I think something to also think about is how the meat is handled from the time it leaves the slaughterhouse, til it makes it to your supermarket shelf. That's where a lot of shall we say, undesired things can happen. Like meats being exposed to warm temperatures, cross-contaminated by other foods and non-food substances, and being re-labeled and restocked by the grocer after they're outdated. I live in an area with a lot of dairy farms, and know quite a few farmers. While "love" isn't quite the word, those farmers are very devoted to the health and welfare of their animals. It's based on natural respect, as well as the financial reality that a happy cow is one that produces well.
It's all the unknowns in meat supply and processing that make me prefer to eat what I've killed and processed myself, or something that's been raised and handled locally. |

Lebell said it well I think. There will always be instances where men are cruel to animals but I don't believe it's nearly as bad as all they say.
I am aware of the genetically engineered chickens that grow so quickly that their weight actually breaks their legs and they cannot reach their food. One of my friends when growing up bought those kind of chickens to raise one year for 4-H they weren't aware of the tendency for these birds to actually outgrow their own bone strength until their legs broke and they couldn't get out of their nest in the morning. My friend didn't show them in 4-H because they had to kill them. As for De-Horning the cows. It doesn't matter if the cattle on living in close quarters or not it is a necessity. It's not usually done in the manner shown. I have actually helped with the process to de-horn. Yes it hurts the cows but only for a short time and it prevents them from seriously hurting each other when out in the field. Every farmer I knows in concientous about caring for the animals that they own even when they are intended for slaughter. The milking machines do not harm the animals and are not painful. I've felt the suction and put the machines on. The cows don't even seem to notice usually. There is so much in this that is exaggerated it's not funny. I'm a meat eater and will always be one. I have participated in the slaughter of cows, chickens, sheep, and deer. It's a part of life. When it has been done it's been done with respect and quickly. We use all we can from the creature so that as little as possible goes to waste. BTW a vegetarian can get all the nutrician they need without eating any animal products at all. I have known several people who did so and were healthier than I was. You have to be careful and you have to know what vitamins and minerals are in your food. It's possible though.

I tend to heavily dissagree with peta, more so now than ever as I am now a diabetic- Due to trauma from major surgery I have type II early onset- in short in less than a year my whole life has changed- I am now aware that I am likely to live about 5-20 years less, have more health problems, and generaly be fucked for the rest of my life- my whole diet has changed- nutra sweet tastes like shit, and splenda, while better, is not sugar- bread is now largely forbidden, as is rice, wheat, pretty much anything with carbs- but wait, so is most meat, as cholesterol is a great danger- even with drugs, careful monitoring and excersise, I can look forward to blindness, heart attacks, loosing feeling in my extremeties, impotence, and a host of other shit- all from a disease that is "controllable"- to me, the only suitable controll is A CURE, untill that happens, I, and millions of americans like me, am fucked royaly- and PETA says that we should not experiment to find that cure- FUCK THAT- While I believe in humane treatment, I would gladly see a million monkeys die instead of the millions of humans that WILL DIE OF DIABETES THIS YEAR
