the horrendous odor emitting from the home while trying to figure out how to get the woman and her couch to the hospital.

The street in front of the row of duplex apartments turned into a makeshift construction site as rescue crews used hammers and chain saws to build a large wooden stretcher with handles cut around the perimeter so firefighters could lift the woman and the couch, Martin County Fire-Rescue District Chief Jim Loffredo said.

After several failed attempts, including building one plywood plank that was too small to hold her, workers removed sliding glass patio doors at the back of the home, leaving a 6-foot opening large enough to get her out.

They slid the couch with her on it onto the larger wooden plank supported by 2-by-4 boards, which were slid onto a utility trailer.

"We couldn't get her in the ambulance," Loffredo said.

The trailer was hooked to the back of a pickup, leaving the scene sometime after 2 a.m., witnesses said. Grinds died at 3:12 a.m., still attached to the couch, officials said.

Neighbors who watched the lengthy rescue effort said they had never seen Grinds out of the home.

Jerry Thomas, who lives across the street for six years, said he has seen young girls at the home on occasion but never knew Grinds was inside.

"All we knew was the old man lived there," Thomas said. "I had no idea a woman ever lived in that house. Apparently she'd been on that couch a long time."

Unidentified relatives expressed anger at the scene.

"Family members are upset.... It's a difficult position," Martin County Fire-Rescue specialist Chris Wisniewski said.

Clifford Grinds, who is believed to be Gayle Grinds' brother, refused comment and slammed a door when contacted by a reporter at his Hobe Sound home Wednesday afternoon.

Court records show Gayle Grinds cared for a young niece and nephew after the death of her sister in 1992. Those children are now 19 and 15, but their whereabouts were unclear Wednesday.

"We are used to going to people's houses when things are at their worst... and that's fine, we're trained for it," Atlas said. "But there is no warning for something like this."

Atlas said a community policing deputy who worked the neighborhood a few years ago knew of Grinds but never had any dealings with her, and no deputy had ever been called inside the home.

In June 2003, 911 dispatchers received a call from the home for medical assistance, but Martin County Fire Chief Tom Billington said he could not reveal the nature of that call, citing federal medical privacy laws and the ongoing investigation.

The Department of Children and Families can intervene to help adults who are unable to care for themselves, but DCF officials said Wednesday they did not know about Grinds.

Christine Demetriades, agency spokeswoman for the Treasure Coast, said DCF has no record of calls to the abuse hot line or reports before she died.

It wasn't really the weight that got me, it was the environment in which she lived. When there's feces matted on the walls and floor, that's disturbing.

She didn't get off the couch for 6 years, enough time for the couch to actually become a part of her body!

Yeah, that stuff is crazy. If you ever watch Animal Cops on Animal Planet, you see that all the time where someone abuses an animal and has them chained up for so long that the chain actually embeds itself into the skin around the neck.

Sick, but at the same time, fascinating.

On another note, 480 pounds isnt all that much compared to a lot of overweight people these days, why didnt she ever get up in the early days atleast?
Im sorry i cant really post more but thinking about this kind of just pisses me off on how stupid that lady was. guess i need a sensitivity group, because i dont feel bad for her at all

That story reminds me of one I saw in "News of The Weird" several years ago.
Let me go dig it up.

**clickity clickity click click**

Huzzah...

Julia Schumansky, 64, of Hartsville, Tennesee, underwent surgery for a tumor in her left buttock. Instead of a tumor, doctors found a 4-inch pork chop bone, which they estimated had been there between 5 and 10 years. describing herself as "overweight," she speculates she must have unknowingly sat on the bone, and that the skin grew around it.

your right, 480 pounds isnt all that much for a normal person....but she was only 4 feet 10 inches tall. thats a shitload of weight to pack in such a tiny frame.

that story is pretty fucking sad and fucking gross at the same time. i could never imagine having shit strewn across the walls and floors...much less being literally glued to the couch for 6 years.

