I saw a dying man yesterday
Yesterday, as I was leaving work, I came across a car accident that must've happened just minutes earlier. Only a single traffic cop and a few passersby were helping the injured. For some reason, the image of this guy really bothered me. A middle class man, not unlike myself, laying in the middle of an otherwise busy intersection stairing up at the sun above while blood trickled down his forehead and dripped from his ears on the pavement below. How horrible and frightening that must've been. Friday afternoon, just getting out of work, looking forward to a nice weekend to do stuff with the wife and kids, and CRASH! BAM! Ugh, I just hope it wasn't someone I work with... and I really hope they survived. I don't even know where the driver of the other car was.
Maybe the thing that bothered me most is thinking "that could've been me if I would've left a minute earlier." For a good hour after I felt like I was gonna puke. I can't imagine how you EMT guys deal with that every day. I guess all I can say is that I hope nothing like happens to me or anyone I know.... that includes my TFP family too... be careful out there guys. |
It's always unsettling to be reminded of your mortality...but the true lesson is the love of life, not the fear of death.

I feel ya. A few weeks ago, I saw the aftermath of a semi falling over in the other lane and smashing into a red truck. With this being a mile from my house and with me always having a fear for semis, that really scared me 'cuz that easily could have been me. I saw no bodies, but I feel like that it would have been better off for everyone involved if they were visible. You could tell everything had just happened, because the police weren't there and I didn't see them coming until I went another four or five miles (and the station is about seven or eight miles away from the site). I prayed they were all alright, and that I hope to never be in an accident like that, especially with a semi.
Later that day, I found out the man in the red truck died. They recently put up a cross in the grass beside the scene of the accident (where there's still a big burnt spot on the road). Just the scene of it has scared me so much, yet really has helped me apprieciate life more and not letting me take much of anything for granted. I hope that never happens to any of you as much as I hope that never happens to me. |
I wear a bracelet on my wrist to remind me of my good friend who died on his motorcycle on the way to work last year. He left behind a wife and two beautiful kids.
The last time I saw him he and I got into a small arguement about something petty. Never realizing that it would be the last time I see him... |
Was this from a motorcycle accident? Godspeed...
