Andy Rooney said on 60 minutes a few weeks back: (for those of you that don't know Andy Rooney, he is an 82 year old US TV commentator)

I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers. The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see what happens. Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.

I couldn't agree any fucking more. I mean our national language is English. We're not like Canada where we have two national languages english and spanish. it's just english. either speak it or get the fuck out. the whole not speaking english really strikes a cord with me as i'm a telemarketer and the people that either speak no english or little english are really fucking rude or stupid. sometimes i can't tell. damn this has got me worked up, i gotta step away for a second

I think all of us white people can remember the last time we were pulled over by the police for being white. Wait. No. Whoops. I forgot that white people don't get pulled over because they are white.

I don't think affirmative action is the answer, but it is clear to me that white people have been benefitting from de facto affirmative action for a long fucking time. Until i hear white people complaining about all of the ways they benefit from such things while they're complaining about other races benefitting from aa i could care less about the plight of the poor, put off white person. Cry me a river. Don't play the victim and you won't be a victim.

People who don't speak english aren't stupid. Are you stupid because you don't speak Chinese, or Spanish or Swahili?

I disagree with almost everything I said, I believe he speaks for the minority of interests in America, he speaks for the all of the worst ideals and everything that is negative.

Just reading this actually makes me start to feel physically angry, not only the basic wrongness of what he says, but the arrogant smugness of his tone, the way he imagines or portrays himself as speaking for ordinary people and common sense.

60 Minutes should face fines for airing this sort of thing - on the basis that Janet Jacksons bared breast offends the nation, this kind of intolerant, racist, hateful and nasty minded rant is surely a lot more offensive to a decent sense of morality.

The children of the nation are going to be harmed a great deal more by being exposed to people like Rooney than they are by being exposed to a bizzare nipple piercing.

And of course, the "speak English" comment is especially offensive and ridicolous... didnt you all know it was the Spanish who colonised America first? If you cant speak Cherokee, then learn Spanish old man, THAT is the language of the European Americans... it isnt the Spanish speaking people who are outsiders in America, it is those who speak English, they are the outsiders, they are the one's to be excluded... they were there first, and if you cant understand Spanish, either learn to speak it old man, or stop complaining that you cannot understand the American language, or get the hell out and move to England where they speak your language.

1, you are a telemarketer... this does afford you a great deal of moral high ground. Of course people are rude, when you call them up in the evening when they are trying eat dinner or relax and try to force some sales pitch for some product they probably dont want on them. English speaking has nothing to do with it, when telemarketers call me it annoys the hell out of me too, and I am English, and can even speak English well enough to be able to spell words like "colour" and "paedophile"

2, I am not going to repeat what I already said - America was settled by Spanish speaking people, not English speakers. Spanish is the natural language of America, not English. If you cant speak Spanish, then you are speaking a foriegn language... how on earth can you get upset with American people because they dont speak your foriegn language? Are you suggesting that people shouldn't be able to speak another language in the USA? Agreed, the official language may be english, but that only requires them to serve you in the marketplace and provide government services to you in that language.

Don't presume to tell people what language they can speak in their homes, on the streets, on the subway. The people you reach as a telemarketer are not soliciting your service (are they?), and thus are not required to understand you, no matter what language you, or they speak.

Andy Rooney, doesn't speak like that, he's not a racist, he's not even really a conservative. I've been watching him for many years, and his gripes never reach this level of political speech.

George Carlin, while funny and clever (which these statements are not), is a confirmed liberal.

I don't agree with many of his close minded views, but there are several comments he makes that I do agree with. Point is, he is exercising his first amendment right as an American. We can get all riled up over a few comments he makes, but remember that there are few countries where you wouldn't be jailed, fined, beaten, etc. for speaking your mind.

That's not relevant. Nobody's trying to deny anyone's rights. Except for the quoted, whoever he is, would seem content to not have to deal with others who are exercising their rights. Indeed, most of the things he complains about are instances where people are merely exercising their rights. He seems pretty riled up about other people exercising their rights. In fact, i'd wager that this fellow would have no problem with people being jailed or beaten if they happened to not agree with him.

Let's face it - all the remarks are right wing, conservative opinions.
How many of them you agree with just shows where you stand politically.

Being (I think) a moderate, I agree with some, and disagree with some.

lol...so let me get this straight, when you call people at home during the dinner hour you would like them to speak proper English so that you can bother them properly and make sure that you fully understand their objections before administering your "objection handlers" so that you can bother them more; and you support your arguement about language with liberal use of obscenities, which are generally considered the basest form of language. hmmm

If you are a white male, try growing out your hair and driving a volkswagon beetle.. see how often you get pulled over. You will get pulled.. A LOT.. simply for your appearance. Cops pull over people who they think look like criminals. I seriously doubt a black man dressed like your usual suburban caucasion dork is going to get pulled more frequently than your usual caucasion suburban dork.

And he's not a racist. Most of these views are not just conservative, they're discriminatory. Andy Rooney is a cool guy, I'd be disappointed if he started spewing crap like that.

Are you claiming that white privilege doesn't exist? That's not even a good comparison. The point is many black people don't have to go out of their way to look suspicious in the eye of your average racial profiler. The average cop may be right when he assumes that the average hippy looking fella probably has drugs on him. Unfortunatly there has been at least one study that i'm aware of that found that the police are more likely to pull over nonwhites than whites. How would you feel if it was fairly normal for your average white person between the ages of 16 and, say, 60 to get pulled over simply because they "fit the description" or "looked suspicious"? Does that sound good to you?

I'm not trying to claim that all cops are bigots. I'm just trying to point out just one of the ways that white people have been reaping the benefits of unofficial aa for a long time.
