Refreshing honesty from junk food chain, or malicious hackers?

A junk-food fan was left shocked and upset recently when his order at a Burger King drive-thru was declined on the grounds that he was "too fat".

The man ordered at the speaker but was told by the voice on the other end of the intercom: "You don't need a couple of Whoppers. You are too fat." He was then told to drive on.

While he may at first have assumed it was a member of staff at the Troy, Michigan, Burger King who had grown tired of being in gainful employment, the source of the abuse is actually believed to be a group of malicious pranksters who hacked into the wireless frequency of the drive-thru's intercom service.

Some consumers were told the restaurant had no food or drink, while others were subjected to profanities, according to a report on the Click On Detroit website.

The group are believed to be operating somewhere in the vicinity of the restaurant and have been abusing diners since late last week. Burger King staff are currently trying to change the frequency of the intercom system to avoid further embarrassment.

It appears the authorities do not see the funny side of the prank, however. If caught, the tech-savvy miscreants face up to three months in prison under Michigan's misdemeanour laws.
lol!

Hilarious! I read that the FCC was going to send out some sort of transmission hunting vans. Pssht. I think they're just trying to scare the kids.

Holo 01-22-2004 01:04 PM

I can't wait to see what happens to the first person caught doing this....they're gonna throw the book at them to set an example. All this wireless communication now opens unsecured businesses open to this. It doesn't pay to be unsavvy about tech anymore.

Nisses 01-22-2004 01:06 PM

hey, they were doing him a favor, if only cholesterol-wise :)

Though putting them in jail for 3 months over this, would seem a bit harsh to me

bernadette 01-22-2004 01:17 PM

naughty kids, but it is funny, even if it's mean.

when i was kid (millions of yrs ago), it was the telephone & prank calls. that wasn't right either, but i can recall the hysterical laughter we had from being little naughty booger butts. you know these kids were totally busting a gut. pretty clever prankstering really.

JohnS72 01-22-2004 01:27 PM

It's definately mean, but I would love to do it if I had the chance! Lol I'm sure I'm not the only one :-p

Cynthetiq 01-22-2004 01:45 PM

hack? there's hacking involved? sheesh I just used my CB radio and would bleed all over the speakers even radios that were not on, i'd bleed into almost any speaker.

water_boy1999 01-22-2004 01:51 PM

I could have a ton 'o fun if I knew how to do that. A little mean perhps, but worth the huge laughs.

rider6061 01-22-2004 02:11 PM

they need to give those characters the chair...and Flame Broil them!

hehe

chrisg299 01-22-2004 03:16 PM

hahah that is friggin genius! i love it :-D

The_Dude 01-22-2004 03:28 PM

thats extremely hilarious

genstylez 01-22-2004 03:30 PM

lol, why would you even waste your time with that. I can see prank phone calls being a whole lot funnier.

Vespertine 01-22-2004 04:47 PM

There are so many ways you could have fun with that. ;)

Big props to them for trying it out, even if it was a little harsh.

GakFace 01-22-2004 04:56 PM

"Sorry Sir, we don't serve food here."
>> You're Burger King...
"Yes, and the King said we shall no longer serve others, but only him, so move on before I'm caught talking to you"

That's pretty funny. Calling people fat would be a little out of line, as it'd be a little hard to take it as a joke though.

Plan9Senior 01-22-2004 04:58 PM

Wow, that is comedy. Hopefully the guy ate a salad afterwards :). I just think of all the fun I could have doing that... wow I just realized how immature I am :(

Tempboy 01-22-2004 05:51 PM

Hahah! Well, they're doing people a favor... fast food is bad for you anyway!

No shit. This is no hack. The kid scanned some frequencies or looked it up online.

Funny as hell though.

cj2112 01-22-2004 06:08 PM

I have an RCI Radio that I could do this with, I can scan channels with it and I have picked up the local Carls Jr.

thejoker130 01-22-2004 06:12 PM

 Almost makes me wish that I would have thought of something like that while i still worked at BK.

glytch 01-22-2004 06:14 PM

I saw a small snip of this story on TechTV the other day. It seems like some of the patrons were having fun with the guys. I don't see how anyone would get overly pissed at this, but that's just me.

tommyboy 01-22-2004 06:34 PM

I thought that was hilarious !

Munku 01-22-2004 08:41 PM

That's one of the funniest pranks I've heard in a long while.. almost tops the fake pubes beard prank..

mingusfingers 01-22-2004 09:11 PM

Haha-I like it.

onodrim 01-22-2004 09:21 PM

Prank phone calls are taken to the next level. :) Quite funny indeed.

because everything and anything that is remostly technical is now "hacking"

MichaelFarker 01-22-2004 10:34 PM

Back in the day, hackers made calls for free on public phones. You could do this with a tape recorder. Do you suppose a prank call was made this way occasionally? Demonstrating unintended capabilities of technological devices is hacking (or cracking), especially if you do it as an immature prank.

mr_mcrafe 01-23-2004 01:27 AM

Haha - mean but it might do them good.

Gertie 01-23-2004 01:55 AM

Very funny. It's amazing what people don't know about their cordless phones, either.

aphex140 01-23-2004 01:57 AM

3 months that is harsh.

I agree with Cynthetiq it is not a crime of the century, hell just a bit of fun.

Why do the large co like B.K Macs etc all have a seriourly tight ring piece.

I would love to be at the drive thru to hear and see what goes on, better than T.V

tokaok 01-23-2004 03:01 AM

it looks like some one got there hands on jolly rogers anarchist cook book.

That's very true, and the population of the U.S. is gradually getting more and more obese over time. Serving sizes are just increasing.

But nevertheless, that's a pretty funny story...I dunno what I would have done if I had been the person in the car. I probably would have drove up to the window and beat the shit out of the person that was taking my order!

krwlz 01-23-2004 08:12 AM

Thats fucking hilarious! Props to those kids for trying it out.

Calling him fat is definatly mean though, and I think that was going perhaps just a tad to far.

wannabenakid247 01-23-2004 08:53 AM

Funny as fuck man! You would be well pissed off!

Fremen 01-23-2004 03:21 PM

In what way is this funny?

Vales419 01-23-2004 03:49 PM

That is some funny shit!!!

V.

Litespeed 01-23-2004 03:52 PM

Wow, that's great! Sounds like it would be rather shocking as a customer though.

moonstrucksoul 01-25-2004 09:47 PM

it would be funny until i had my kids in the car with me. then i would be infuriated

absence_of_color 01-25-2004 10:57 PM

Holy shit!! Haha.

I wonder how that happenned....?

PoteMatic 01-26-2004 09:31 AM

Damn that is great. Id laugh if something like that happend to me.

legolas 01-26-2004 11:20 AM
