Getting Drunk 101

Basically, I need some hints and tips on drinking, and what better place is there to ask but TFP?

Let me explain what I need. I'm 26 now, but I've never really been big on alcohol, much to do with the fact that I did not have much of a social life and never got into the habit of drinking alone. Another thing is, I absolutely abhore getting sick, so that limits my options, and experience.

Now, though, married and living in Texas, I find myself being more relaxed around people, socializing more with them friendly Texans, and drinking some on occasion. But the thing is, I've no knowledge as to the do's and do not do's of drinking, and don't really want to find out the hard way.

For example, I recall hearing back in the day that if you drink certain two different sorts of alcohol - such as beer and wine - during the same evening, you'll be sick. But if you drink some other combo - such as wine and brandy - you won't really even get much of a hangover, much less get sick. I've also been told that taking ibuprofen and water before going to sleep drunk prevents a hangover.

The drinking examples I pulled out of my hat, I may have got them all back-ass-wards, and I don't know if the ibuprofen trick works or is even safe. I always thought taking a painkiller when you're drunk was a bad idea, but that's just me.

So is there a combination - or a single type of drink, like beer or cider or wine or whatever - that does not leave you leaning over the pothole and wishing for a quick death? The more I know before another crazy night out with the local rednecks, the less of an ass I'll end making of myself. :)

Spartak 01-21-2004 01:08 AM

Well, I've been told if you are going to be drinking more than one thing on a night drink from lowest alcohol percentage to the highest (for example: beer, wine, vodka). That apparently stops you from getting sick.

And to some extent it works, I guess, but you're better off sticking to one kind of alcoholic beverages on a night (if your goal isn't to get rip roaring drunk, otherwise see below).

What I found really good to get drunk and quickly, is drinking down shots and then chasing them down with a couple of gulps of beer. For example a shot of tequila chased down by some domestic lager.

I'd definately avoid taking any drugs before or during a night on the drink.

aphex140 01-21-2004 04:17 AM

On a big session I will start off with a couple of shandies( larger/ lemonade)largert. THis seem to lull me into it. I have a low caffine diet so this might help as the caffine effect me.

Do not mix is a golden rule.

Drink at least a pint of water before going to bed.

Def no prescription drugs( anti biotics- can drink with but reduces the effectivness of the drugs, and if you are on the damn pills best to let them work ) with alcohol, other well may be, chance you will be ill, eg lots of larger then spliff can cause you to throw up your ring.:D

Nisses 01-21-2004 04:44 AM

be sure to eat something before getting drunk :)

nothing too heavy, or too light, but make sure you're not starting on an empty stomach. That could work against you
(too heavy and you could have a déjà vu of your dinner though, up close :p )

and alot of water before you go to bed is also very important

2 spoons full of olive-oil before you start drinking will also greatly lessen the speed by which you get intoxicated :) but that can backfire on you in nausea or headaches in the morning, depends on the person.

and I believe if you want to mix things, you are best off not mixing fermented alcohol. So don't mix anything brewed.
So you can drink beer and shots normally, but if there's alot of fermentation going on in yer belly, you'll feel like a little brewery of your own all through the night :D

finally: learn to exaggerate
I've have 6 pints already. Oh yeah? Well I had 9 :)

LStanley 01-21-2004 04:46 AM

Beer before liquor,
Never been sicker...

Liquor before beer,
Everything's clear...

just a lil jingle so you DON'T go drinking beer then liquor... lol that gives you the worst damn hangover ever...

and if you wanna learn how to drink right...
Take a trip up to Lubbock... we'll show ya how to drink ;)

:D

but yeah.. the best advice I have is.. drink til you start acting stupid.. then stop.. if you keep drinking... you get sick... and if you just get to the point you are drunk.. you'll build a tolerance and get more ample to drink many diff kinds of liquor a night and out drink your friends.... if thats what you are looking for ;)

high_way 01-21-2004 05:23 AM

i have a couple of rules for when i go out drinking....

1. i always have something very fatty to eat like a big juicy steak with potatoes or maccas or the like... fast food burgers are good.

2. i usually start out with a few beers then go to bourban, not the other way round (for me anyway) but i usually end up drinking both beer and bourban in the same night, sometimes one after the other.

3. never finish on a beer... the worst thing coming up is beer by far.

4. if you have had a lot do drink do NOT and i repeat NOT get anything to eat. i just seems to make me worse.

