Magnetic Vision (via magnetic implants)

found this article on bmezine.com
about this guy who got a magnetic implant in his finger and is able to sense magnetic fields....

Quote:
I am now able to perceive magnetic fields in ways not naturally possible. The sensation is different than holding a magnet, as the neurons are stimulated with a higher resolution. With the implant I can detect subtle changes in polarity and strength that I cannot when equipped with a magnet in the conventional manner. Yet the most significant observations have come from another property of implants, their relative permanence to exogenous artifacts. Being able to perceive magnetic fields has expanded my conscious perception of magnetic fields ‘in the wild’.
thats just part of whats on the site for the rest of it go to http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20040226.html

I found this way way cool... its basically giving yourself a 6th sense...

i would get one in a second... if i didnt work on computers so much...

Weird, but very cool indeed.
Although I fail to see the functionality behind such an implant. The guy did say that he didn't either and that it was just an experiment though.

Personally I doubt I'd actually do something like that, even if I wasn't around computers most of the time.

He did say one very interesting thing though, about the computerinterface technology advancing at a snails pace. I have always had the same opinion, most especially because I suffer from RSI.
I can't see people (even die-hard computerguys) implanting stuff in them just to interface better with their pc though.

At this moment in time I'm trying to think of anything that would make it impractical for me to do this. I can't come up wiht anything at the moment, and it would be a really cool experiment. In the worst case, it's removable.

I wonder if he'd set off the anti-theft things anywhere? I guess he didn't at the library so probably nowhere else, but it'd be annoying. Sort of like that prank you play on your friends by putting one of those magnetic theft labels in his wallet or something and laughing as he gets harassed by security at best buy....

LOL.

Yeah, that sounds cool and everything, but that wouldn't have much purpose for me. It'd be cool to have when you're...uh...well, um, it'd just be cool to have.

I think this may be a crude step toward developing a kind of electromagnetic implant that could receive electromagnetic signals and send them directly to the brain??? I don't know...just thinking aloud

Are you talking like mind control there or more like a really portable cellular phone?

I was thinking of both, but the mind control/ESP thing is the most interesting thing, if they can have these ear implants that stimulate the ear nerves, why not something that passes messages to the brain?
