Do you smoke?

I am sure this has been done before. But I really am curious...it seems that less people start smoking these days than, say, 20 years ago. And more people are quitting. Where do you stand on smoking?

Personally, I hate it. I do love the smell of tobacco -- before it is inhaled, that is. Exhaled tobacco smoke just smells nasty, and I hate the smell that sticks to one's clothes. I try to avoid people who smoke, mostly because even the smell of cigarette smoke can easily cause me to have a migraine.

rogue49 01-03-2004 04:38 PM

I'm allergic to tobacco.

Thank god alcohol cancels out my allergy, so I can hang at bars.

madp 01-03-2004 04:45 PM

Smoked as a kid, quit 10 years ago.

wait. . . . we're talking about tobacco, right?

Nachtschleicher 01-03-2004 04:49 PM

I've never smoked. I've dipped a few times though. Tried Redman, Copeahagen, and Skoal. I hated it! But of the three, I liked Redman the best. Gritty, but kind of sweet tasting too.

forseti-6 01-03-2004 04:54 PM

I tried it once in college, but didn't see what was so great about it. It also is so expensive, and with me being poor, I'm glad I don't smoke.

nirol 01-03-2004 05:04 PM

I don't, but.....
Please try it everyone, and try to smoke at least a pack and a half a day. We need the revenue here in NC, I dont want to pay your social security, and it keeps other taxes down. I know it is nasty and ruins uphostelry and clothes, but I am willing to sacrifice.

juanvaldes 01-03-2004 05:27 PM

Quit four years ago last week :D

There is nothing in this world you can not overcome by pure will power and weed. ;)

brandon11983 01-03-2004 05:35 PM

I tried it in my stupid teenage days. Mostly because I play a lot of pool, and it was just something do to between shots. I realized how stupid that was and haven't so much as touched one since.

SSJTWIZTA 01-03-2004 05:39 PM

I'm starting to quit. Everytime I get a craving for tobacco I just smoke a bowl of marijuana and the craving subsides. Havnt had a cigarette in almost 2 weeks now.

Snoogans 01-03-2004 06:12 PM

I took my last smoke on the 1st Januari this year, now I'm back to snuff. Much more healthier.

spived2 01-03-2004 06:13 PM

centie, it's not so much the post that offends me so much as the ignorance behind it. I started heavily smoking when I joined the Army because it was the only time I was allowed out of the motorpool just to take a break. The addiction came on and I ended up smoking about a pack a day afterwards. It was basically just an excuse to get away, but after you've been smoking awhile, your body craves the nicotine in the cigarettes.

It may sound easy for a non-smoker to say how stupid it is to smoke and how anyone can quit whenever they want, but you have to remember it's easier for some to just buy another pack of smokes and not have to have the cravings then it is to just straight up quit. That's why people continue to smoke even when they know it's bad for them.

I did end up quitting, but that was only after it started affecting my run times. I had to do it for myself and my job, so I did. It was hard, but now I'm good.

Sorry for rambling, just giving MY opinion.

tritium 01-03-2004 07:21 PM

Man, there was nothing better than a cig when I was feeling depressed. I still think that they're good for anxiety and depression, but don't use them anymore.

tritium 01-03-2004 07:24 PM

centie, if you understood why some people like me used to smoke then you probably wouldn't say what you did.

Find out the psychology behind it and understand the addiction instead of spouting off what ever other authority figure has been teaching you to say.

splck 01-03-2004 07:47 PM

Never have, never will.

Amen brother.

bernadette 01-03-2004 08:42 PM

been smoking since oct. 1989.
today is actually my first day of quitting.

so, i'm not sure what to check in the poll... doesn't seem quite long enough yet to flat out declare that i have indeed quit..... although i really hope to make it this time.

Fire 01-03-2004 08:45 PM

I smoke cigars, but not that much- ie not every day, sometimes several days between ... I quit every now and then for a week or so to see how much / if I am craving- I also smoke a pipe when I work a ren faire or outdoor event. - I don's inhale anything into my lungs, but still accept that smoking increases my chance of shitty health complications- I try to keep it in balance, and for pleasure- when I feel the "need" to smoke, I don't- nor do I when stressed- If I ever feel that I have a genuine need for regular nicoteen, then I will quit- not beacause of the health concerns, but because I am a controll freak that will not "need " any drug of any type....

Fremen 01-03-2004 08:55 PM

I quit about 12 years ago.
I still get a craving to smoke cigarettes occasionally, but I find I can't stand the smell anymore.
I could smell good pipe-tobacco smoke all day long, though.

burnhm 01-03-2004 08:56 PM

Not the hugest fan of smoking, lots of my family have died from lung cancer. ;So that's that.

floydthebarber 01-03-2004 09:28 PM

bleh, no way man, I like my body too much for that.