5. drink plenty of water when u go to bed and when u wake up. if you are throwing your guts up try and drink water, even if you cant hold it down. nothing worse then dry reaching all morning/day and even worse when u start to bring up your stomach acid

6. when you can stomach food, make sure it is really fatty. the fat soaks up any alcohol in your system and makes you feel 100% better

all that said good luck and have a drink for me

ps i usually only drink beer and bourbon (my preference) so that is what i work on

pps if you dont want to get too drunk too quick, avoid shots. you drink a couple and you dont think you are drunk so you have a few more and after a little while it hits you.

ppps if you do have shots and u have black samboka ask them to light it up in your mouth (sounds a bit freaky but it is fucken cool when you do it) just make sure you close your mouth before you try to swallow, and dont worry you wont burn yourself, the oxygen in your mouth burns too quickly.

have fun

yakimushi 01-21-2004 06:57 AM

All I can really tell you is to not eat Taco Bell for dinner, then have about 6-8 shots of Wild Turkey mixed with Diet Mt. Dew in under an hour.

You WILL get sick :D

troit 01-21-2004 07:13 AM

A couple of suggestions coming from someone who enjoys a couple of cocktails every night.

First of all -- you do want to make sure you do not drink on an empty stomach. Not only with this greatly reduce the amount of alcohol that you can partake in but usually will lead to a night filled with hugging of the toilet.

Like all good things I suggest you start slow. Drink beer. After you have learned the how, what, and why about yourself and drinking you can then progress slowly to harder liabations.

My last bit of advise -- drink a lot of water before you hit the hay after a night of drinking. One of the reasons people get hung over is because alcohol is a deuretic and therefore the body loses a lot of water. Drink at least a quart before bed and continue to drink a few glasses the morning after.

Hope these help you out.

krwlz 01-21-2004 07:21 AM

There is no tried and true secrets personaly. Then again, when I drink, more often then not it starts with two doubles of jager, followed by a 60/40 mix of rum and coke.

Gets better from there.

Whatever you do though, do not get drunk and then decide you want to smoke a bowl...

Fun ride, bad times.

strcrssd 01-21-2004 08:09 AM

As far as the mixing of drinks, I personally don't see any scientific reasons why not to. Also, the messages above seem to conflict.

Scientifically, you want to drink a good bit of water. Alcohol (like caffine) is a dieuretic, it robs the body of water. This leads to hangovers.

Cynthetiq 01-21-2004 08:17 AM

everyone here seems to be giving advice on the fact of drinking to wasted. Keep those caveats in mind, but just have a beverage of your choosing whatever your tastes may be, if they are sweet drinks, strong drinks, coffee drinks, slushie drinks, to straight up drinks.

Drink responsibly.

LStanley 01-21-2004 10:40 AM

its been prooven.. NO FOOD WHATSOEVER will make you get less drunk.. EVER.... the ONLY thing food MIGHT do... is help keep you from getting as nausious...

Water however, CAN and WILL Dilute your bloodstream, help avoid hangovers from dehydration, and weakens the effects of alcholol... you will STILL however get as drunk as you always will...

There are a FEW things you CAN eat that will stop your body from processing liquor in your stomach, charcoal for one... if anyone dares eat charcoal.. it chemically BONDS and absorbs the alcholol... bread and things.. they absorb it... but its STILL there and STILL digestable.. same goes with fat...

therefore fatty foods... however they DO go good with beer... they will not help you handle drinking it..

;) there are LOTS of myths about alcholol.. and lots of truths.. get a book or read up online somewhere... don't trust every advice given to you...

It's been said, but the key I think is drinking a LOT of water before going to bed. I always force myself to drink 2 full glasses. And I mean it, force yourself to. It stops the hangovers.

Plan9Senior 01-21-2004 12:01 PM

Nothing wrong with going out drinking alone. I love to travel solo and I usually meet a lot more people that way then if I was to have come in a big group.

No, nothing wrong with that, true...but drinking alone in your apartment is what I meant, and generally I don't consider that healthy.

I've seen a hospital administer charcoal to someone with an unknown amount of no-one-knew-what in her, administered by an unknown jerk. Straightened her out pretty damn quick.

I don't know where to get the stuff the hospital used, though.

(edit) Okay, after a very brief Google search on "+medical +charcoal", I found Somerset Medical, which points at a number of products. I wonder if it'd be a good idea to have these things around, just in case.

VitaminH 01-21-2004 02:47 PM

Hospitals use activated charcol, which is charcol ground up in a certain manner so there is lots of surface area and small holes for it to literally soak up things. It's used whenever anyone has ingested something potentially toxic, or ot much of something that could be toxic. IT IS NOT a good idea to eat a charcol briquette from the grill when you get home to fight a hangover. They are not pure, nor sterile and some have additives in them like lighter fluid that you obviously don't want to eat.

moonstrucksoul 01-22-2004 01:30 PM

if you don't really like alchohol then why drink at all. i like a little buzz from alchohol, but i prefer to do all my heavy buzzing from the herb.

