honey, I blew it again.

I noticed the aphids were getting thick on my wife's roses. Knowing that those roses bring her great joy, I went on the attack. I hosed those plants down with Bug-Killer. I soaked them good from one side, then went around to the other side, just to make sure nothing would survive the assault. That's when I noticed the little ladybug nest. Prior to my arrival, my wife an son lovingly placed a bunch of ladybugs down in the lower branches of one of the rosebushes.

Shortly thereafter, the ground was littered with little black circles - the undersides of dead ladybugs.

Nothing to see here, kids. Move along.

Cynthetiq 05-28-2004 08:44 AM

oh shit!

Bill O'Rights 05-28-2004 08:46 AM

Oh man...you seem to live my life. That is most definately something I would pull. We need to have a beer someday.

moonstrucksoul 05-28-2004 08:50 AM

collateral damage.

Polyphobic 05-28-2004 09:03 AM

Time to visit homedepot and buy some more before they notice. Or just claim ignorance.

cchris 05-28-2004 09:06 AM

A day out in the park with your boy followed by a cooked dinner for the Lady.

Ha ha.

Man,done that shit plenty of times.

water_boy1999 05-28-2004 09:08 AM

You won the battle, but not the war.....

00111000 05-28-2004 09:16 AM

Maybe you can tell her that ladybugs make good compost....or something. I'm pretty sure you're screwed though :(

Rubyee 05-28-2004 09:22 AM

The ladybugs would have eaten the aphids eventually, so that really sucks.

You could dry them out and put them into a potpourri.

lmfao

Tell them you launched a pre-emptive strike on the aphids and that control of the roses will be returned to the ladybirds as soon as you feel they are ready.

More seriously, though, I believe you can buy ladybirds these days as an environmentally friendly alternative to pesticides. If they haven't noticed yet, go and buy some more and place them out where you haven't sprayed and tell the kids the ladybirds have moved house. Then when they're older, you can explain to them what really happened (Just like when I found out that my cat hadn't really gone to live with the fairies at the seaside)

"so i'm walking by your roses, honey.. then outta nowhere like 30 ladybugs attack my face. i roll around for a while until i finally reach the bug spray.. i'm sorry but it was either me or them"

at least if you say this you'll get a good laugh, then you can explain the accidental nature

viejo gringo 05-28-2004 07:30 PM

Friendly Fire I guess... Tell them that the aphids killed them!!

WMD no doubt.

KellyC 05-30-2004 10:02 PM

"But...but...I only did it because I love you."

She can't get mad at you if you use this line..:D

BoomTruck 05-31-2004 04:13 PM

Say you confused them with those ladybug lookalikes that bite the hell out of you.

waltert 05-31-2004 08:30 PM

it was the CIA, they were sending messages to al-quaeda

H12 06-02-2004 04:12 PM

When ladybugs get to make a nest in your wife's roses, the terrorists have won.

Consider yourself a savior.

fypon 06-02-2004 08:47 PM

Damn that funny. I can't believe I haven’t done that one yet. My advice for you, feign ignorance…. Maybe those dumb ladybugs ate the roses which made them sick and they died….. No need to bring the horrors of war into the picture un-necessarily. As said above “collateral damage” If she does question you on it by all means come clean.

BigGov 06-02-2004 09:39 PM

Once again clavus demonstrates why he deserves the title Best-Storyteller-Of-The-TFP.

Fremen 06-13-2004 12:56 AM

clavus 06-13-2004 06:39 PM

Frickin great reviews. I must buy some more!

GakFace 06-14-2004 03:11 AM

more? how'd you get rid of the first 9000? Then again it takes an lot to make fill a Lady's pool, and that kinda Bugs me.

Munku 06-14-2004 01:39 PM

http://www.planetnatural.com/beneficialinsects1.html ladybugs for sale.

gar1976 06-14-2004 03:08 PM

You shouldn't need to spray for aphids at all. We use Bayer 2-in-1 for roses, once a month. Fertilizes and kills aphids for you.
