Yes, it's sad. It is always sad when a family loses a beloved member, for whatever reason.

Some remarks suggest that since he was working, voluntarily, in the Middle East, he was in a way "asking for it".

There is a huge difference between actively "asking for it" and taking unnecessary risks in the pursuit of money. Both Johnson and Berg worked in places dangerous to both Americans and those who cooperate with them (not to mention that in Berg's case, it's not very wise for a Jew to go to an unstable Muslim country). Maybe the earning potential in their situations was great, but was it really worth it to risk their lives for money? Going on an interstate is a necessary risk and is nearly unavoidable, while going to a country where Americans are scorned and despised by many in order to try to make some money is a very unnecessary risk.

I dont know if this has been mentioned, but according to Newsday the Saudi government have killed 3 of the captors, including their leader.

That's what they say, yes. You're welcome to believe as much or as little of it as you like. Myself, I believe they killed three people. Whether or not those three people were just scape goats to try to make the US and others think they were actually doing something useful, I can't say for certain. But I'm not giving the Saudis much benefit of the doubt.

Obviously, I'm writing from an American perspective, but from their perspective, they took out a guy who was helping to put together and fix helicopters that were taking out and attacking their people. I don't know if they wanted him for that reason or just the blanket reason that he was an American and they wanted to make an example of him. Either way, he didn't have a chance after they aired that video.
If you are going to "look at it from their perspective", then you must add that they will also kill any Saudi or other Muslim who "cooperates" with the Americans, Saudi govt., interim Iraqi govt., etc.

They will also kill Muslims who don't agree with their particular sect and wish fervently to impose Sharia on all nations, including the US. (destiny, don't you know).
