SELF-CLEANING RESTROOMS

Seattle now has 5 self-cleaning restrooms for the public at no charge, although they costed millions of dollars.

SEATTLE – Seattle marked the debut of its long-anticipated automated toilet facilities today, with grand openings in Pioneer Square and Capitol Hill. On hand to provide the “first flush” in Pioneer Square, Seattle City Council President Jan Drago said the facilities would “make Seattle a more hospitable place for all people to live, work, shop and visit.”

The automated public toilets were first conceived in the late 1980s after several downtown business and service organizations cited the lack of public restroom facilities as the number one issue facing Seattle’s downtown. Drago, who was a downtown business owner before being elected to the Council in 1993, said that City officials intended to meet that demand for restrooms, but could never agree how to pay for it, especially since companies who supplied the toilets wanted advertisements on the outside of the facilities as well as in bus shelters throughout the city.

In 2001, the Council finally approved a plan for five automated toilets to be installed throughout the greater downtown area by using sewer fees to pay the maintenance contracts. The bill was vetoed by then-Mayor Paul Schell, but the Council overrode that veto in the interest of moving forward with providing the public toilets.

“These facilities are self-cleaning, safe, well situated throughout the City and are free for anyone to use,” said Councilmember Nick Licata, who attended the grand opening. “They will be beneficial to local businesses because tourists, shoppers, residents and the homeless are equally accommodated.”

Councilmember Richard Conlin attended the grand opening of the automated facility in Capitol Hill.

The five automated public toilet locations are:
· Occidental Park in Pioneer Square
· Hing Hay Park in the International District
· Victor Steinbrueck Park at the Pike Place Market
· Waterfront Park at Pier 59
· 1800 block of Broadway on Capitol Hill

The facilities are wheelchair accessible and include a toilet, trash disposal container and hand-washing facilities. The toilet seat and the floor are automatically cleaned after each use. The maintenance contractor will check each unit twice a day and provide additional cleaning if necessary. There are sensors that detect whether someone is in the unit and the cleaning features will not work if someone is inside. The doors are programmed to open automatically if someone is in the unit for 15 minutes, with a recorded message warning that the doors are about to open. In case of a medical or police emergency, users can alert 911 from inside.

I can't wait till someone sues because they were taking an hour long dump and the doors opened...

This reminds me of the Travel Channel show where they showed the $4k toilet.

There's one of these in Herald Square across from Macy's in NYC. Eh, it's not all that and a bag of chips...

When I was on vacation in Paris, the tour guide mentioned that there were self-cleaning pay toilets in Paris. She warned us not to try to cheat the toilet. She explained that when somebody paid and went in they started the 'in use' part of the cycle. When they exited and the door closed, that started the cleaning part of the cycle. Somebody tried to cheat by entering when the first person exited. The second person got a nice suprise of a free shower courtesy of the cleaning cycle. Maybe an urban legend, but funny anyway.

self cleaning toilets, huh? that reminds me, i need to make a trip to seattle and steal one of those. put it my bathroom.

^^^ it's a whole self-cleaning unit. Every so often, the doors close and the whole restroom gets washed and sprayed down with disinfectant.

Hmm, my mom lives in Seattle -- it may be time for a visit so I can see for myself just how good these are. Personally, I wouldn't mind a self cleaning restroom! (And why I'm at it, a carpet that vacuums itself, counters that wash themselves, and so on.)

I'm not one to say help the poor, but this is a time where I'll say it. Why spend millions of dollars when you could greatly help a bunch of homeless folks? I mean, that is a ton of money to spend for 5 bathrooms.

You want an honest answer? Because homeless folks don't vote or add revenue to businesses in that area.

I've been in one in Paris, they really aren't all that great. Also, the whole 15 minute thing could come into effect big time. I know some guys who can take longer than that, and get one of those in there and you got lawsuit.

I passed one of these the other day... I was like, AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! ALIEMS!!! But then I realized that it was a bathroom, and was like... Cool. It was the pike place market one. I'm gonna see if i can use all 5 in a week.

Getting one of these for our apartment would be so great! Having 3 guys use one bathroom leaves it pretty messy :(

there's a few of these in downtown san jose, ca, but they're not free. maybe 50cents or a dollar. i forget.
i've seen them, but never gone into one myself.

when they make self cleaning houses, sign me up!! :lol:

yeah my writing teacher mentinoed these...but imagine how expensive hte costs are, and what happens if some little part malfunctions...mess everywhere

I give them 3 days tops before they are vandalised.

They have been in Europe for years. Old hat, pssshhhh. Nice idea though.

Self cleaning toilets. What worthless invention will they think of next. Not that going to the bathroom isn't important, but you've got to draw the line somewhere.

These are so much better than the open air urinals I've seen in SoHo... Apparently the streets were getting a bit rank after nights of revelry so the councils had these trucked in for the guys who just had to go...
