Thunderstorms

The spring rains have started a bit early and right now outside there is a nice steady rain falling and thunder about every two minutes.

I love a nice thunderstorm...not the violent could lead to a tornado kind mind you. Just a nice steady rain with periodic thunder. It's a very pleaaaaaaasing sound. I think I'll open a bottle of wine... :)

Anyone else enjoy the rain?

Karby 03-20-2004 01:32 PM

ooooh! i do!
but not the kind that eventually floods your house, and causes city wide emergencies or anything like that. just the kind that patters softly at your window.

I love full-blown thunderstorms!! I'll pass on tornados and hurricanes though. We haven't had one in a while, either....

doomdoom 03-20-2004 05:52 PM

i only like them when they are in warm weather, otherwise its just snow thats too lazy to freeze

here here!.. thunderstorms with lightening that straks across the sky and thunder that shakes your house. Rain that comes down so hard it hurts... very cool. Tornados Hurricanes and damaging lightening is bad though, fo' shizzy haha.

Just to relax though.. and all day slow rain with rolling thunder is the best.

sailor 03-20-2004 06:25 PM

I used to sit on the porch of my lakehouse as a kid and watch the storms roll across the lake. Ahh, memories of childhood summers...

As for hurricanes, I can remember Hugo, which rolled through when I was four. I still remember looking out the window and seeing the pine tree in our front yard bending over, looking for all the world like it was about to obliterate our house.

To truly enjoy a thunderstorm though, I think it is best to be somewhere where there are no other distractions--a cabin in the mountains, my house (cabin) at the lake... Places where there are no distractions, no pressing needs, and you can just sit there and watch the storm roll by.

Early Spring is the best.

Sitting on the back step listening to the ballgame. Cigar in one hand and a beer in the other. All the while watching the thunderheads roll in.

I put my bed right next to the window just to catch those late night storms. I just seem to sleep that much easier.

viejo gringo 03-20-2004 08:26 PM

Love those "light" thunderstorms...I know the flowers will be blooming in the morning--oh yea, I have tomatos already....

....gets wine glass and joins kjork on the porch....

FaderMonkey 03-20-2004 09:12 PM

I really miss thunderstorms. I'm from Florida where I grew up with them, but now I live in Los Angeles and we never get them. We get some rain in the winter, but almost never thunderstorms. It sucks. Tell the thunderstorm I said hi.

analog 03-20-2004 09:27 PM

I love the rain... i REALLY love lightning... it's just too cool... and the crashing thunder afterwards... great stuff!

amonkie 03-20-2004 09:52 PM

Yes, the thunderstorm that dumped hail on Phoenix was really awesome to watch, once I got off the road. :)

hannukah harry 03-21-2004 02:27 AM

the only thing i love more than thunderstorms are snowstorms (as far as meteorological stuff goes).

one of my favorite storm memories was from when i was 16 or 17... i was driving down a main road in my town during a nice thunderstorm... and all of a sudden while i was stopped at a light it abaited (abated?) and the sky turned a lovely shade of green with a very light rain... then the sky started dropping rain again like a drunk man at the pisser. ah, memories...

Jack Ruby 03-21-2004 03:22 AM

Wind nearly blew me away yesterday. No lightning though :( I love heavy snow, or extreme heat, as well... Just about any extreme weather condition as long as it doesn't last too long.

Wank in a thunderstorm - you'll feel like Thor !

seretogis 03-21-2004 05:59 AM

I really enjoy thunderstorms of all shapes and sizes. It would be interesting to be able to go back to a time when lightning and thunder was a scolding from the gods, and rain was a boon.

03-21-2004 11:07 AM

Ooh, I love thunderstorms, as well. Especially in the evening and if the lights go out. Even if they don't, it's still really nice.

Shady 03-21-2004 12:39 PM

thunderstorms make me want to fall asleep

NoLa 03-21-2004 04:56 PM

Yes, they are very soothing. We have a screened in porch its nice to sit out there during a thunderstorm, watching the rain fall.

Bleed Me Dry 03-21-2004 06:06 PM

I love thunderstorms. The high speed winds, lightening and thunderous booms. The only problem is that out in good ole' Colorado we only get a couple of good ones a year.:(

FleaCircus 03-21-2004 07:40 PM

Lightning's cool when it's not close. I was watching a thunderstorm from my front door once and lightnight struck my neighbor's maple tree, about twenty feet from where I was standing.

It was very bright and very loud. Scared the shit out of me--it blew bark from the tree all over the place, and the tree split and threatened to fall on my car.

