Coke...

First you specify that you want a "coke" and then the question is asked "what kind?" and you reply with the specifics.

Down south it's all about brand names.

Tonic is club soda with some extra chemicals added.

Here in MD (right by DC) we use soda and coke pretty interchangably, although we also go by brand name since UMD is a Pepsi campus.

I prefer Coke, because when I want a cola I want a bloody Coke.

Soda is the way it should be... also, here in Wisconsin, we say "Water Fountain" whereas other, less cultured , regions say bubbler, referring to the thing that spouts water out so you can drink it...

what a great thread. when i used to live in new york we would have this discussion all the time. i grew up calling it pop. when i first moved to ny and ordered a pop, people would look at me like i was speaking a different language. strange.

in ny i worked with a guy from pennsylvania who told me that half the state calls it pop and the other half soda. he went on to tell me that there was some sort of charity sporting event ( i think basketball) that had the sodas vs the pops. anyone ever heard of this?

Some of you people need to relax and calm down. This isn't a life or death thing, now.

Whatever happened to "soda pop?" Or how about "soft drink?"

It is simple- when asked what I want to drink, I ask if the restaurant peddles coke products, or pepsi products. If they answer coke, I tell them I want a diet coke. If they answer pepsi, I ask for the crab juice.

If I am running into the gas station, I will usually ask the person with me if they want a pop.

If I am referring to the drink in a passive voice, I use soda.

Sometimes, I use soda pop.

I live in Dallas and I call it coke. Usually though, we just use the real name of the drink, but when referring to carbonated beverages as a collective, we use coke. I hate Coca-Cola too.

My relatives from Wisconsin either call it soda, pop or soda-pop. All of those drive me insane, especially soda-pop.

The real question is: how many of you drink the best drink ever, Dr Pepper. It seems to be a South thing as well and the restaruants that serve it grow scarce as you travel northward - try it out sometime. My mom even used to hate it when she lived in Indiana, but after moving to Dallas, she began to love it for some reason. Hmmmm...

When I am at school, everyone I know calls it a bubbler, confused the crap out of me for quite a while. Never call it a water fountain. That is what you find on a golf course. I always have and always will call it a drinking fountain.

It's called "pop" in Canada and "soda" would be soda water like when you ask for a vodka soda or vodka tonic.

It will always be POP for me.

I'm from Wisconsin. I used to call it pop all the time. When I waitressed at a truck stop I got so many comments about my term for it that I eventually changed what I called it. It stuck somewhat. I find myself morphing back into my old habit of calling it pop. I actually like the word pop - just has a ring to it. Maybe I like it because it's what I used to call it as a kid. Like that sound when you pulled the metal cap off "POP!"

I use to call it Soda when I grew up overseas, then when I went to college in IN, it was called pop, and then I moved to NC, and they call it Coke, but I still call it pop.

From NJ here and we call it soda. Calling it coke is just confusing in most cases, but i use it sometimes too. When i refer to a coke im refering to either coca-cola or pepsi though. I find it annoying when i order a "coke" and get back "what kind". It pissed me off, though, when i ask for a "coke" and they say "we dont have coke". I always end up asking "ok, what else do you have", the reply always being something like "well, we have pepsi, diet pepsi, etc etc". To me pepsi and coke are the same damn thing - cola. People look at you even more strangely if you order a cola though.
The coke-pepsi things gets really old really fast. The taste isnt really noticable at all if you dont pay attention to it. Not anything like the difference between regular and diet. Diet cola tastes like rancid ass to me.

I'm with cowudders, but for different reasons. I usually go with coke, or maybe the specific brand name - but the very sound of "pop" or "soda" makes bile rise in my throat. Akin to seeing old men from Ohio and PA, in pleather sandals with black socks pulled up to their mid-thighs with khacky shorts, running around the beach with metal detectors. icky.

no one ever calls it pop, ever.
