best smelling men's fragrance

I want to get some cologne for the prom, but I don't know what to get. I don't wear scents because my Mom is allergic to scents. I do know I like aqua di gio, but I want something unique.

SiN 05-05-2004 05:32 AM

There's a good thread in the LL about that, so if you're not afraid to go in there and read, not post! I recommend it.
Tis on the first page. I'll refrain from linking it bcause some may miss my warning ;)

cameroncrazy822 05-05-2004 05:33 AM

If you're Mom is allergic to "scents" then cologne is out for you if you're planning to take her to the prom. If you will be taking someone else then try light scented colognes such as any in the Calvin Klein line. If your mom is allergic to the point where she will have a severe reaction to you and you are adverse to precluding her from seeing you off by wearing any cologne at all, try some strong smelling soap if she can tolerate that better. The whole scent thing is difficult though because cologne is by definition a scent. I hope it works out for you, the prom and that time in your life is precious and should be enjoyed to the fullest.

noahfor 05-05-2004 06:33 AM

Yea, I don't normally wear cologne because it aggravates her asthma, but I figure I can wear it once.

mikec 05-05-2004 07:03 AM

tommy is a good one. nice clean smell, not overpowering, not really perfumey....and chicks dig it hehehehhe

afraidofninjas 05-05-2004 07:15 AM

i'm a big fan of Swiss Army. Nothing says beautiful man-roma like the smell of a neutral european military. Ironically it is not "overpowering" either. that's one man's opinion.

quadro2000 05-05-2004 07:37 AM

Drakkar Noir has always been my favorite. Then again, I've worn it for like 10 years so maybe it's time for something new. :)

Redlemon 05-05-2004 08:10 AM

I'd say skip it. Don't aggravate your mom, when you know and she knows that this would cause her a problem.

And really, a "new smell" probably isn't going to increase your odds of "getting some" from your date, especially if it turns out she doesn't like the smell.

Of course, I don't like scents, and neither does my wife, so I'm biased.

Charlatan 05-05-2004 08:16 AM

Are you taking your Mom to the prom? If not, don't worry about what you smell like for her sake.

I've always been a fan of CK One. It is a light sent. Don't bathe in the stuff. Just a little spritz on your chest. If you put it on your neck and face the smell can be maddening...

The rule is you shouldn't smell cologne until you are close enough to kiss.

Just stay away from Aqua Velva and Stetson... nasty stuff but they make a nice cocktail though...

Memnoch 05-05-2004 08:22 AM

I've heard that new Axe spray is supposed to be really good. I, myself, use only the best - Old Spice Original. It reeks of MAN.

agball 05-05-2004 08:26 AM

Chanel - Egoiste Platinum

water_boy1999 05-05-2004 09:03 AM

Jean Paul Gotier
Farenheit
Obsession
Chrome
Polo Sport

There are a few more on my fav list but I am drawing a blank. I can describe the bottles if you want me to.

noahfor 05-05-2004 09:14 AM

I am not taking my mom to the prom. I probably won't see her for more than a minute, and maybe not at all. It's not even my prom. I've never worn a suit before, or a tie, and I just thought some cologne would go with it. I'm anal retentive, all the peices have to be in place.

05-05-2004 09:44 AM

This is in the ladies' lounge- you can take a peek to see what the women like:
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=52101

I personally like Obsession and Adidas. I don't like it too strong, though. You don't want to overwhelm them.

I was just teasing you...

Go to the cologne counter at the department store... smell a few samples and pick one that you like.

Again, don't go overboard. Moderation is the key. Use the kissing rule.

monkeysugar 05-05-2004 11:13 AM

If you're not going to use it much, you might try a small sampler bottle. I prefer the splash kind to the spray, and it's much easier to control how much you're putting on anyway. I usually put a small drop on my fingertip, then apply it to the pulse points on my neck and wrists. Here's some of the things I've worn that have gotten lots of compliments from the ladies:

1. Aqua di Gio
2. Hugo Boss
3. Canoe
4. Catalyst

The scent that smells the best on you is going to rely a bit on your body chemistry, so trying a few different things at the cologne counter is a very good idea.

nine 05-05-2004 11:34 AM

Hugo Boss is my chosen smell. Have used it for the past 15 years and probably always will

bookerV 05-05-2004 11:53 AM

Chrome is great stuff. I had an ex help me pick it out and since I've gone with it every girl i've made out with (and some that i didnt) has said i smell great.

World's King 05-05-2004 12:14 PM

1. Two-Stroke Oil
2. Race Fuel

flamingdog 05-05-2004 12:14 PM

My favourite is 1881 by Cerruti. Wear it all the time, never get any. So go figure.

