Out of weed - need help.

Well, I smoked the last of my current stash last night, and I've decided that since I've hardly been drug free for a year now, I should at least try and give up, even if it's only temporary.

Thing is, tonight's going to be the first night for a while that I've not been stoned. I don't want to smoke anything for a while, period. I know I'm going to be wanting to pretty hard tonight.

Anyone got any suggestions, advice, nasty things to say that might help/send me into a suicidal spiral?

Nisses 02-11-2004 03:38 AM

yeah, uhm, don't do weed? :p

Honestly, learn to have fun without doing weed. There are lots of things you can do, so pay attention to them instead of weed. You don't need motivation to give up weed. If you wanna quit for at least a while, just keep your mind on other things besides weed.
Hmm, I just noticed all my sentences ended with the word weed :D
Also, I quit smoking and went through package after package of toothpicks, if only to have something in my mouth, maybe you can find a similar substitute for weed?

Hope any of this helps...weed! :)

jwoody 02-11-2004 04:17 AM

I've drastically reduced my weed intake recently (from 7 days a week to one) and one thing I've noticed is that I'm having very vivid dreams / nightmares and waking up a couple of hours after I put my head down.

An hour or so of reading or total relaxation before I go to bed helps a lot.

After a couple of weeks of this I've already noticed that I'm much more alert and have energy to burn.

its gonna be about 30 days till its out of your system so you'll be cravin it hard for that amount of time.Evidently its dramatically easier after that. I guess you should look into things that satisfy a regular smokers needs like carrot sticks for the oral fixation part.

Shokan 02-11-2004 05:43 AM

Hey, weed-quitting buddy! I ran out last friday after about 2 and a half years of daily smoking. Decided to try to stop.

First couple of days I was very irritable and felt violent. I decided that I only smoked weed if I was sitting near my computer. So I've tried doing other stuff to get my mind off it. I've taken up reading a few books and playing my GameCube more.

Anything to distract you from the opportunity to smoke, do it. ALWAYS KEEP BUSY. Even if that involves house work or other boring shit you never do when stoned.

Good luck.

feelgood 02-11-2004 06:12 AM

Haven't had one since July 2002. I think I'm gonna get some this weekend for old time's sake...

Rodney 02-11-2004 06:17 AM

If you don't mind putting on a few pounds, ice cream is good. It will calm you down some, make life seem a little better. All the other _constructive_ suggestions are good, too.

wannabenakid247 02-11-2004 06:42 AM

I would go out on the piss and smoke a shit load of fags to take my mind off it.

This is obviously not the healthiest option though.

Cynthetiq 02-11-2004 07:14 AM

put your pipes, lighters, ashtrays, bongs, papers, and other paraphanalia away. Out of sight out of mind. keep yourself busy with friends that either respect your choice of abstinence or hang with different friends until they understand you need a little room and respect.

krwlz 02-11-2004 07:19 AM

I quit for a month once, striaght up from 7 days a week. Its not that hard. Getting to sleep is harder, but the quality of sober sleep is so much better.

Just find things to do so that you arnt bored. Boredom is what drives me to pick up the old bowl after not smoking in a while.

I found the advice above really useful when I stopped. Of course, after stopping, my weed-smoking friends seemed dull to me. All they ever wanted to do was sit around and smoke weed.

bermuDa 02-11-2004 09:31 AM

I quit about 7 months ago... ya just don't need it bud!

Lebell 02-11-2004 10:21 AM

My only suggestion is to change your environment, move furniture, your computer, whatever, and make it different from when you smoked.

Change your habits, so that you aren't doing the same thing you were doing when you were lighting up.

Good luck!

02-11-2004 11:41 AM

Change your mind frame.
Not saying I am all tough, but I smoke it, but can live without it. There are days where I don't feel like it. I have a kid and also I know that I don't need it- simple as that. It's just a tool of enjoyment. I know that I can simply find enjoyment in life itself without weed. That is the only drug I do though, and I, for one, don't think of it as a drug. Your mind is the drug when it comes to weed- because it's really not addictive at all- It's a mental addiction- thinking that you need it to have a good time, lighten up, relax, release tension, etc. but there are natural methods of doing that. Play your favorite game, go for a nice walk, meditate, write, shoot hoops- whatever.
It's really all in the head. You are only needing it if you tell yourself you need it.

saltfish 02-11-2004 01:31 PM

You'd be amazed how differently to will look at the world after becoming sober. In a good way.

I spent almost 4 years stoned -- by that I mean daily, more than daily, 3-4 times a day. I had no idea what it had done to me, and where I had gone by doing it.

After becomming sober, on my own regard, I felt a tremendous difference. Yes, it was hard in the beginning, mainly because all of my friends were still doing it, and peer pressure is a bitch.

But beleive me, you are doing a good thing.

Drink lots of water, keep yourself busy, and stay away from those who might pressure you back into it.

meembo 02-11-2004 01:46 PM

Stay outside! The busier you are outside, the easier it is to focus on anything new, and you won't be sitting where you usually are getting stoned

Astrocloud 02-11-2004 02:10 PM

Take a B vitamin. I quit many times -it's really not that hard.

flamingdog 02-11-2004 02:28 PM

Okay, so I've made it through my first night, I think it's safe to say. I went into town with a couple of friends and had just a couple of drinks. Nice.

I'm not actually craving that hard.

