Most people who get pulled over just get pissed off

FROSTBURG, MD JANUARY 15- Allegany County authorities continue to investigate a bizarre incident that occurred during a traffic stop Wednesday near Frostburg. Moments after state police pulled a man over for a seatbelt violation, the driver pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head as a trooper approached the car.

We have heard about it so many times in cities all across the nation... a routine traffic stop ends in tragedy. On Wednesday Allegany County proved to be no exception. Maryland State Trooper Reese Llewellyn made what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop on Hoffman Hollow Road in Frostburg. After exiting his patrol car, Llewellyn witnessed the man he stopped pull out a handgun and shoot himself in the head.

Jim Pyles of the Maryland State Police said, "no longer can we refer to a traffic stop as a routine traffic stop. It's an unknown traffic stop or it's a high-risk traffic stop. Yesterday was a prime example. I'm sure the trooper, being a 5-year veteran in the Maryland State Police never thought in 25 years that anything like this would have happened."

After seeing the man slump over in his truck Llewellyn called for emergency medical assistance and then approached the truck with an emergency care unit. He was later taken to Memorial Hospital where his condition has not been released. However, one fact remains: A new understanding between law enforcement officials and commuters needs to grow.

Pyles explained, "best advice I can give is pull to a safe area, hands on the steering wheel, 10 and 2. If we can see your hands then we know we're not going to get hurt. We want to see your hands. If it's nighttime hours flick your dome light on so we can see what's going on in the vehicle."

Investigators say they still don't know why the man tried to kill himself.

omega2K4 01-16-2004 09:55 PM

Hell, I don't blame the guy for killing himself. Have you seen how high some of those tickets are?

ChrisJericho 01-16-2004 09:58 PM

If I get pulled over I'm sure as hell not putting the dome lights on, god knows what a popo might see that's "illegal".

legolas 01-16-2004 10:03 PM

I wouldn't put on a dome light on either. The hands on the wheel makes sense, but the dome light is a bit much.

amonkie 01-16-2004 10:05 PM

I know I was scared shitless when I got pulled over for my ticket. The cop had been riding in my blind spot and I didn't see her when I switched lanes, next thing I know I've got the lights on behind me. The whole "Do you know why I pulled you over?" crap was a little hard to answer... that was not a fun morning.

anleja 01-16-2004 10:43 PM

When I get pulled over, I start shaking like I just saw the face of God, and the face of God is the cop.

Cops like like it when you do that. I haven't received a ticket in a long time. Only warnings.

Mr.Deflok 01-17-2004 04:01 AM

Shit, that's comedy. "You'll never take me alive!!!", maybe he had a dead body in the trunk?

Harshaw 01-17-2004 07:58 AM

First (and only) ticket I ever got was in Washington. First thing out of the cops mouth "Ok, where's the fire?".
I don't normally go in for stereotypes, but that was kind of funny.

moonstrucksoul 01-17-2004 12:29 PM

WOW, i am sure that guy had a lot more going on in his life than worrying about another traffic ticket.

rat 01-17-2004 03:52 PM

well, someone could make an honest case for the traffic violation being fatal, if they're sick and twisted enough. it's a bizarre twist on "disobeying the law costs people their lives" but some of us are twisted ;)

World's King 01-17-2004 03:59 PM

I've shot myself in the head many times to get out of traffic tickets.

Why is this so strange?

onodrim 01-17-2004 03:59 PM

I've never been pulled over, so I've never experienced the sheer terror that would cause someone to shot themselves. :p Seriously though, obviously that guy had other issues at the time. I feel bad for the cop who had to see it happen.

That's so funny, yet so wrong.

Seriouly though, cops need to realize how most people perceive them. You get someone who's seriously emotionally disturbed or suicidal and it's not hard to think of the pullover as the straw the broke the camels back.

santafe5000 01-17-2004 05:26 PM

Maybe it will came out later that he was a wanted man and didn't want to go to jail. He knew the officer would run a check on his licence and find out.
In this day and age, people do some strange shit. Or maybe he wanted to file a police brutality case to win a lot of money???

I put on the dome light, roll down the tinted windows, make sure they can see my hands....I actually get -alot- of warnings. He has a gun and he's nervous. I no longer see the point in "what was I doing wrong officer...?" I speed. Not crazy speed, but still....

Cops are more scared than you are. A "routine" traffic stop and obviously the driver had a gun....

Nevertheless, it's not worth shooting yourself over.

exponent_doobie 01-17-2004 09:46 PM

Was he stoned or something? Maybe he thought the cop-lights were an alien spaceship with an anal probe.

Hell I'd shoot myself before letting them put that cold bar up my arse!

mrbuck12000 01-17-2004 10:03 PM

why do innocent people get so upset about a traffic violation? If they know that is all they did....its not that bad. Its when you have more to hide that then it gets weird. I think shooting themselves is taking it to the extreme though.

I had never been pulled over before, in my 2 years of driving (Ooh, lots of experience, yeah) experience. Until last saturday night.

I was coming home from a wedding at 3am on the highway. I was in a super-snazzy pinstripe suit, listening to some GY!BE, drinking some slurpee, when I go to make a left turn out of the turn lane and I see the blue lights.

Oh shit. What did I do? Was I speeding? Fuck me. I'm dead. I'm so dead. I don't know what I did.

Heart was pounding. Rolled down the window.

"Hey man, you were all over the road. You okay?"

"I was?.... Yeah I'm fine"

"You ain't been drinkin?"

"No. Well, this slurp...... No."

"Haha...okay man. You got far to go? Maybe you're tired. It's three in the morning"

"I know what time it is...nah I live right down here. Coming from a wedding."

"Okay man, be safe alright?"

"uh...you too"

It was definitely not what I expected.

Tiger69z 01-17-2004 11:45 PM

Haha, maybe the copper was bored.

I think that the man who shot himself just had a bad day. Tickets are actually one of the more stressful things in life, and maybe that guy jus got fired and dumped and jus decided to say, oh fugg it, life is against me so i'll end it. :(

Sux for him...and the cop

gilada 01-18-2004 08:43 AM

I got pulled over for speeding recently. Had a nice conversation with the state trooper. My ticket is due this Saturday, but so far, they haven't turnded it in. If it doesn't show, it will get dismissed automatically. I'm hoping he 'lost' it.

mingusfingers 01-18-2004 02:23 PM

Dome light, pah. Never gonna do that.

indiretto 01-29-2004 12:01 PM

I agree with "ChrisJericho" and "mingusfingers" they can see enough with those damn flood lights they use. As for the man there was obviously more involved than just being pulled over.

bonehed1 01-29-2004 02:20 PM

I got pulled over for my break lights not activating. The cop was hella cool and actually said "Im not joshing you. They didnt come on." So I did the normal push in the break pedal and wham...they come on...he just said check it out and have a nice night. That is the only time I was pulled over and it was funny as hell.
