The state's top civil rights official has ruled that taverns cannot offer discounts to women on "ladies nights," agreeing with a man who claimed such gender-based promotions discriminated against men.

David R. Gillespie said it was not fair for women to get into the Coastline nightclub (search) for free and receive discounted drinks while men paid a $5 cover charge and full price for drinks.

In his ruling Tuesday, J. Frank Vespa-Papaleo, director of the state Division on Civil Rights, rejected arguments by the nightclub that ladies nights were a legitimate promotion. Commercial interests do not override the "important social policy objective of eradicating discrimination (search)," he ruled.

The ruling specifically addressed the weekly ladies nights (search) at the Coastline in Cherry Hill, but it carries the force of a court decision and applies statewide. Vespa-Papaleo said state officials would write formal rules after a public hearing.

The restaurant's attorney, Colleen Ready, did not immediately return a telephone message left Wednesday by The Associated Press.

Courts in other states have issued divergent opinions on such promotions.

Judges in Pennsylvania and Iowa have said similar events are illegal, but courts in Illinois and Washington state have said that ladies nights are permissible because they do not discriminate against men but rather encourage women to attend.
Now I have often wished they had a men's night but damn who was the moron that took this to the courts?

phredgreen 06-02-2004 02:09 PM

this means that someone, somewhere took the bar to court over this, and if his name is ever released, he'll catch more shit than the kid who caught the ball in the redsox game

Cynthetiq 06-02-2004 02:10 PM

now if they could just get the haircuts, and dry cleaning differences sorted out...

Rekna 06-02-2004 02:11 PM

there is a reason that more men go to ladies night then women and it isn't to protest it.

primal 06-02-2004 02:13 PM

Well if they are heading this way with the law. Maybe you can sue lesbians who won't sleep with men because that's gender based discrimination. Maybe we should sue women only gyms, while we're at it.

Rekna 06-02-2004 02:20 PM

or maybe sue so that mens bathrooms also have tampon dispensers!

FaderMonkey 06-02-2004 02:41 PM

Or while we're at it why don't we sue for a mens right to use a womens restroom.

Lines too long you don't want to do that - -the wimmins want to use the men's room -shorter line...

Some people truly have too much time on their hands...

ARTelevision 06-02-2004 03:21 PM

Good thread title.
That's what I think.

World's King 06-02-2004 03:23 PM

Funny shit, funny shit indeed.

I have come to the conclusion that this man is either homosexual (no offense intended) or had a plan to get a Men's Night backfire hard. Either way, David R. Gillespie will be despised for years to come.

kutulu 06-02-2004 04:20 PM

I think it's pretty cool. Not everyone goes to the bar to hook up and the girls that party will go drinking either way. Why the fuck should I pay twice as much as some girl pays? Fuck that.

That is the law in California, at least. The same price for the same service.

water_boy1999 06-02-2004 06:44 PM

While we are on the subject..... men should be allowed in women's locker rooms to interview them after a professional sports game! I'm suing.

MSD 06-02-2004 10:00 PM

Hmph, a silly state law restricting business-stimulating policies of private businesses. I think we know who gets screwed over in this one.

Rekna 06-03-2004 08:13 AM

So now the question is will a girl sue to be allowed to be a catholic preist.....

ower 06-03-2004 09:07 AM

I am sure they've already tried Rekna

Blackthorn 06-03-2004 06:51 PM

That is ABSURD! I want my women to be DRUNK DRUNK DRUNK!!!

How else is a guy who is as pretty as Shrek like me gonna get in their panties? :D

Chiuey 06-04-2004 08:40 AM

This guy who tooks the bars court should be shot and he should start frequenting gay bars seeing as he likes the idea of a sausage fest so damn much! What a fucking moron! How else are bars suppose to attract more chick? damn it, now I need a drink! :hmm:

pocon1 06-04-2004 08:45 AM

Next, let's go after senior prices. old people take up just as much room in a movie theater. Keep the matinee prices, because that benefits everyone and encourages the old retirees to go during the day.

yournamehere 06-04-2004 10:20 AM

This is the epitome of biting off your nose to spite your face.

Principles, schminciples - the ladies need their beer goggles even more than we men.

Why wasn't this guy smart enough to have a lady go to the bar to order his drink, like the rest of us do?

kutulu 06-04-2004 10:55 AM

It's not like girls are just going to stop going to bars if there is no ladies night. It will just be split up more evenly.

It's about time men fought back on this type of shit. If they want to fight the men's only clubs then we'll take away their women's only fitness centers and shit like that. You can't have it both ways.

denim 06-04-2004 11:11 AM

I don't see how this is legal. I suspect if the bar contests this by appeal, it'll be overturned.

kutulu 06-04-2004 11:19 AM

Look at it this way, would anyone be able to get away with having white night where white people get free admission and low prices but all minorities have to pay admission and pay full price? If the answer is no, then how can a place justify giving discounts to a select group?

denim 06-04-2004 12:21 PM

Yeah, I got that. It's just that this is a matter of a real difference in priorities between the sexes: we wanna get laid, they don't wanna lay us unless they're plastered because they're sane....

I always figured the idea behind "Ladies Night" was to assist the ladies in getting plastered. Not so?

Not exactly.

Like everything else, the bottom line is money. The idea behind Ladies Night is that more ladies in your bar = a lot more men in your bar spending money = more $$$ in your pocket.

Delvid 06-04-2004 12:55 PM

Now the guys will have to pay more. Full price on theirs and now full price on the ladies. Way to go dude. Have not been to ladies night in over a decade.

Reese 06-04-2004 01:57 PM

I'm tired of these fucking kids and senior citizans getting discounts too! bastards! We have a silly government sometimes...

riptide4070 06-07-2004 11:58 AM

another incident where discrimination lawsuits have gone too far...this guy should spend more time worrying about bigger issues if he wants to make any changes