So I'm going to set myself a little target... I dunno, the weekend, maybe. If I get there, I'll set another one for the next weekend. Eventually I will buy and light up again, because to quit completely I'd have to want to, and I don't.

But anytime I need a boost, I'll stop in here. You guys are awesome, I really appreciate it.

animosity 02-11-2004 02:48 PM

well when i quit teh refer i took up drinking... its better anyway. somking is just not my cup of tea(hmm... i wonder if you could make a good tea outta pot...?)

flamingdog 02-11-2004 02:51 PM

See smoking is very much my cup of tea. Drinking is not. I couldn't claim to be experienced in drugs, but alcohol is definitely the one that disagrees with me most violently... Just because it's legal, that don't mean it's good.

It gives me a headache within hours, I can't sleep on it, and I feel generally ill. And worst of all, when I'm bladdered, I want a joint.

MrFlux 02-11-2004 04:43 PM

I gave up buds just like *that*. The only thing I had trouble with was stopping myself and saying 'no' when I got offered some, it was basically just habit... I never had any real addiction to it.

You can do anything if you put your half-baked brain to it!

Well the border patrol picked up 750 pounds of it last night that you will not have to worry about...:D

InTeGrA77 02-11-2004 08:35 PM

Don't be a potato-head! Just quit, its bad for you anyways...

I'm sure you've got tons of better things to do than that.

runawayfetus 02-12-2004 04:27 PM

yea im starting to smoke a lot more... i should listen to u guys and not get to where u guys are smoking everyday etc. i gues i just never saw myself doing it excessively.. i should slow down,... thanks lol

Residual THC can take up to a month to fully leave the system, yes, but any amount that would cause any kind of craving would wear off quite quickly. The "addiction" is mostly mental, and can be easily gotten over.

I've known many hardcore stoners that quit and never looked back. Sure, they were bummed and wanted to light up for a week, but that's mostly because you're missing something you know makes you feel awesome. Just try and focus on the other things in your life that make you happy. That's what you'll be missing most, that extra and prolonged happiness.

Best of luck, bro, and congrats on the decision!

krwlz 02-13-2004 06:26 AM

Yea, its not that hard. Im a "weekend warrior". So for monday and maybe part of tuesday I crave it, but then Im fine again. Till friday night anyway...

Damn, todays friday too!

flamingdog 02-13-2004 07:28 AM

i think the worse thing is i smoke it with tobacco. it's the norm in these here parts. so i'm battling nicotine as well.

today i'm feeling a lot more clear headed and alert, and it's occured to me that i would save £160 this month if i can go through to next payday.

don't know what to spend it on though... maybe i'll save up for a trip to amsterdam.

I keep thinking about the weekend warrior idea, but i think it's harder when you've had a bad day at work and you've got a big bag of skunk sitting in your drawer going 'smoke me, you'll sleep better!' I'm not sure i can keep itgoing.

HockeyGuy 02-13-2004 09:38 AM

flaming, i've noticed you're from th eUk and when you mention smoking it with tobacco I know what you mean! I didn't used to smoke that much back in canada but now that i've come here ( I honestly don't know why) I've picked it up some more and it is the nicotine that is the worst bit. I don't smoke cigarettes but after a stressful night at work the thinking occurs 'whoa i could go for a joint'.... Good Luck to ya, I might join the anti bandwagon soon...

EDIT- May I add that I can't even stand the smell of cigarettes...

p0thead 02-13-2004 04:07 PM

quitting weed is easy. ive done it thousands of times... haha i think i heard someone say that about quitting smoking. ive tried to quit weed for a while, but its so hard. everytime i wanna play a game, watch a sporting event, turn on the tv, well anything - i just want to get high. hope it goes well for you, i'll be following your path soon. my chest hurts and cough out loogies every morning. ive been gettin high everyday for about 5 years now.. since i got outta jail at 19.

flamingdog 02-13-2004 04:27 PM

trouble ahead

I dunno, i don't intend to quit completely, just really tone it down, and prove to myself I can do it. Thing is, I'm on like, my third day, and I know I'm over the weed. It's the nicotine that's kicking me.

I should point out that I've been a fairly regular pot smoker for about four years now, but it's only in the last year that it's become a daily thing and started costing me a fortune.

So anyway, need more advice. My main smoking buddy is talking about hooking up this weekend, not specifically to get stoned, but to watch some movies with a couple of friends. Like as not there'll be some reefer on the go though.

Inevitably, it'll be offered to me. So what do I do? I'm not swearing off the stuff full stop, at least not in the long run. So do I decline politely just to prove my point, or do I take a few tokes to ease my aching head and reward myself for the past few days?

If I was wont to placate myself, I would say "It's buying and smoking every day I want to cut back on, not smoking it in general." But then the hard-nosed part of me comes in to say "That's a cop-out." Because after the weekend, I still won't have any, and I still won't be smoking it.

Decisions, decisions.

rockzilla 02-13-2004 05:01 PM

You could always take a few toots off the first joint, then pass on any others that get sent your way the rest of the night. That's what I would do when I decided I wanted to cut back while my roomies were still smoking 5-6 a night.
Going from smoking daily to three days without is a cause to celebrate, but just a little. Like you said, you don't want to quit completely, and you still won't have anything of your own come Monday, so enjoy yourself.

Take a few tokes, then pass. Get stoned, but not as stoned as you usually get. That way you will have a nice balance of self control, and still can have fun with your buddies.

scrappmittens 02-13-2004 11:59 PM

flamingdog 02-14-2004 03:33 AM
