A Northamptonshire man who was fascinated with explosives blew himself up after putting a home-made pipe bomb in his mouth and lighting the fuse, an inquest has heard.

Kevin Barnes, 20, of Joseph Priestly Court in Daventry, took the device into his mouth and flicked a lighter as his petrified flatmates and girlfriend looked on.

The bomb, which might have been created using instructions from a book on explosives, then blew up, causing him serious head injuries, and he died on the same day - 13 July, 2002.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Northamptonshire Coroner Anne Pember said she was satisfied he had not intended to take his own life.

She said complications from a risky medical procedure meant to save him contributed to his death.

Mr Barnes was described as a risk-taker with a history of harming himself and the inquest heard he had a short temper.

His girlfriend, Elizabeth Elliot, said: "My opinion was that Kevin was mucking about but didn't actually mean for the pipe bomb to go off.

"People threatened to go to the police about it but Kevin was Kevin; nobody had the guts to."



I am stunned at this guy's stupidity.

This must be a contender for a darwin award.

Let's just be glad he blew himself up before he hurt anyone else. There's really no telling what a nut job like this might have ended up doing to society.

Yeah like trying to reattach his head. Maybe this guy should have his picture on a cereal box. Maybe Frosted Flakes.

He DID have his picture on a cereal box; and the walls, ceiling, floor, sofa, table lamps, and anyone who was near him; I wonder how well the witnesses will sleep for a while? TOTAL fool; glad he's gone!

i kno a few people around here that are like that...fellow highschool clasmate blew 3 fingers off with a homemade bomb...real smooth, for both this guy, and my class mate

(by the way, he kinda used the stubs of his fingers as a badge of pride/conversation starter...weird kid, but cool overall)

I wonder how this guy lived long enough to get to the hospital and die there. I mean, a pipe bomb in the mouth would most surely result in instant death or a whole lot of blood.

Thank God the rest of them were ok and didn't try to tackle him or stop him; one death is unfortunate but deserved, more would be tragic idiocy.

Its a pretty stupid stunt that's for sure. What in the world was he thinking to do and why didn't his friends slap some sense into him before he off'd himself?
