Stupid Administrative Assistant's Day

Just wanted to rant about how mad this day makes me.

Today, four potted plants with $25 gift certificates in them for a local restaurant arrived in commeration of this stupid holiday. One for the receptionist, one for the sales assistant, one for the owner's personal assistant, and one for the operations assistant. Only one person was left out- the clerical assistant- ME!

Has anyone else suffered because of this holiday?

Kaos 04-21-2004 09:52 AM

First off, I would like to say it's a rediculous, bullshit holiday.

With that said, If they are going to celebrate this "holiday", they should recognize everyone. That really sucks Rubyee, and must feel de-motivating in your job :(

tkkfan 04-21-2004 09:52 AM

Im sorry to hear you were left out. It happened at my work also, one girl was left out. Regardless of the holiday or reason, it doesn't ever feel nice

I suffer because I have to do the operator/cashier job along with my job for a few hrs while they eat catered food and stuff.

I think this is a very dumb holiday; just an excuse for more bullshit.

onetime2 04-21-2004 09:53 AM

Well, I had to take 3 Admins out for lunch a couple of years ago and none of them got along. In fact two of them absolutely hated each other. I'd say that counts as suffering.

water_boy1999 04-21-2004 10:16 AM

I am sorry, but I too feel this is a bullshit holiday. Where is Salesperson Day? I work my ass off, a lot harder than the admins, assistants, and secretaries in my company but I don't see a day dedicated to me! WTF?????

On the flipside, I do appreciate the work that the aforementioned have done for me so I have plenty of admiration for their work. I say thanks by taking them to lunch, buying candy, etc., throughout the year though so I am covered.

Averett 04-21-2004 10:24 AM

I think it's a bullshit holiday too. And I'm an "Administrative Assistant."

Want to show your appreciation? Give me a fucking raise! I've been here nearly 2 years now, and I've gotten a $0.42 raise. That just happened about a month ago, and I think it was one of those cost of living type things.

I started out part time doing jack shit really. Now I'm full time and I've taken over the full time Executive Secretary job as well as my own. And I'm starting to do contract administration for a product line. I'm really doing the job of 3 people.

SO GIVE ME A RAISE!!!

Oh, I got nothing today for this stupid holiday. Other secretaries in other departments did. Boo.

I just checked the Hallmark website (not for that - a friend's birthday was yesterday) and it's now called "Administrative Professionals" day.
I guess that leaves out fewer people, thus selling more cards & flowers.

Where I work, it's an eight-person office - 3 Partners/Owners, 2 architects, and 3 "administrative professionals". Between today and Bosses' Day, everybody gets taken care of except us two architects :(

Anyway - Happy AP day, everyone. I think we all wear that hat in one way or another throughout the year.

The general sentiment of this thread seems to be "Administrative Assistant's Day sucks, but I want a gift anyway", which is a hypocritical viewpoint.

SpikeQX99 04-21-2004 10:38 AM

I agree! Happy administrative professional days. You guys are the ones that make it happen!

No, the sentiment of this thread is Administrative Assistant's Day sucks BECAUSE I didn't get a gift, and I should have- I deserve it more than other people. I warned you at the beginning of this thread that it was just a rant that I am sure other people shared with me.

And thank you for the gifts, RedLemon.

Yeah well... So? :p

I was just talking about it to my boss and a few other guys. My boss didn't even know about it. Said he feels like Homer Simpson

Hell, I don't really care. They've taken good care of me for Christmas. $250 gift certificate to the mall the past 2 years :D

*Still waiting for Purchasing Agent's Day to come along*

I do feel for ya, Rubyee. Ya got fucked, and not in a nice way, either. Say the word, and we'll do dinner on one of the boats over on your side. ;)

Lasereth 04-21-2004 01:34 PM

I'd order a vase and gift certificate to be delivered to your office with your name on it. They'd probably be pretty damned embarassed.

Administrative Assistant's day?

wtf?

This is something that is wholly American/Canadian, I guess... I'm a Brit and we do fine with just Mother's Day and Father's Day.

When's network engineer's day?

feelgood 04-21-2004 02:21 PM

Where the hell is Feelgood's day?

Please....
If two of the AAs up in Admin don't stop screwing with every setting on either thier computers or phones, and then saying "it just started doing it" when I show up to fix it, I'm going to find a .45 and a shovel.

Feeling sorry for yourself?

The "holiday" is meant to be a way for management to show appreciation for secretaries (which is what Admin Assistants used to be called).

And, to be perfectly honest, how on Earth did you "SUFFER"?

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Mr Mephisto

twotimesadingo 04-21-2004 03:41 PM

I'm actually with Mephisto on this one. Don't be pissed off 'cause you got left out, and then call it a stupid holiday.

This is the one day of the year the four assholes my mom works for turn around and give her something, and take the time to let her know they appreicate the 55-hour weeks she puts in. And frankly, I think it should be a monthly thing, not merely an annual occassion.

So, from my mom to all you: "Fuck y'all! It's a great holiday!" :p

Traff 04-21-2004 07:06 PM

Well phtttt (raspberry) to you!

From Rubyee- she didn't log out of my name.

The secretaries have control over the executive scheduals. =)

Mwahahahahaha :p

I got a really nice ceramic pitcher from one of the bosses today. He said "I wouldn't know about these things if it weren't for my wife"

And really, aren't wives and secretaries the same thing?

I shall now take my tongue out of my cheek ;)

That's funny, my mom actually reminded my dad last night that he had to get something for his administrative assistant today.

sailor 04-22-2004 07:20 PM

I just love how the name keeps changing. First it was secretary, then when that was deemed politically incorrect, it went to administrative assistant. Now I guess it is called an administrative professional. Wonderful. Being PC is so much fun