Yeah, I've seen people that are 400+ pounds that don't look that big. I guess these people are also pretty tall though. Being 4'10" would compact the body frame a lot, but it still seems like she should be able to move...especially if this weight problem degenerated through six years. Oh well, I guess we'll never find out the whole story!

What I don't understand is how the rest of the family lived with her. I mean the smell of feces!?! If it were me, I would have moved out and made her get up. She would either die of starvation or exert some energy and get up to eat... That is just a horrible situation for everyone in that family to deal with.

Well my initial reactions to this was also having no sympathy for her situation. I believe fully on the responsibilities of people and the choices they make. SHE put herself in this disgusting filth.. It was completely her choice and could have been completely her undoing. But then I began to think about the psychology behind her problem. She could have felt so hopeless and embarassed and ashamed that I could easily see why her reaction was the way it was... (Basically, to do nothing) It is an extreme case/situation but it operates on the same levels of typical responses.

I have to go with those who have no sympathy for her. I just find it disgusting. Nobody should let themselves, their friends or family get to that point, even if you have to put a gun to their head to make them get up. She has herself to blame for getting that fat but her family and friends are to blame for letting it continue on until this point.
They should be ashamed of themselves.

So um. . . .I take it your life is perfect then, or should we be equally heartless when you have a problem or twelve?

Sure, she brought it on herself (and btw she may not have brought the weight on herself - some people have a hormonal imbalance that makes them gain weight even when they're eating right and exercising) but I'll grant you that she brought the "I'm not moving off this couch" bit on herself. But so what? The homeless guy on the street may very well have brought his problems on himself but that doesn't mean that you don't sympathise with the fact that he has to sleep over a heated grate in 40 below windchill this winter.

When you get right down to it, you can say people brought a LOT of problems on themselves. That might, and perhaps should, factor into your thinking about what you will do about it (I'm not giving this wino $5 because he'll just spend it on booze), but it doesn't mean you can't feel for them.

It's a little thing called compassion.

I was surprised to find so much rude and heartless disrespect for that woman. It couldn't be more obvious that her only problem wasn't her wheight - there was obviously something very wrong with her/those who were caring for her if she lived like that for years.

Such a small body and so much wheight - I can imagine all the pain that must've been involved with moving let alone getting up...So much suffering for so long - atleast now she won't have to suffer anymore.

I hate when people use the hormonal imbalance excuse for people that get this bad. Yes, some people have hormonal imbalances and will always be a bit chunky. But far less people actually have this than we like to pretend...and even if you have that, it simply doesn't make you get *this* obese. You will be a little bit chunkier than the average person for your whole life with a hormonal imbalance but that doesn't mean you will consistantly gain weight.

I'm not saying my life is perfect - far from that. But if I do something unreasonable, I can usually tell that it's unreasonable. And I have had times where my friends had to scream at me to get me to do something I knew I should be doing and I was grateful for it later on. If my friend was in this state, I wouldn't let it go this long. After the first month (at the most) I would either tell her I'm not bringing her food anymore and she's going to have to get off her ass and get it or take some other extreme measures. You just don't let this happen. There's no excuses.

Wouldn't the easy solution to this problem in the first place be:

a) refusing food unless she got off the couch
b) bringing in some sort of medical professional

I don't get how someone can sit somewhere for 6 years. I mean, people must have been bringing her food and whatnot. I'm assuming that she was probably cared for, for quite some time- I think 6 years worth of shat would have probably been a bit more than what was in that house. I bet her caretakers abandoned her a week before this happened due to her obviously reckless, self indulgent behavior.

Call me cold hearted, but I have no compassion for people like this. Its their own fault.

Sorry, I hate to sound heartless, but I don't buy this. Sure, some people are more prone to becoming fat. But at the end of the day, it's that person's choice to chew and swallow more food than necessary to keep the body going. It's called self control.
