Mini-skirt row sparks school ban

The school's head teacher says parents are happy with the ban
A school has banned skirts because it did not want girls "going outside with a come hither look" after hemlines rose to "inappropriate" levels.
Kesgrave High School near Ipswich in Suffolk ordered female students to wear trousers after some turned up in minis.

Chairman of governors Margaret Young said they were impractical as well as immodest as many girls cycled to school

The Equal Opportunities Commission says students could have a case for unlawful sex discrimination.

The girls could claim they had been denied normal dress options, it was suggested.

'Dreadful'

Governors' chairman Margaret Young said: "Two years ago we sent out letters to parents asking them to make sure skirts were regulation length which is just above the knee.

"The impact was very short-lived and it wasn't long before skirts were very short again."

A high percentage of the school's 1,600 pupils cycled to school and such short skirts looked "dreadful" on them, Mrs Young said.

The school is obviously concerned about the sexualisation of young children but I think making all girls wear trousers is going too far

Martin Goold, NUT

She added: "We simply do not want our girls going outside with a 'come hither look'. I think many parents will find it enormously helpful."

Head teacher George Thomas said: "There's going to be a uniform that gives all the girls and all the boys an equal chance to access in an appropriate style a very active curriculum and to make sure there is no embarrassment when girls are cycling to school.

"We just think it's common sense."

Martin Goold, Suffolk divisional secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said: "Thirty years ago we were getting equal opportunities cases where neither pupils nor teachers were permitted to wear trousers and now we seem to have gone completely the other way.

'Parents happy'

"The school is obviously concerned about the sexualisation of young children but I think making all girls wear trousers is going too far."

"The move could invite difficulties with parents and pupils over what might be considered normal attire."

But Mr Thomas said parents were happy with the decision and that he had only had one letter of complaint.

Earlier this month, a male student at Ringmer Community College in Lewes, Sussex, wore a skirt to college in protest at "sexist" school uniform rules.

Its on the front page of google news for "England" section, haha, this is so awesome.

Mr Thomas was always a complete dick, his wife is the deputy head at the school and she always used to get pissed off with girls wearing short skirts!

Its even been picked up by the Australian!

No skirting school ban
From correspondents in London
June 21, 2004
A SECONDARY school has banned girls from wearing skirts because too many were wearing them indecently short.

The school is thought to be the first in the UK to take the extraordinary step of forcing female students to wear only trousers.

Explaining the ban, George Thomas, head teacher of Kesgrave High School near Ipswich, Suffolk, said: "Some girls wear really short skirts, not helped by the fact that not many practical skirts are stocked by shops."

"Many of our pupils cycle to school, and some of the things the girls wear are not suitable for this."

From September, girls at Kesgrave High will have a choice of two styles of dark-blue trousers.

The father of a 15-year-old girl said: "It's an extreme measure but I can see their point. But surely they could enforce a regulation skirt rather than ban them."

Ok, sorry - I wont post anymore, Im just excited. This is so funny!

Does the ban extend to men? ;)

I assume that this school has school uniforms? Always found that strange myself.

Sounds like someone porked their daughter or soemthing. Seems very knee-jerk to be of any normal reasoning. :)

maleficent 06-20-2004 09:50 AM

...and what happens when the girls start coming to school in super tight trousers? The tight pants might just accentuate their buttock regions or something.... oh what to do what to do

I know -- Burquas all around -- yah - cover their heads up too...

Strange Famous 06-20-2004 09:52 AM

yeah, nearly all schools in the UK have uniform

If they're wearing a mini-skirt and cycling to school.. I think they are well aware that people are going to try to look up their skirts.. if they don't then they really need to wake up and realize that us guys will, in fact, be horny. ;)

stevie667 06-20-2004 10:17 AM

I'm not complaining when it comes round to the schools around here, skin tight trousers are all good...

fuzyfuzer 06-20-2004 10:57 AM

we have discrimination in st louis private schools all the time a guy can not have longer hair while a girl can have it down to there waist if they wanted

it just never seemed fair to me

You probably all know by now that I despise dress codes and other unnecessary forms of control, especially those based on outdated moral objections to new things that older generations can't understand or accept.

Calling them "Impractical as well as immodest" is about what I'd expect, as it's the closest you can get to calling it immoral and sinful without causing an uproar.

timalkin 06-21-2004 07:54 AM

I appear to be the only one who agrees with the dress code restrictions. A school is supposed to be an environment where young people go to get an education and hopefully become contributing members of society. It should not be an amateur fashion show/stripclub where girls wear clothing that is too revealing.

Where the fuck are the parent's of these girls? It seems as though nobody cares anymore.

Just because you see something on MTV doesn't mean that it is appropriate or even acceptable in the education system.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with a dress code at all. Kids should be going to school to get an education, not a date for Saturday night. However, I do find it more than a tad hypocritical when they tell the girls that they can't wear short skirts, but trousers are acceptable -- and no word of what the boys are wearing.

Back when the dinosaurs walked the earth and I wasn in high school, the public school I attended had a dress code, boys had to wear collared shirts, no jeans, no shorts, other than that that was it. Girls, we had regulation skirt length, more than 2 inches above the knee was not acceptable, no shorts, no high heels, and no restricting clothing was how it was phrased (ie tight jeans)

Step 1: Ban miniskirts.
Step 2: ...
Step 3: Profit!

Seriously, I bet the guy is getting kickbacks from Levis or something. Better yet enforce a Catholic School Girl dress code; that'll DEFINITELY keep immodest thoughts from occuring... ;)

Yes I'm sure all the high school aged British boys are running around wearing tight, foppish pants and cod pieces that accentuate their manhoods.

That's what I'm thinking too. You'll never see a boy walking around showing a little cockneck. My old high school requires both boys and girls to wear the same outfit everyday. That sounds like the best policy to me.

ObieX 06-21-2004 06:43 PM

I went to a catholic grammar school and highschool and we wore uniforms every day (of course the girls wore skirts). I think uniforms are a good idea. Keeps people's minds off of "looking cool" 24/7 and instead kept their minds pointed more toward what they were in school for in the first place.
