The meaning of a black rose?

I just recieved a histerical phone call from my mother. She just "broke up" with a guy who she was going to dinner with (although she told him she wasn't interested in him as a lover). Apparently, other older guys were coming up and talking to her... why my mom is still going to these places and attracting men baffles me. Anyway, apparently this guy took it the wrong way when she was talking to these other guys and totally flipped out. He drove her home, and left. They were scheduled to go out the next evening but they just didn't call eachother.

Fast foward to today. Apparently he comes over and leaves a letter containing a poem (said something along the lines of; you broke my heart) and a single black rose at the guard desk to my mothers condominium.

My mom thinks the guy is apeshit and she's going to get murdered.

Anyway, what is the meaning of the black rose? Apparently he's from Guatemala, if it has something to do with Guatemalen culture. I Googled it realy quick and couldn't really find anything. Some websites said that it signified death, other said "loss of love."

Should I be worried about this? Do I really have to make a phonecall to this guy to scare him shitless?

Haven't heard of black roses being sent to someone since high school or college - basically they'd be sent to the person who broke your heart. Some might consider it a death threat, but eh -- I wouldn't worry so much.

according to this, one of many poorly made sites regarding the meaning of roses: http://www.angelfire.com/journal2/flowers/roses4.html

Quote:

Black roses signify death hatred and farewell. Used at funerals.
A single black rose was used by a close friend and or loved one leaving for a war or on a journey he did not expect to return from.
personally, i think it just means this schmuck has impeccably bad taste.

Esco 06-05-2004 09:24 PM

Regardless if it was in poor taste and just tacky, I'd definitely report it anyway. I'm not sure how well your mother knows him, but it's always best to be safe.

Phaenx 06-05-2004 09:50 PM

It means he's a goth. Buy some repellant.

But yeah, I think it's death. I know this, ironically, because I asked a goth kid at school one day, "Hey... What's with the rose?"

Random wierd kids I meet in my day to day life attribute 95% of my knowledge.

It really depends on the guy and what he is capable of. With Italians (and certain Italian Americans) it is very clearly understood as a death threat.

As I understand it though, it is a threat and not a promise. For example, someone I knew owned a resturant and they were told (READ: pressured) that they would have to sell to a paticular person who wanted to buy it even though it was not for sale. As it turns out, the people I knew were "connected" and let their friends know about the "offer" they recieved.

The fellow was delievered a note and a bouquet of black roses. He appologised and moved out of the state shortly after. The black roses did not mean death, as long as he complied.

The moral of this story is that your mom will be fine if:

1. She goes back out with the guy and marries him or at least dates him until he is uninterested
2. Has tougher friends (he delivers 1 black rose and her connections deliver 12 and and a "note")
3. The guy does not know what it really means and is just some freak.

Seriously though - check this guy out and offer to rearrange his face at the first sign of trouble. Be reasonable, but prepared.

make sure you have his information. if something does happen, he won't get away with it.

try not to alarm your mom too much about it.

Kaos 06-06-2004 06:33 AM

I've always heard the black rose signifies death. But like tarot cards, it can mean the end of something, not that the person is going to be killed.

I don't know how well your mother knows this person, but I wouldn't look too much into it, but she should just keep an eye open just in case.

H12 06-06-2004 10:22 AM

I've always understood it to be the symbol of death and pain. Personally, just for my mom's sake, I'd look deeper into it just in case.

SixEdxMia 06-06-2004 10:43 AM

We are not talking about the mafia here,We are talking about an old lonely man who thought that your mama was the cat's meow.

It's endearing,It is a rose afterall, and She obviously.. broke his heart.Black flowers are also a sign of mourning, and He lost her.I think it is sweet.

Averett 06-06-2004 10:45 AM

FYI... Black roses don't occur in nature. It's just a really really dark red rose.

Sounds like this guy is a little dramatic..

sexymama 06-06-2004 08:33 PM

And all this time I have loved black roses -- but that was because my grandfather grew them in his garden. (And they were a deep purple actually.)

I just don't believe that this world is very safe. I would look into it -- but not jeopordize myself by making any threats back.

Out of curiosity, would you let us know what happens?

Fire 06-06-2004 08:46 PM

better safe than sorry- take it from someone who's wife lost a family member to a crazy, obsessed guy......

because you, my friend, have a M.I.L.F. heheheh.

on a serious note, the dude sounds like he's got a few screws loose, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to file a police report. might sound a little extreme, but it's better to let the cops know than not to. that is, of course, unless you're the kind of guy who takes the law into his own hands ;)

la petite moi 06-08-2004 12:06 PM

I doubt it means a death threat. Black is a colour of mourning, and he probably is showing that he is mourning over the loss of her.

Arroe 06-08-2004 12:27 PM

yeah, i think it's just a sad old man.

The way you people jump to conclusions and suggest violence as a cure really bothers me. File a police report??? rearrange his face?? for what? Sending a flower and note?

He's just saying she broke his heart. Even I know that one. Yikes!! I don't even want to meet any of you that are suggesting a police report (or worse).

Dude, this thread is 8 months old....Let it go.

ironmaiden7o7 02-03-2005 03:32 AM

I doubt it's a death threat, maybe he was just going with the way he felt while getting the rose. But then again, you just never know people. Tell your mom to be wary of him.

Hehehe.. Some people just don't pay attention to details.

Shizukana 02-03-2005 09:52 AM

Yeah, I know the thread is old, but I guess I'll comment anyway...

Black roses typically signify guilt or some sort of offense against one's honor. Mums (Chrysanthemums) are more signifying of death, really - they are typically "funeral" flowers.

tiltedbc 02-03-2005 04:18 PM

I know it's an old thread... but it's still going right? Maybe they should just delete anything over a week old I guess.

I'm curious whatever happened with this guy. Did he ever attack your Mom? It terrifies me to think that there may be other men out there sending flowers to women.

little_tippler 02-04-2005 06:45 AM

? thread dead.

jstory 02-05-2005 07:17 PM

Thats sick, almost stalkerish.

Old or not, at least she didn't get:

Strange Famous 02-07-2005 01:34 PM

I dont really know, but Angel sent a bunch of dead black roses to Buffy and I think it was intended in a funeral/"flowers for the dead" type sense.

I think in your mothers case the guy is just being very over dramatic though.

MSD 02-07-2005 09:03 PM

This thread is old. The original poster made a post, lurked ffor 4 months, and hasn't logged on to the site since October 22 last year. The thread can die now.