I switched to Hugo about 10 months ago from 7 years of Liz Claborne's Curve and have gotten more comments in the last 10 months than I did in the previous 7 years. I'm sticking with Hugo. It's good stuff. Not to strong either, I don't get many comments until I am in close quarters with ladies, which is where it really counts. You don't want everyone's eyes to start watering when you walk in the room. Those people either have an olfactory defeciency or are way to conceited about their scent :)

Esoteric 05-05-2004 01:18 PM

Very Sexy for Him by Victoria's Secret is good. I wear that. :)

mrlindeman 05-05-2004 01:28 PM

mmmm

My favorite is Joven White Musk. mm mmm mmm. Its very subtle but very nice. Im all out though:( .

I found something on ebay that is 22 sample vials for like $11, so I'll probably just get that.

Summer:

Aqua Di Gio
L'eau d'Issey

I bought some Cool Water recently. It was described in the Ladie's Lounge as "panty dropping good".

So far, no dropped panties. Smells pretty damn good though.

crony 05-05-2004 03:43 PM

I've always been a fan of Fierce by Abercrombie and Fitch. That, or Wood also by A&F. The only thing worth paying for in that store in my opinion :D

-Ever- 05-05-2004 04:39 PM

Aqua Di Gio is going to be recognized by many girls as "oh, you smell like my last boyfriend" (no offense anyone...)

Just go to Nordstrom's or Macys and smell around. Scents and all are really evolutionary. Chose what you like and find a girl that likes what you like; I've seen this in action and this is when you get crazy reactions. It's amazing what scents can do.
I'm just a strong believer in getting what you like. I once got something that I just 'sort-of' liked. After a while, it would make me nautious to smell.

My personal favorite is Curve. I also sport Zara, but you can only get it in Europe (sukkas!) I recently smelled one by Armani that I liked. I think it was called Mania.

To be honest though, I'm also a strong believer in 'intimate' relationships with my lovers. My girlfriend honestly gets more excited when she smells my natural armpit or skin's odor than when she smells my cologne (which she's also nuts for), which I feel is a side-effect of the type of relationship were in. Again, it's just an evolutionary chemical thing I guess. Glad I found my place.... ;)

Best of luck!
-T

Edit: just checked out the post in ladies lounge and realized that Curve is still going strong! I know it's popular, but I'm yet to meet anyone that can easily recognize it. Interesting.

I used to wear Romance by Ralph Lauren.

I now wear Aqua Di Gio. I prefer it. And my girlfriend loves it.

matteo101 05-05-2004 07:08 PM

I know alot of girls who like Crave by CK. I think it smells pretty good, but no everyone has it, and you end up smelling like everyone else. Dark blue by hugo is what i use alot and also Freedom by Tommy Hilfiger.

Why? I don't see why tiny little samples would cost any more than that, and I'm only wearing it once, so I don't need any more than that. You think it's not good, fake or something. I'm not trying to get laid by the way. I've been going out with my girlfriend for a year, and even if we hadn't had sex yet, we are getting some E I think, so that pretty much outshines anything cologne is going to do for me.

Those are some of my favs as well. Especially the Azaro Chrome. I never fail to get compliments from the ladies on how good I smell when I wear that stuff.

Dunhill Desire is also good, and most of the time prefer that over anything else.

james t kirk 05-05-2004 11:48 PM

I am a BIG fan of Dove Soap.

Yep, just plain soap and water.

I hate all colognes.

Doing E at prom. congradulations on a new low.

Strange Famous 05-08-2004 12:38 PM

I dont know if they still make it or not, but I used to wear an aftershave calle "fusion" and that was pretty nice.

noahfor 05-08-2004 12:41 PM

Well, actually we were going to it afterwards. Why do you say it's a new low. Have you done it? I can't see how it is any more low than drinking alcohol, and I think we all know that will be done on prom. Alcohol is the most neurotoxic drug, it's effects are much more extreme than those of ecstasy, and without checking the facts I gurantee it has contributed to at least 100 times more deaths than that of ecstasy. Ectasy hightens awareness, empathy, intelligence, creativity, emotion, communication, all things I would want to be hightened on a night that has potential to be special. I don't even have to say what alcohol does. Ectasy on prom night I think will be a new high. There is no such thing as fake experience. Experience is experience whether it is drug induced or not. I'm interested in hearing why you think it is low.

E works in the same way, on the same part of the brain, as prozac... or so I always understood anyway.

I'm not an expert, but I do know a little. Prozac is an ssri, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. There are little molecules in the synapse, the space between neurons, that grab hold of serotonin, a molecule that is used by neurons to pass signals, and these molecules take the serotonin back to the neuron that released them after they have been received, i think, by the other neuron. Sometimes these molecules grab the serotonin before it has time to reach the other neuron, and if not enough is getting to the other neuron it can lead to mood problems. Drugs like prozac stop these molecules from getting the serotonin and taking it back, they inhibit reuptake. I don't think anyone knows how E works, but one idea is that it reverses the reuptake process, so that the molecules that take the serotonin back to the neuron that released it, instead dump it at the recieving neuron, resulting in extremely intense signals being passed constantly throughout the serotonin system. Basic it supercharges your brain, and then leaves it dead afterwards.
