Musical Instraments
Tell us what kind of musical instraments have you learned? What do enjoy playing the most? Have you tried any unusual ones?
For those of you who haven't played an instrament - what is you favorite to listen to? I have played the piano since I was 12. My grandmother taught me and I always think of her when I play. I took lessons for flute, and violin but quit both because I loved piano most and the time I spent practicing the other instraments meant that I didn't get to spend any time on my piano. I did get to try a number of other instraments, french horn, guitar, clarinet, accordian, and the saw. The saw was the most interesting and actually very easy. I was terrible at the horn and clarinet. I have always enjoyed music and mostly enjoy listening to string instraments of almost any sort. I'm not a picky music listener though.

I played the flute in high school, and I sing, and I can plunk out a tune on the piano if necessary.

I played alto and tenor saxophone for awhile in high school. I have also taken guitar and oboe, but those never went any where. It was fun while it lasted, but I never had any real talent, so I was just as happy to give it up. I haven't played in over 20 years.

Started the Alto Saxophone in 4th grade, and played a little tenor and baritone sax as well (pretty much the same when it comes down to how to play them). In high school I switched to the bassoon and played that all 4 years in the band and orchestra and played Alto Sax in the marching band (it was required

I started playing percussion in fifth grade. I dont play it as part of an ensemble anymore, which I regret. I do still play a kit occasionally, though.
I learned to play guitar in 8th grade. Still play it today, 5, almost 6 years later. A guitar fits a little better in a dorm room than a drumset ![]()

I played trumpet from 4th grade to 9th grade, and french horn from 7th to 9th. I loved playing both back then, but my fondest memory of playing any instrument would be in jazz band when I started to learn the art of the jazz solo. Makes me wish I had kept it up...

Throughout school, and even now, I am a geek.. but I enjoy being a band geek when I can. I've played (in chronological order): flute, piccolo, barri sax, alto sax, tenor sax, bass clarinet, oboe, drums/perc, clarinet, trumpet, french horn, and the mellophone. I have to say the trumpet is my real instrument... I enjoy being the best when I have practiced.. which I have not recently.
It's sad that I've gotten out of touch with band since I was in HS, I have taken a band class in college but have not gotten back into marching band. Marching band was always and will always be a blast. Though the university I'm going to next semester doesn't have a marching band.. I may just have to find one in Richmond that does. We'll see. But I'm a big band/music geek at heart.

My main instrument is piano (16 years) and then guitar (acoustic rhythm, about 4 years, self-taught). In elementary school, I played the sax, then switched to the clarinet. I wasn't good enough to get into the band on either of those, but filled in on piano when it was needed and joined the jazz band in high school.
I have a million instruments I want to learn. Up at the top of the list is harmonica and mandolin. I would also like to learn the vibes (so I can combine piano and my love of percussion) and the accordion.

Started off by learning guitar.
Self taught and also by my mate who started a year before me. Then moved onto bass when we needed one in the band. Had to give it up because i never had the time to play anymore when i left university. Aint life a bitch. I occasionally get to play on my bro's. But all in all i miss it.

Piano from second grade to ninth grade...I can still bang out some notes, but I wouldn't say I "play".
I played flute in band from fifth grade to freshman year, when I switched to French horn/mellophone. I wasn't great at any of them, but I do love the sound of a French horn. I have a guitar. Do I play? Not really...a regret that I've never learned any more.

Played baritone horn from 6th to 9th grade. It was a good experience, but one I don't care to repeat.
One of the most amazing instruments I have ever heard is the harpsichord. The sound is very haunting. It was at a private party and the guy playing it was very skilled at extemporizing. It seemed he could go for hours without repeating. Too bad the invention of the piano pretty much killed that instrument.

I had piano lessons starting when I was 5. In 4th grade I switched to the coronet and trumpet. I played that until HS when I switched to singing.
I have tried a little guitar and banjo. I may go back to those when I retire and have time to practice.

I've taken lessons in both guitar and orchestral bass. I was no good at either, really, and entirely too unsure of myself. Both were back in elementary school.
I tried to learn the chanter in order to play the bagpipes, but the only sounds I could produce sounded like a dying cow. I can play the bodhran, the pennywhistle, and the jaw harp with varying proficiencies. All three rely more on innate musical talent more than learned techniques, I feel. I also sing passingly well. |

Classically trained violinist from age 5 through 19. I was in an ensemble group and the local symphony orchestra, etc.
Taught self to play bass guitar in HS and was in rock band. Haven't played much in the last 20+ years though. If you get to the level I was at, you either turn professional and do little else, or you go and lead a normal life. If I can't spend the hour+ per day to stay in concert form then I get too frustrated by my suckiness. So, I just don't play. |

I self-taught the saxophone, I took piano lessons (but more enjoyed self-teaching), played flute for a year in middle school, and now my husband & I have CDJ turntables. I love music. I love percussion more than anything, tho, but don't know why I don't play it much. I have a conga and it's cool playing in drum circles.

Played the Saxophone from 4th grade or so up to 8th. Got pretty good considering i didn't play much. Kinda helps that the sax has to probably be the easiest instrument to pick up, learn, and play well without having any talent. (none of that wierd lip stuff from the brass, doesnt take as much air as the flutes, no holes to cover or not cover like the clarinets...all in all its really very simple). Stopped playing many years ago. havent openend the case in years. Could probably squeek out a song if i had to though.
Messed around with the clarinet a little, same with piano. Could still bust out a piano song if i had to...but might take me a while of reading the music to figure it out. I really liked the sound from the bass clarinet.

I played trombone from the 6th grade to the 8th.
I switched electives because of friends, which I now regret. I always meant to keep practicing after I quit the band, but stuff happened, you know? Then, some cur-dog stole my 'bone! ![]()

Started out playing the trumpet in 6th grade Mediocre at best.
Switched over to baritone/euphonium after my director said I would be pretty good at it. Well I guess he was right. Played through out HS solo here and there opened up a field show once, my solo was the opening notes of the entire show damn that was fun. I can still play that solo and I am 10 years removed from it.
Played baritone/euphonium for 3 years in college. I was okay played for enjoyment really.
After my third year of college I switched to tuba because I was about to kill my section leader. Besides tuba, Low Brass, playing some bass. We were powerful. Played it for the remainder of my college career for four years (I got my masters). I was one of the only guys to actually graduate for awhile. We were a pretty hard partying group. During that time I played tuba I still played baritone during B-ball season in the Spirit Band.
I also have gotten the opportunity to play baritone again for the Spirit Band.
So I guess this about makes me the penultament band geek, proud.
I guess it was worth it though. I got to go to Kansas City, Baltimore, New York, and Seattle, FOR FREE. Sit on the floor of the Final Four Game. Let's see where else: Lexington, KY; Buffalo, NY; Indianapolis, IN; Lincoln, NB; Alamo Bowl,. A few places I never would have gotten to go, so yeah it was and still is well worth it.

I have six years training with the Trumpet and French Horn.
I dropped those when I picked up the guitar (who hasn't? ![]() I always wanted to learn to play classical cello or maybe try piano. Not classical piano, but more the bluesy stuff like Jellyroll Morton and the like.

Been on the piano for 16 years, picked up ensemble percussion when I started high school- fell in love with the marimba and vibes. Playing four mallets is worth every blister!! Currently self teaching the guitar, waiting for those callouses to develop. Dabbled in the harp arena when my younger sis has the one from the HS home.