Ok ... interesting threads, now let the Professor of Drinkology speak.

As a recent college graduate from one Georgia's top party schools and a member of the fraternity circuit, I was among the elite of my craft (drinking, for those that haven't been paying attention). I'm of Irish and Scottish decent with a Catholic background, and some might say, I'm sure, that I was born with BAC. Having established my credibility, let me begin dispensing alcoholic advise.

1) Alcohol is alcohol no matter what form it takes.
2) Beware of the proofs (percentage alcohol by volume)
3) Know your limits.
4) Never drink around frat boys -- ever. (especially if you are female)
5) Drunken Krystal's (aka., White Castle) runs are fun at 12am.
6) Waffle House is never a good idea. Eggs are bad coming back up.
7) Leave your car keys at home or turn them over to someone on your first drink.
8) Never drive after drinking underage.
9) Never be the only drunk guy -- watch and listen to the crowd.
10) If everyone seems to be talking quietly, you're drunk.
11) Its colder outside then you think. Wear a jacket.
12) Never let someone else make you a drink, unless you can watch them do it. (especially if you are a female)
13) Never let your liquor bottles be out of your line of sight -- beer is better for taking to parties b/c its sealed individually.
14) Mixing non-carbonated alcohol is OK.
15) Mixing carbonated alcohol is OK only in very specific situations. (eg., flaming Dr. Pepper)
16) Mixing alcohol with carbonated beverages is OK, but be careful. Pressure in the stomach is a bad thing if you've be drinking heavily.
17) Get a mixed liquor drink at the bar -- drink beer at home -- you'll go home with more money. Unless you're on your way home or don't plan on staying long.
18) Shots at bars are expensive. Only do shots on special occassions or when with several buddies (aka, special occassions).
19) Cheap liquors (Mr. Boston, El Toro, etc) and the drinks made from them seems to give worse hangovers.
20) Watch out for developing a taste for expensive liquors, you'll have trouble going back.
21) Eat beforehand, only because its hard to get a ride to Burger King at 10pm.
22) Buy ice beforehand, because its hard to get a ride to Kroger at 10pm.
23) Always have a designated driver handy -- even if you've only had a little. Better safe than sorry.
24) Serve the ladies first if they're present.
25) Ladies tend to like sweet drinks with wierd names (Tequila Sunrise, Miami Crush, Medori Sours, Fuzzy Navels) Stereotypical, yes, but in my experience is damn near 100% accurate. Never had a female ask for a bourbon and coke...
26) If you are male, never let another male buy you a drink, unless it's to pay off a bet or debt.
27) If you are female, graciously accept when another person buys/makes you a drink. Ditch it later if it sucks, but not if the bartender can see you do it.
28) When a buddy tells you to stop, stop. No matter what he's telling to you stop doing (yes, that means "stop balancing the keg on your face.")
29) If your lady wants to go home, go home. Chances are, she's "soberer" then you and knows more at that point.

and finally, the most important rule of all...

31) Be responsible.

Almost goes without saying, but never try to feed something into an unconscious person. They might choke or drown. Let the professionals take care of the unconscious person.

Otherwise, be ready for that activated charcoal to come right back up. In fact, the only situation where you would need this would be if you were dying, in which case *go to the hospital* and stopping monkeying around with charcoal in your house.

denim 01-22-2004 08:44 PM

Yeah, looked for a charcoal product at the pharmacy today, and didn't find one. I figure that's a sign I'm not supposed to buy any.

As far as drinking goes, effects do vary from person to person, and experience is the best teacher. Try to have fun with it, and don't turn it into a bureaucratic, rule driven process.

orange monkeyee 01-22-2004 09:39 PM

added food in the stomach doesn't take away the alcohol, it absorbs into the stomach walls quite fast, so a bunch of food won't sober you up, nor will anything, just a matter of how your metabolism is, and if your a 320 pound person like me, if you want to get trashed, get a .7 liter bottle of Jager and finish it within 2 hours.

MichaelFarker 01-22-2004 11:15 PM

Drink lots of water.
Don't make any major decisions when inebriated.
Be patient with people, especially those who feel like a part of you.
Pause between alcoholic drinks to have some water.
When you slow down your consumption of alcohol, you'll get tired.
Drinking while in chlorinated water multiplies your inebriation and hangover.
Just because someone else likes a particular drink doesn't mean you will.
Drinking water can prevent having a headache the next day.
Carbonation makes you more inebriated. It can make you more hung over.
Watch out for the munchies.
Oh yeah ... water, H2O, agua, rehydrate.

