Quote of the Day - Sir! You're drunk!

I've decided that there's an opportunity for me to post interesting, thoughful and amusing quotes to this board.

Oft times I find myself wanting to share something that is not long enough to justifiy a "Passage of the Day", so I hereby constitute a "Quote of the Day" series.

Feel free to comment, contribute, castigate or criticise...

Quote:

Sir Winston Churchill, on replying to Lady's Astors comment "Sir, you're drunk!"

I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.

It should be noted that there are several versions of the above quote available, but this seemed to me to be the most amusing.

Sir Winston Churchill; truly a giant amongst men.

:-)

blizzak 12-20-2003 11:27 PM

heh I have a book called "The Wit of Sir Winston"
always a good read

Upon searching I found this quote with the following said afterward--
Lady Astor: Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your drink!
Churchill: Madam, if you were my wife, I would drink it.

Mark Twain and Winston Churchill would have been awesome internet trolls, they're way ahead of their time in terms of humor.

Doh! There goes one of my other planned quotes...

Thankfully, between Churchill, Twain, Wilde and Johnson I still have a few up my sleeve.

Oscar Wilde: "A true friend stabs you in the front."

Classic.

Whoever said that Brits can't be funny?

Mephisto2 12-22-2003 03:45 PM

I personally think British humour is streets ahead of American.

But then again, that's just my opinion...

I think we dont find it quite as hilarious as they do, becasue britian is a very ordered society. And therefore they find mass amounts of disorder funny.

We, as a people, are the epitome of chaos.

I think what Phaenx said should be a quote of the day somewhere down the road.

Man that Lady Astor sounds like a real biatch

In my work place I am the union rep and my general manager once told me, I had made a classic quote when remarking about the management styles of one of his front line managers. I said, "The man has the tact of Attila the Hun with the man management skills of penguin"
Apparently that is now legendary around the site I work at, mainly because it's true

Halx 12-23-2003 05:49 PM

bluearmy, that may be creative, but the penguin reference doesn't tie in well enough with attila the hun. While being familiar with the guy may help, I think you could work on it a little more, make it more pun-ish.

Here's one I like:

Gen. Colin Powell

"We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years and we’ve done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own... to seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace. But there comes a time when soft power or talking with evil will not work where, unfortunately, hard power is the only thing that works."
