Hey, there beautiful....
Everyone has a different idea of what beautiful is, kind of like how a judge defined pornography, some years ago. "I don't know what pornography is, but I'll know it when I see it."
Some folks say, I don't know what beautiful is, but I'll know it when I see it. Webster's dictionary defines beautiful as "Having qualities that delight the senses, especially the sense of sight. Excellent; wonderful." So, if I am a visitor from outer space, and I have no idea what this word beautiful means, use words to descibe beautiful. Tell what you think beautiful is...

Beauty is that feeling of warmth, and pleasure you get in seeing a thing. It is the most ethereal and flightiest of feelings.
I prefer to define pornography as : anything that will give a judge an erection

I would start with the natural landscape. I'd point to the limitless cloud-flecked sky, the complex leafy outline of a green horizon, verdant fields, and clear running water and say the word "beautiful." Then I'd point to any group of wild animals, the birds, running deer, wild horses - that sort of thing - and say it again, "beautiful."
The world of humans would be last on the list. The idea of beauty is best formed first in relation to the non-human world. Once the simple and uncomplicated beauty of nature and life can be appreciated, some of these sensations can be seen in men and women. As we are not normally visible in the natural state, I suppose I'd start at a naturist gathering in an outdoor setting. There aren't many things obviously beautiful about humans when we're dressed up, surrounded by, and defined by the accoutrements of culture - at least not without stretching the term toward its limits.

Beauty for some lies not in physical attributes, but in those intrinsic qualities found in each other that evoke emotive states we enjoy.

Beauty...something that, when you think back to it, you can't help but smile from ear to ear.

Code with at least three of the following:
- Consistent style of indentation, parentheses spacing and bracketing - Comments that help comprehension, not /* This is an ugly hack */ -- Comments that allude to sci-fi and comedy tv/movies/culture are acceptable if used sparingly - Code reuse - Some form of bitwise operations -- Usage of the term mask to fulil this requirement is acceptable even if it doesn't really have too much to do with a bit mask - Usage of the terms push and pop mmmmmm, sexy time EDIT: And wouldn't it be "Hey there,<pause> beautiful" not "Hey,<pause> there beautiful"?

This is a very good question and one I shouldn't answer while half-drunk and lonely.
So, my answer is this: Beauty is what ever you make it. It can be as simple as a pint of Guinness or as complicated as a rain forrest. In reference to humans... beauty is whatever you think it is. As an alien you wouldn't be attracted to what we have to offer and we couldn't explain it to you with no reference as to what is "beauty" where you're from. All in all... It's everything.

Yes - all beautiful.
I wonder though, if an alien would get some of the more subtle ones. I figure that by gaining an initial appreciation of the natural world's beauty we gain a sort of gestalt regarding the types of inner relationships, harmonies, and contrasts comprising the beautiful. I think that's what sensitizes us to the more subtle perceptions of beauty - elegant code or mathematical solutions, for example - or the other examples above.

This isn't characteristic for me to say but... everything is beautiful, if you think about it. And no, I'm not on any kind of drugs-- I don't believe in taking drugs for recreation. Think about it; I'll leave it at that.

I think beauty is more presentation then content. A "plain" woman who shows herself with confidence is more attractive than a "gorgeous" woman who lacks esteem. Attitude has a lot to do with how attractive someone is.
That said, I think one of the most beautiful things in the world is the smell of a cute girl as she walks past.
