Mistake by hiking magazine produces a risky route

LONDON (AP) — Britain's biggest-selling hiking magazine apologized Wednesday after its latest issue contained a route that would lead climbers off the edge of a cliff on Britain's tallest peak.
The February edition of Trail magazine gives advice on making a safe descent for hikers caught in bad weather on Ben Nevis in Scotland.

But the magazine's directions would instead lead readers off the north face of the 4,406-foot mountain, which is notorious for its changeable weather and has claimed the lives of several climbers

Maybe they should check the definition of "safe descent" again.

Britain's highest peak?? They have peaks? Anyway, wouldn't you notice that the ground ended?

I'm trying to picture walking up a mountain with your nose so buried in a magazine that you don't notice stepping off into the blue....

Heck, Yahoo Maps tells you to double check your route... I would think that you would do the same with this.

I'm imagining a Harrison Ford scenario from Last Crusade. Two friends up on a peak, one trying to talk the other into taking that "leap of faith". "But bro, the magazine clearly states that we go north!"

I would believe that if you were to climb to the tallest peak that you would double check more than your routes :P Oh well they fucked up. Hopefully it won't cost them too much.

My thoughts exactly. If you're getting your trail information from a magazine, you probably shouldn't be climbing the tallest peak as it is. :)

someone could easily go and get injured on purpose and sue the magazine

They should give this route to the kid who fell 600 meters with his snow mobile. "Survive THIS."

In the US for sure...most other countries..doubtful.