Destrox 01-03-2004 09:48 PM

Grew up with my father having a genetical form of lung cancer, and knowing that smoking can give the 100% same thing is about as smart of a reason why noone should smoke.

Theres better things to do then to take a chance and get lung cancer. It was some of the most disturbing years of my life to witness a once extreemly well fit man unable to go up 5 stairs and be out of breath, coughing up chunks of his lungs literally, and many many worse things.

And shame to any of you that dare to ask for a lung replacement if you smoke, there are many more in need of them parts that dont smoke. (If they even let that happen.)

Quit before its to late and you possibly get this deathly sickening frightening disease.

I voted no if you cant tell.

tritium 01-03-2004 10:47 PM

Amen to quitting. That means no pot too. Pot is equally crappy for your lungs. Never done pot, myself. I heard somewhere that smoking a joint is like 12 packs of cigarettes or something...

I don't hate the smell of active smoking though. The after-smell sucks though.

Snakebyt 01-03-2004 10:52 PM

been smoking for almost 18 years now.. and no end in sight.. i wish i wouldnt have started, but i was young and stupid

ForgottenKnight 01-03-2004 10:54 PM

I don't smoke, never have, and don't want to ever start.

present_future 01-03-2004 10:58 PM

Never have and never will. I've seen what it can do to you. My grandpa suffered a stroke because of his pack-a-day habit that he had done for over 30 years. He quit cold turkey after that. In my book, that's a hero.

herostar 01-03-2004 11:40 PM

Never smoked and never will. I enjoy an occasional cigar, but cigarrettes are utterly disgusting.

Captain Canada 01-04-2004 12:10 AM

Yeah, I smoke. I started like a year ago. Then I quit. When I got to college though and met my now girlfriend, I started again.

Nachtschleicher 01-04-2004 12:16 AM

Oh yeah! I forgot about Cigars... Thanks for reminding me Herostar... yeah I did smoke a Cuban cigar once... pretty damn good! Gave me frequent bowel movements, but yeah...

I have smoked before... and it was once with a Cuban cigar. It was legal too.

split lickety 01-04-2004 12:37 AM

i smoked for 6 years and quit 7 years ago. now i hate the smell of tobacco. loathe it actually, but as my grandaddy always said there's nobody pruder than a reformed whore.

punx1325 01-04-2004 12:43 AM

Tried it hated it, I'll stick to alcohol...

goddfather40 01-04-2004 01:47 AM

I have been smoking off and on for the last 3 years or so, averaging about a pack every two weeks or so, not that much compared to 'full-time' smokers. I have decided to quit completely (new year's resolution), and being that I don't smoke that much in the first place, it shouldn't be hard. It is a social thing and I have no excuse to defend why I do it, that's why I'm stopping.

Gertie 01-04-2004 01:59 AM

I've always hated cigarettes. Acrid, foul things. Now cigars, that's another story. A well blended, well constructed hand rolled cigar can be a special treat. May I recommend a Torano Reserve Selecta Maduro torpedo? Ask your local tobacconist for one of those, snip off the pointed end, light the other end, and prepare to discover how delicious and aromatic tobacco can be when properly prepared.

m0ntyblack 01-04-2004 07:04 AM

I just quit 2 weeks ago, cold turkey.

sailor 01-04-2004 08:52 AM

I occasionally smoke cigars or pipes, but even those are pretty rare. I dont really like the taste of tobacco, but I will smoke them if the occasion is right.

EruptiveDreamz 01-04-2004 09:22 AM

Isn't that the reason for the price increases on tobacco so less people will want to start smoking because of the cost? Yes I do smoke and I think about the money I could save if I was to quit. But at this point I don't want to quit. I guess it gives me something to complain about when it comes to my fincial situation huh? Oh poor pitiful me .. damn it now this thread makes me feel quilty. I am going to be thinking all day long milk or cigs.

Chilly McFreeze 01-04-2004 09:46 AM

I don't but my girlfriend does, and I'd really rather she didn't, but her working in a pub means the chances of her stopping anytime soon are pretty slim!

santafe5000 01-04-2004 09:58 AM

I smoked for 35 years. Was 3 pack a day when i quit 5 yrs ago.
I really feel so much better now and can smell and taste so much better.

denim 01-04-2004 10:13 AM

I tried it when I was 10, several times. Realized it was clearly an acquired taste, and decided not to acquire it. One of my few good decisions as a kid, this was.
