Seven Deadly Sins
If you could retire one of the seven deadly sins, which would it be and why? What new sin would you add?
For clarification, those sins are: Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity. Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation. Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires. Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body. Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath. Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness. Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work <hr> I'm changing my mind after overhearing a conversation.... What's my new deadly sin -- Irresponsibility. :eyeroll: As the new god, next person who doesn't take responsibility for their actions, is going to hell, straight to hell, not passing go, not collecting 200 dollars. As the Eagles sang: I turn on the tube, what do I see? A whole lotta people cryin' "Don't blame me", They point their crooked little fingers at everybody else, Spend all their time feelin' sorry for themselves, Victim of this, victim of that, Your momma's too thin and your daddy's too fat, Get Over It! |
I think I would retire Pride. Because it's good to have pride to a certain extent. It you have too much, you'll be annoying but I dont think it should be a sin.
If I were to add one, it would be "Driving a Hummer" in the city. |
I would probably retire Greed. Although its good to have desire to succeed and have nice stuff, it's pure Greed that has led to many wars, companies going bankrupt, murders, etc.
I would add 'StupidMoronsWhoDon'tKnowHowToDrive' to the list. |
I would retire "Lust", I mean....come on.
My addition would be: Corruption- The need to screw anyone in order to gain power. |
I agree. Lust should go.
I would replace it with Ignorance. |
Lust should go. Really, all of them are fine in moderation or in certain situations. But lust seems like it has no real victim, though carried to an extreme it (or anything else) could be bad for the person experiencing it, or could lead to other negative actions. But I don't think it should be classified as a sin in and of itself.
I would add something like ignorance or righteousness. I think most of the ills of society stem from people's desire to be right and enjoy an oversimplified world view. |
i would get rid of greed and add apathy to the list
|
I think that they are all covered there.. it's just you have to think about it in depth as they don't just jump out at you.
apathy is sloth. ignorance can be a number of the above depending on the root of the ignorance. BUT I'm with lurkette, moderation is the key to all things. |
i see no problem with ignorance. We are all ignorant of many things.
It's willfull ignorance, and determined ignorance, that are the problem as I see it. I'm guessing that was how you meant it? |
I'd get rid of lust and replace it with going 45 in the left lane of a highway.
|
i say, scratch out lust and add stubborness/close-mindedness.
|
I would combine Lust and Gluttony, because they are the same thing.
I would add Apathy also, which I don't think is the same as sloth. Side Note- One night my roommates and I sat around tryign to represent which of the 7 we each represented most. I got Gluttony. My other roommates we Pride, Envy, and Apathy. Ys I know apthay is not one ...yet, but he didn't fit with any of the others and apthay fits him so well. |
I really don't see how you can knock out any of those. They all come down to immoderation of something which can be good, but isn't because the person wasn't moderate.
I was thinking of knocking out the sin of simony, but that comes out to "Greed" and strikes me as bad, too. |
Scratch out lust and replace it with dishonesty. When you are dishonest you end up having to cover up for your dishonesty and in the end may end up worse off then before. Plus you can hurt so many people along the way. Even unintentionally.
The occaisional white lie would be the exception. As in: "Honey? Does this make my butt look big?" "NOOO of course no dear." There's a reason for white lies but outright dishonesty with no thought for the other person. That pisses me off. |
Retire Greed.
Add Ignorance. |
I'd replace Pride, Lust, or even Anger with Deception.

I would have to total agree with raeanna74 on this one. I hate when people are dishonest then you have to cover that lie up with another dishonest lie. I hate it! One thing I will not tolerate is someone lying to me. It makes me very sad and angry. |

i read in the papers long ago that there was a rape in progress on a train bogey...all the people just went to the other end of the coach pretending not to notice what was going on...they didn't care enough to stop that evil... sloth is watching a boring soap opera coz you are too lazy to pick up the remote 5 feet away |
Retiring lust
adding deceit |
OUT: Lust
IN: Religious Intolerance |

You're gay, let the whole world know it! |
I just realized that I practice all of those sins on a weekly basis. Well, not so often Anger.
|
They constitute a fine list of problematic behaviors. I wouldn't change them. I'd replace the word "sins" with "problematic behaviors."
|
well, Sins are inherently tied to religion.
I agree for people that don't follow religion, these things should still be guidelines, as in, "problematic behaviour" to steer clear of. I wouldn't take out any really. perhaps adjust pride's definition for non-religious folk. It's interesting that all sins really apply to human interaction, never to a person himself. It's all about keeping a good name for yourself in the here and now. (who would wanna be friends with an overtly proud glutonnous bastard?) Most of what I read so far, is either a. a rewording (religious intolerance -> pride to the point where you have the right religion, the others are wrong and will suffer for it -> wrath) b. lack of experience (driving) c. actions instead of behaviour (lying) actions, that's what the commandments are for... If I had to add one though, I'd go for unreliability, which I guess leans pretty close to irresponsability. Edit: Disrespect or lack of respect could be added, but it's so broad as to encompass other sins. |
i would retire gluttony, because "dammit, i loves me them chicken wings"....
i would replace it with intolerance, there is no excuse for closing your mind off. you could say i am intolerant of intolerance, but since i am the hypothetical god, anyone who says so will have a plauge of boils...on his/her ass...that seep...and smell like cheese... |
So you're retire "Gluttony" because you're guilty of it, and substitute Intolerance because you're intolerant??
|
envy should go. there is no way to avoid envy.
|
I like intolerance. I agree that one would fit well.
buffto- You might not be able to avoid envy entirely, but it's not a problem until it affects your life too much. |
Lol you're gonna love this - Pride...
Because I'm convinced that I AM god, or at least just as capable as "god" is. The fact that I haven't realized this potential is simply me choosing not too. I'd add "Ignorance" - seeing the truth, but choosing not to accept it. |
yep denim, that sounds about right... ;oP
