What's the problem? Told them not to loot, they don't listen, fuck your car.
Good deal, soldier on heroes.

well looting isnt acceptable... and has to be stopped somehow...
was this the right way... i dont think so... seemed to me like the soldiers werent directed on how to handle a situation like that... isnt their an iraqi police force now... the soldiers shoulda arrested them for looting and turned them over to the police...

Still. They inforced punishment for a crime done. How the hell would the owner of the wood feel? He would probaly not shrug it off as just wood. Did they handle the situation as well as they could have? no but they still did the right thing and punished a bunch of looters for commiting a crime. If he was really a taxi driver is it a smart move to use your only means of income to commit crime?

This was already on TFP a month or so ago.
I think we came to the conclusion that this might not be real. EDIT whoa, wait a minute. Sorry, this is from a PBS show right? I wonder if a lot of stuff like this is happening over there. I'd say odds are pretty good that if this sort of thing occurs in front of a tv crew, that even worse stuff happens when the camera is off.

SoK... just remember, greater good and all that, if stoping these guys from looting will bring down the gas prices, well then so be it! /Sarcasm... /goes to find videos of Sadam's mass graves to post all over the internet so we can remember why we are there... This post really annoyed me for some reason, maybe it was the way the poster said: "your lovely American soldiers" some of these "Soldiers" are my friends and family, they are put in unbelieveable situtations everyday for what? The thanks of a greatful nation? No! To try to better the lives of some people thousands of miles away. This is one video of some americans being dumasses; agreed. But when do we get to start to hear about the good things we are doing over there, like opening the first free press in Iraq in 60 years, or even bringing basic food and water and sanitation to the masses who never had even seen a working toilet before. The way this was posted is inviting a Flame war, "your lovely American soldiers" is right, Sarcasm aside, I'd really like to see one post on the TFP about something good that Americans are doing for Iraq, it wouldn't happen, no one would would care... If someone from america isn't holding a Iraqi with a dog leash, or shocking the shit out of them while they are naked, then it's not news. //End of rant.

Disgusting, yet hilarious. I'm sure that if the tape is genuine, the troops have been punished. The PBO carries a large sum of money to deal with issues like this...

Let's see, if I get caught looting, and am given the choice between losing my car to a tank or going to jail where I could be raped in the ass and photographed in shameful poses by American soldiers... well, I can always loot to get some scratch together for a new car.

This is an old one. They were looting. The U.S. Army is judge and jury. I'm sure the hooches the troops build for themselves is all from properly requisitioned supplies.
Where is the Iraqi law enforcement? Less than a month until the "Transfer of Power." Shouldn't Iraqi's be taking care of law enforcement in Iraq? Are there any laws in Iraq currently?

well in the states wouldn't your car get impounded if you were to use it to say rob a bank? I know planks of wood are not the same thing, but lets keep in mind that we do not know what they did or said to the soldiers that made them react like that either. It did seem a little over board.

This makes me sick...Regardless of if he was or wasn't a taxi driver, this could have a huge consequenses on him, and his family... Who gave the command to do it? Did they do it because they thought it was fun. Did they think for one minute about the person.

No offense to the United States Military, but this is a gentle reminder that we're sending a bunch of kids over there.
Kids that don't want to be there, are dying over there.

hmm... i'm pretty sure i'd rather not ride in a taxi driven by a guy who risks his life investment to steal wood... doesn't seem like the best judgement. he broke a law he surely was aware of, someone who takes advantage of his fellow citizens by stealing their things in a moment of crisis will receive very little sympathy from me.
the craziest thing to me was... why in the world did they bother to shoot it with their pistols when they were planning on crushing it w/a freaking tank?

lets remember here also that you are seeing a few seconds of video and a few quotes carefully selected to backup the "reporter's" agenda. We don't ahve any background on the incedent. Those guys could have been caught 5 or 6 times already and let off with a warning.

The car crushing was pretty cool, but I'm going to need more info before I can have a solid opinion on this. The obvious bias of the video makes it hard to accept.
Where was their commander? Who gave the order to crush the vehicle? What caused them to learn the wood was being scrapped in the first place? What orders were the soldiers originally under? Until we know more about the command structure and where the soldiers were coming from, I don't feel there's enough of an informational foundation to stand an opinion on.

This is further evidence that our soldiers are culturally insensitive. If they had consulted with the fine folks in Mecca first, they would have known that the punishment for stealing is the amputation of the thieves' hands. To crush a criminal's car, while leaving his hands attached to his body is deeply humiliating. I'm sure that after we hand over power, looters will fare much better under the righteous legal system that is prominant in the Middle East.
