It doesn't get stranger than this

BERLIN (Reuters) - The trial of Armin Meiwes, the German computer expert who gained worldwide notoriety by killing and eating a willing victim, is to begin, in a case of sexually inspired cannibalism so perplexing it could make legal history.

Meiwes, 42, described by his lawyer as a "gentleman of the old school", has confessed to killing a Berlin man who answered an advertisement he had posted on the Internet seeking a fit man "for slaughter."

They met in Meiwes's elegant half-timbered home in the town of Rotenburg, central Germany, in March 2001. Meiwes killed the man, named only as Bernd-Juergen B., with a kitchen knife and filmed the deed on video tape which may be shown at the trial.

Meiwes's lawyer Harald Ermel said it took the victim nearly 10 hours to bleed to death and that he had repeatedly urged Meiwes to keep on cutting him.

Meiwes cut up the body and stored parts in his freezer. "He believes he ate about 20 kilograms and there were about 10 kilograms left over," said Ermel.

"He defrosted it little by little and ate it."

Police arrested Meiwes over a year later, in December 2002, after a tip-off from someone who had spotted another of his adverts on the Internet.

Meiwes is expected to repeat his confession at the trial that will be attended by reporters from all over the world. He is already planning to write his memoirs, his lawyer said.

Meiwes told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag last week: "I am guilty and regret what I did." He said he had eaten his victim because he wanted to make him part of himself, a desire that he had satisfied and that would not recur.

Professor Andreas Marneros, director of the Halle Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, said: "This is cannibalism as a sexual perversion, it's a phenomenon that has been known about for centuries. I have examined four such people."

LEGAL DILEMMA

Prosecutors in the city of Kassel say a psychiatric examination found Meiwes is not insane but they added that his victim may have been incapable of rational thought.

So while prosecutors acknowledge the victim said he wanted to die, they are seeking a life sentence on a charge of murder motivated by sexual urges.

Meiwes's lawyer wants him to be convicted of "killing on request", a form of illegal euthanasia which carries a sentence of six months to five years.

The problem, legal experts say, is that Meiwes's victim wanted to be eaten. That could make a murder charge difficult to apply, while the lesser charge of manslaughter carries a term of 15 years or considerably less, after which Meiwes would be free.

Professor Arthur Kreuzer of the Institute for Criminology at Giessen University, said the case might make legal history.

"This is killing undertaken for both killer and victim and cannot be regarded as the worst case of premeditated killing.

"But I don't think it is a killing on request either because it was not an altruistic, but an egoistic deed."

Kreuzer said the case may go as high as the Federal Constitutional Court and that prosecutors may be forced to consult new medical experts to assess Meiwes's mental state.

Meiwes's lawyer has revealed that his client had four other guests in his home, but let them all go.

"There was a teacher, a cook, a hotel employee and a student. He had them hanging from the ceiling head down and they had no chance of freeing themselves. One felt sick, the other didn't want to go on, he let them all down."

Ermel said Meiwes chatted about cannibalism with at least 280 like-minded people on the Internet. In Germany about 200 people on the Internet were offering to be slaughtered, 30 ready to do the slaughtering and 10 to 15 wanting to watch, he said.

Cynthetiq 12-03-2003 08:11 AM

everytime I think that books and movies have odd ideas in them, the world serves up things like this... which by the way has been going on from time immemorial we just now have ways of tracking it and disseminating the information much faster.

Uh, yeah. I can see how the guy has no intentions of doing it again, especially after posting another advert.

rocinante2003 12-03-2003 08:38 AM

"But I don't think it is a killing on request either because it was not an altruistic, but an egoistic deed."

thats it right there, sure the victim "wanted" to be killed, that might not be right because they said he might not have been rationally thinking, but still, He should not not not be charged with the euthansia-like charge, that one should be reserved for actual euthansia. This was murder, admitted, fair and premeditated. I don't understand how any docter could call him "sane" when HE KILLED AND ATE A MAN AND VIDEO TAPED IT! is the fact escaping the docters? WTF! honestly,

herostar 12-03-2003 01:41 PM

Those Germans are weird. That's the grossest thing I've heard all week.

