This exchange of courtesies between virus-writers has undoubtedly worsened the situation on the Internet, causing a serious epidemiological incident. Indeed, this latest incident may cause some to think that the Internet has been irrevocably transformed into an arena for a bloody battle of the viruses.
'It's hard to imagine a more comical situation: a handful of virus writers are playing unpunished with the Internet, and not one member of the Internet community can take decisive action to stop to this lawlessness,' commented Eugene Kaspersky, Head of Anti-Virus Research at Kaspersky Labs. 'The problem is not that no-one wants to change the situation, but that the current architecture of the Internet is completely inconsistent with information security.'

Kaspersky Labs points out that similar incidents will continue to occur with increasing frequency until effective methods for the prevention, detection and neutralisation of virus attacks are implemented on the Internet, with creators of malicious programs being prosecuted. Until this is done, any attempt to counter-act virus epidemics will be purely reactive, with unco-ordinated passive defenses failing to significantly change things for the better.

I run bareback on the net, no AV or firewalls at all, and I haven't gottena virus since Nimda, and the only reason I got that was infected webservers sent it to me thru a shittily secured browser (IE). Viruses only happen to ppl who don't pay attention to what's coming in IMO, or are too trusting with attachments. I won't open an attachment unless the person has sent me a PM or email that they're going to do so before hand, what it is and the filesize. I also only accept attachments from trusted ppl. I've not gotten a virus in over 2 years.

It also sounds like the guys is very much in favor of govt. control of the internet, so they can "protect" us from such things. All while knowing every damn thing i do. Liberty or liability, i suppose is the begged question.

lets hope eventually all the viruses that are being sent to the masses destroy each other so us innocents (I use that loosly;) don't have to worry about them.

I think certain programmers need to get out more.

I can`t help the feeling that this crap is just kids playing. Even so, I`m lost as to how the problem should be dealt with.

What "business" are they referring to? Could it be that the virus detection community is involved in ensuring their own prosperity? Or is the anti-IE crowd involved? Linux? SCO?

Somebody is making money off of this whole thing, I think. There has to be a whole lot more going on than rival pimple-pusses being vicious for fun.

My inherent paranoia doesn't disqualify these feelings. I surf defensinvely with good reason.

I'm still working on a 3-phase modem that can send a 7200 volt packet to virus writers. If I can just get the amps down.....

My point exactly! The first thing I thought of is either some sort of conspiracy, or one of the security giants is making us eat our worms and eventually turn that to profit.