Otherwise, though, I'm good with the thunderstorms.

mingusfingers 03-21-2004 07:49 PM

Puts me in a good mood, too. Really heavy downpour is awesome. And the smell after.

denim 03-21-2004 09:23 PM

What a relaxing thread to read right before bed. :)

mattevil 03-21-2004 09:42 PM

used to like them then one took out my video capture card and cd burner two days after their warranties ran out so now not as much.

onodrim 03-22-2004 08:05 PM

I've always loved rain, and thunderstorms in particular. It doens't get much better than cuddling up in bed with a good book and a nice storm going on outside. :)

...Okay, I lied, I suppose having sex with a nice storm going on outside might be better. :p

Soggybagel 03-22-2004 08:31 PM

Well I don't relaly like them. I especially don't like when the thunder is so just thunderiffic that it shakes my house.

iccky 03-22-2004 08:39 PM

Summer thunderstorms are incredible.

One of the few problems I have with my girlfriend is that she doesn't like them :(.

Of course here theres still an inch of snow on the ground and its 20 degrees out  .

elpha 03-22-2004 09:08 PM

no kidding, i love the smell of the air, sort of earthy damp smell.

now i miss home... :(

i just remember sitting in my room, and it being the perfect temperature...

Cycler 03-23-2004 06:27 AM

Good times. I've almost been hit by lightning riding a bicycle across Oklahoma. I felt the air expand, light flashed, and then then thunder was overwhelming. My that got me to the next town in a hurry. What about rain in a tent> Now that is fun.

TroutKind 03-23-2004 04:36 PM

I love the smell of fresh rain, and the sights and sounds of thunderstorms. when i was stationed in Texas the most amazing thunderstorms would roll through, some would cause tornados, by most just produced an intense light show and rain. I like the sight of dark cumulonimbus clouds cruising across the landscape heading right for you!

Sounds like a plan to me!;)

MSD 03-25-2004 08:26 AM

I love thunderstorms. I'm in a heavily wooded area up on a huge hill, so I get all the lightning. One of the coolest things I've ever seen is a tree being hit by lightning, and every leaf falling off as the bark pretty much exploded off. It left a bare, barkless tree with a charred mark down the side where the lightning arced down the side.

What isn't as cool is trees falling on my house and car, but that only happened a couple of times, and there was no real damage.

Peryn 03-25-2004 10:07 AM

Man, i love thunder, but its so rare. Its like a holiday celebration when we get one here. Maybe a few days of rain if a major storm rolls through in the winter...but thunder... man, thats like every couple years we get a few claps. Its awesome, but rediculous how rare it is.

ariekitten 03-26-2004 12:05 AM

thunderstorms r nice :)

SabrinaFair 03-26-2004 05:22 AM

Mmmm....going to sleep during a thunderstorm.
Or making love on a rainy afternoon...
Or dancing in the rain...
Watching lightening from my window, drinking wine...

Yeah, I like non-freezing precipitation events. :-)

BoCo 03-26-2004 06:53 AM

It's been raining here all morning with flash flood warnings coming on the radio every 15 minutes to remind us that it's raining.

I WANNA RIDE MY BIKE, DAMMIT!!!

Evil Milkman 03-26-2004 10:32 AM

I love them, but only when they're a rarity. Kinda like too much of a good thing sometimes.

Midnight_Son 03-26-2004 11:02 AM

We got a nice storm last night, good rain and a boom every now and then.......I slept better last night than I have all winter.

jobu 03-26-2004 11:38 AM

i love that dry sort of smell that you get on a summer day just before it rains. you don't hear any insects becasue they are all taking cover. i love sitting on my proch when it rains and having that light mist blow into my face. it is very relaxing.

My sentiments, exactly.

When I lived in Arizona, it was incredible to watch the monsoon thunderstorms roll in across the valley - great light show during the rare nighttime T-storms. It would usually rain for an hour or so, then clear up for another spectacular sunset. It always lowered the temperature by about 25 degrees, too - which was nice.

Now that I'm in Houston, the novelty has definitely worn off. Now, thunderstorms mean the probability of tornadoes, floods, and, although unimagineable - just as hot - and even worse humidity than before. Oh - and then comes hurricane season.
/wonders why he's still here . . . .

Vales419 03-26-2004 03:41 PM

Thunderstorms are the best, but SEVERE ones are excellent. I am the only person that I know, when SIRENS go off, I am out in my car and around chasing the severe weather. I live for the shit!!

Ditto to what most everybody here said.