We're just having fun making up rules. I was laughing my ass off as I was writing that that list thinking of all the times that either myself or some of my friends did some of that stuff. We were all the time going to Krystals with drunk people, and someone would always vomit at Waffle House. Just fun thoughts, not bureaucractic intentions....

some thoughts from my 20 years of drinking experience:

mixing alcohol forms is generally a bad idea. as noted above, stick to one thing all night. the exception, of course, is the shot. these should be kept to a minimum, however.

re: mixing. whatever you do, do NOT drink 6 or 8 beers, then have 3 strawberry daquiris, followed by several glasses of cheap wine. unless, of course, you like puking your guts up and having bedspins all night.

tips for avoiding hangovers:

liberal amounts of water should be consumed during and after the drinking session, particularly prior to going to sleep.

a couple of aspirin, tylenols (acetominaphen) or advils (ibuprofen) prior to sleep can help reduce the effects of a hangover.

dehydration is the primary cause of a hangover. to lessen the dehydrating effect of alcohol, avoid sweet drinks and carbonated mix beverages. and as mentioned previously and by many respondents in this thread - drink H2O.

never order a drink if you dont know what its made with and how much booze is in it. some drinks are designed to give the average person a huge buzz after just one (ie a Hurricane, Octane 180, etc).

always remember when consuming mixed drinks that, even though you might not be able to taste the alcohol, it IS still in there. dont get in a hurry.

do not get another drink just because the previous one is empty. regulate your alcohol intake based on your buzz, not your thirst. if you are thirsty but not ready for another drink, have some water.

my personal timetable for a night of drinking.

first hour: 3 drinks, to get the buzz going.
second hour: 2 drinks, the get the buzz stabilized at the proper level
rest of the night: 1 drink every 45-60 minutes, to maintain buzz

again, hydration is the key to drinking. anything that increases or intensifies the dehydration process is to be avoided. if it can not be avoided, combat with extra water consumption. examples: drinking outside on a hot day, heavily carbonated mixes (ie rum and coke), excessively sweet drinks (ie daquiris), salty bar foods (peanuts, popcorn, pretzels).

good luck and have fun.

and NEVER, EVER drive if you've consumed more than 2 drinks.

floydthebarber 01-23-2004 01:48 PM

I never drink just to get drunk, I drink to have fun and enjoy my friends company. Drinking just to get drunk seems to me like a result of prohibiting alcohol until 19 (or 21 in some countries). A well-rounded upbringing in regards to alcohol eliminates the desire to drink for the sole purpose of getting drunk.
All this is just MHO.

KungFuGuy 01-23-2004 08:15 PM

medical charcoal is what they use when people get their stomachs pumped.

Its used for overdoses and toxins. Unless its a really serious situation doctors almost always recomend some other form of detox like induced vomiting or drinking lots of water.

I would definately advise against someone ingesting charcoal simply to avoid a hangover.

and if ur going to drink a lot of water before going to sleep try to keep your buddies from putting your left (?) hand in a bowl of warm water while you sleep. =)

indiretto 01-29-2004 11:29 AM

Let your drinking friends know that you have a low tolerance and don't drink much, if they are good friends they will appreciate the fact that you are coming and drinking with them anyway and won't push you, then just take it easy. If you are not sure if that last one hit you wait 5-10 minuets then if you feel fine go ahead and have another. I’m a light weight and it usually takes 2-4 beers before I start feeling it even a little. In my state you can have 1 beer and still be under the legal driving limits. That isn’t to say go ahead and drive (I don’t recommend it), it’s just to put things in perspective.

The lots of water and two ibuprofen thing has worked for me so far.

Welcome to Texas. These guys all gave you plenty of tips.

My suggestion, try Shiner Bock. I'm a Texan myself (Austin), Shiner is a Texas-only beer, and is definately my favorite beer. It's known everywhere here, and when people come to visit after one try they load up their car with cases to take back home with them.

ShaniFaye 02-02-2004 09:51 AM

my hangover preventer...2 goody powders and a glass of tang....it never EVER fails me, no matter how much I drink

I also try to eat 3 slices of white buttered bread before I start drinking...does nothing for a hangover but I dont puke when I've been heavily drinking

I absolutely cannot combine liquor and beer, if I dont its a recipe for disaster
