They would not identify the man, other than to say he is a U.S. citizen born in America. The Associated Press, quoting an anonymous law enforcement official, said he is a lawyer named Brandon Mayfield. His wife, who was not arrested, also is a U.S. citizen but was born in Egypt.

Authorities said that the arrest on a material witness warrant was based on investigative leads flowing from the simultaneous bombings of several trains in Madrid March 11, which took 191 lives. Several Islamic militants, many of Moroccan origin, have been arrested and 12 suspects remain in custody in Spain on suspicion of involvement in the bombings.

U.S. authorities said that FBI agents were conducting a low-key search of the house.

"There is a tie to Madrid and there's a lot of smoke but nobody can figure out what's burning," said an official who asked to not be further identified. "There's something there, but what exactly it is I don't think anybody knows at the moment."

This same official praised the investigative work in the Madrid bombing case. "They did a hell of a good job, the guys who came up with the information" that led to the Portland home, the official said.

Not much to say about it. Our law enforcement people are doing a good job and got a suspect in a terrorist bombing investigation. Let's hope they get enough that another attack isn't able to be carried out successfully.

Or is it ironic he's from Oregon? That's an odd little state. Or maybe that's just been my experience.

ALOHA, Ore. - FBI agents arrested a Portland lawyer Thursday as part of the investigation into the deadly train bombings in Spain, federal officials said.

Brandon Mayfield, a U.S. citizen, was taken into custody on a material witness warrant, said a senior law enforcement official in Washington D.C., speaking on condition of anonymity. The arrest is the first known in the United States with connections to the March 11 bombings in Madrid.

The FBI also searched the home of the 1989 convert to Islam, the official said.

Mayfield's fingerprints were found on materials related to the Madrid bombings, said a second senior law enforcement official, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

Mayfield represented one of those people, Jeffrey Leon Battle, in a custody case involving Battle's son. Law enforcement officials did not know of any contacts between Mayfield and the other Portland terrorism defendants.

Hehe, we Oregonians thank you. I once heard a black guy say "Oregon is the whitest place in America."

It IS pretty weird.

That's really weird though...my town is next to Aloha, and i have cousins who live there...such a white trash town, the last place you'd expect any sentiment like that.
