Victoria's Secret to drop TV fashion show

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Victoria's Secret is dropping its nationally televised fashion show this year, at least partly because of criticism following Janet Jackson's breast-baring faux pas at the Super Bowl.

Ed Razek, chief creative officer for the Columbus-based lingerie chain, said Saturday the main reason for the decision was so the company can look at new ways to promote the brand. Still, he said, "We had to make the decision probably six to eight weeks ago when the heat was on the television networks."

The announcement came less than three months after the Jackson uproar and a week after federal regulators proposed $495,000 in fines against Clear Channel Communications for sexual material on the Howard Stern show.

The televised fashion show has generated criticism in the past from groups complaining about supermodels strutting down the runway in skimpy underwear.

A message left Saturday at the New York office of CBS, which has televised the show the past two years, was not immediately returned.

Olga Vives, vice president of the National Organization for Women, praised the cancelation, saying the show only objectifies women.

"We're concerned young women think they have to look this way," Vives said, adding she hoped the cancelation is permanent.

"There are many other ways to promote their product."

The fashion show, which aired in November the last two years, was televised on ABC in 2001. The first show was broadcast online in 1999; 1.5 million visitors tried to log on at once, bringing the site down within 20 minutes.

Victoria's Secret has $4 billion in annual sales.

what a sad country when perfectly natural body parts (in most cases outside of the adult entertainment industry) and "strong language" scare people.

Most fashion shows outside the U.S. contain toplessness and even skimpier underwear- so what's the point, exactly?

the whole things sounds a bit tacky, but I dont see why they shouldnt be allowed to do it, perhaps I cant speak on it, but I dont think the majority of women find fashion shows that feature lingere as being offensive or derogatory

The US is definitely the most repressed country that I have ever seen about nudity. I am not sure that I understand how the human body came to be so completely awful and dirty in the eyes of our lawmakers but it is sad.

If you applied the same standards to other things, you wouldn't be able to see a picture of a gun because they can be used to kill. No pictures of food either becuase some people eat too much!

We can watch murder after murder on TV but a tittie might push some poor bastard over the edge! Can't have that now, can we?

Surprise nudity is one thing. Scheduled shows where you know you'll hear sexually explict language or partial nudity are totally different. You can just turn the show off if you don't want to see it. Go ahead and edit nudity and explicit language during football or at times when kids would be watching but during shows where you expect it there's no need to freak out about it.

Alternatively, you could move to Canada. In all the hooplah and re-playing of the titty incident, I personally haven't seen any censoring/blurring of the boob in question (Janet's, not Justin himself) on Canadian networks.

PS - I hear BBC America will now be carrying Trailer Park Boys, only they'll be bleeping out the profanities. Good luck following the dialogue :)

Funny thing is that they're still showing the commercials. There isn't anything on the show that isn't on the commercials. In essence its just a long commercial. Evil commercials