Aphrodite 12-03-2003 02:05 PM

I have to say, its a very believable story -- mankind, with there infinite (and sometimes malicious) imagination, is very capable of horrible deeds.

louiedog 12-03-2003 06:13 PM

If the "victim" was capable of rational thought and just didn't want to die anymore I honestly don't really care what this guy did. He didn't hurt anyone unwilling. True it's about the sickest thing I've ever heard but like with just about everything, as long as there are no negative effects on anyone not consenting, who cares what people do? Of course like I said this is assuming the victim consented to it which seems a little difficult to believe unless they were in an unfit mental state.

Cherry 12-04-2003 03:29 AM

Hrm.

It really makes a person think twice about accepting the compliment "You're so cute, I could just eat you up."

hu-man 12-04-2003 05:22 AM

I'm just wondering what kinds of chatrooms these conversations take place in... and how you throw the suggestion in a sentence...

slaughter_guy: Oh, I'm 42 years old, I live in Düsseldorf. I have no wife, but a very lovely dog called Stab. I like long walks in the forest, drinking cognac by the fireplace listening to opera, and butchering other people and eating them. A/S/L?

please_eat_me_now: Oh, that sounds nice... My favourite pastimes are collecting stamps, building model ships, cutting limbs off myself, and I have a deep fantasy about somebody eating me. I'd LOVE to try that sometime. It must feel really good.

aurigus 12-04-2003 05:30 AM

slaughter_guy: LOL OMG!!

I wonder how long it will take for SNL to turn this into a skit? Reminds me of the the one with Hannibal Lecter in his College years - that was a good one :D

opey99 12-04-2003 07:40 AM

that is some seriously sick stuff, I'd hate to be in that courtroom if they showed the video, I'm thinking it would likely be a vomitorium!

krwlz 12-04-2003 07:56 AM

That is disgusting and perverted... moraly. But legaly, the man wanted to be killed. How can you really bring him up on homacide? As disgusting as it is, he should be brought up on the charges of either man slaughter or killing on request.

You can't simply adjust the laws, or else the laws are worthless.

LewisCouch 12-04-2003 07:58 AM

No home is complete without a slaughter room. I have mine right next to the Vlad the Impaler shrine.

German Canibalism Case

Not sure if this has already been posted as search function is out.

How wierd is this though?

A German man who confessed to killing and eating a man he met through a website for cannibals has been charged with murder, prosecutors have said.
The 41-year-old suspect, identified as Armin M, is alleged to have killed the 43-year-old victim in March 2001 in the town of Rotenburg in central Germany, after meeting him through the site.

He then carved up and froze portions of the man's flesh, later eating some of it, prosecutors allege.

The crime was apparently carried out with the victim's full consent, however state prosecutor Hans-Manfred Jung told French news agency AFP that the victim's supposed "death wish" did not change the fact that the killer had wanted to commit murder.

The suspect's arrest in December last year caused a sensation in Germany, as the country's tabloids competed to report the most grisly details of the case.

'Sexual enjoyment'

The suspect and victim met in early 2001, after Armin M is said to have posted a personal ad on several websites and in chatrooms asking for "young, well-built men aged 18 to 30 to slaughter", the German daily newspaper Bild reported at the time of his arrest.

The victim was a 43-year-old Berlin computer technician who had sold his car, written a will and taken the day off work to sort out what he called a "personal" matter.

He then went to Armin M's home, where the pair reportedly agreed to cut off his penis.

The victim was then allegedly stabbed to death - still apparently with his approval - and cut into pieces.

The whole incident was filmed on videotape, and prosecutors say that the whole crime was committed for the purpose of sexual enjoyment.

Authorities were tipped off by internet surfers who found the requests on various sites.

Mr Jung said there was no evidence that Armin M had been involved in further cases, however several people with whom he had been in contact on the internet are still under investigation.

A date for the trial has yet to be set.

water_boy1999 12-04-2003 10:35 AM

OMG!!!! This is just sick!!! I am really at a loss for words and that is difficult to do.

rogue49 12-04-2003 11:19 AM

Evil is alive and well.

Sorry, even if someone gives you permission
stabbing them to death and then eating them is not permissible.
The semantics not withstanding.
You can prosecute a person for taking advantage of those not mentally capable.
(children, mentally disabled, depressed, etc.)
This is murder of the 1st degree. (planned & intentional)

Get rid of him, and we can move on the more productive things.
Once you have done this, you have given up your rights to life.

mortius 12-04-2003 11:56 AM

that's pretty damn nasty. Not sure what's worse, wanting someone to cut off your member, wanting someone to eat you or eating someone.

*shudder*
