Doctor Phil's Test

This is a nifty test thing my friend sent me over email, thought i'd share it with y'all.

Dr. Phil's Test,

Now add up the total number of points.

> > > > OVER 60 POINTS: Others see you as someone they should "handle with care." You're seen as vain, self-centered, and who is extremely dominant.. Others may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.

> > > > 51 TO 60 POINTS: Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality; a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once; someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.

> > > > 41 TO 50 POINTS: Others see you as fresh, lively, charming, amusing, practical, and always interesting; someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well-balanced not to let it go to their head. They also see you as kind, considerate, and understanding; someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.

> > > > 31 TO 40 POINTS: Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful &practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest. Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over if that trust is ever broken.

> > > > 21 TO 30 POINTS: Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy. They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder. It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then, usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature..

> > > >UNDER 21 POINTS: People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions &who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist. Some people think you're boring. Only those who know you well know that you aren't.

I got 36 points, which fits me pretty well

hmmmmmmmmmm. I'd like to see the validity scores of this test. Is this based on empirical evidence? How do we know that there is a correlation between walking style and perception of self by others? This is the problem with pop psychology, you can't tell what's scientifically validated from mere opinion of a "specialist." Taken as a fun little game type thing, this quiz would be all right. But for some people, this is the only exposure to professional psychology they get.

I got a 40, and it is what most people have described me as. I saw a special about Dr. Phil on TV and he didnt seem like the most objective man, in the least. But this seems to work out.

It is obviously a generalization and not to be taken seriously, but it is amusing and interesting.

Something tells me validity isn't a huge part of it, and it can be taken as such, i just enjoy taking stuff like this to see how it comes out. But you can take the results either way.

I didn't mean to seem like I feel the test is worthless, it is fun. It's just that seeing "Dr." in front of the guy's name that made this test puts me at nerve. I'm just afraid that some people just may take the results of a test too seriously just because a pop psychologist endorses it.

hmmm...a 42. Somewhat accurate, although I'm probably more of a mix of that one and the 31-40 range.

42 for me....

I don't find that an unpleasent way for others to view me, so I'm okay with the test.

Now I'm back to filling out bubbles on the MMPI-2 my wife's psy grad-student buddy got us. Eager to see what those results are, I am.

Charming, Amusing, well balanced, kind, considerate, undersatnding, and helpful -- yes

intresting or center of attention - no

I really should be in the 31-40 range, that description fits me so much better.

54. And the description was fairly accurate.

This probably holds about as much water as the MMPI or the Myers-Briggs. Which is to say, it's fun, could shed some light on some things, a nifty little tool, but ultimately doesn't really say much about who you are.

I scored 46 and find it fairly accurate up to a certain point
although I tend to recognise large parts of my character in the bracket between 31 and 40.

these sort of tests are usually based on some kind of psychology, but tend to be altered or simplified to be more acceptable and easy to do by the masses.

still fun tho

Excellent points. I would guess that this test has not been validated. It probably belongs in Tilted Nonsense.

People like Dr. Phil give good psychologists a bad name. That being said, if you take the test for what it is, likely unreliable, unvalidated, and lacking good science, it doesn't do any harm.

I don't put much stock in tests of this kind that you do yourself. You and your close friends are the best "evaluators" of who you are and who you present yourself to be. There can be some truth found in body language as presenting a certain image to others. Those who walk upright and quickly usually give a very different impression from those who are more hunched, looking down, and walk slower. I don't pay close attention to these tests. The usefulness in them lies in the fact that you are "examining" yourself to see if you match the description. Even if you don't match the description you have still taken a look at yourself which can still be useful.

I scored a 42. It does give a pretty good description of how I view myself and how others have described me.

Obviously I'm missing my calling to be a famous talk show host who makes a million billion dollars a year.

These tests are usually generally accurate. But no matter how hard you try you can't pigeon-hole someone in two or three sentences.

Well, it's not meant to sound that bad, it's just people who tend to be overly forceful, or have been taught to express emotion or affection through that kind of interaction. Not the best way to go about things in the long run, but it's not horrible.
