Long hair and shower time

My hub was giving me a hard time the other day for taking "too long" to shower. I have thick, naturally curly hair that hangs down to the top of my butt. I shampoo and condition my hair EVERY time I shower.

To take a basic shower - wash me, wash/condition my hair - takes me close to half an hour. Add in shaving legs and such - it can run up to 45 minutes.

So - am I a slow washer or are other long haired people taking just as long as me?

You're slow. Trust me. I may be a guy but that doesn't mean that I'm open to accusing women of taking too long to prep themselves for the day.

I live in a family of 5. Before my parent's divorce, my sister used to shower the day before (She was younger before she discovered that beauty is important) and that worked well while everybody else would shower in the morning. But now, I live with my dad, stepmom and 2 other step bro and sister and it's fukin hard to actually just shower fast and let others get clean up so that they can go to work and school.

So, you can either just shave and do your female stuff the night before and that way, your morning showers can be faster and your bub wouldn't have to complain. Or better yet, shower together. That might take longer though.

my hair is right at the waiste. when i wash and completely dry it it takes between forty minutes and an hour. mostly i get dry enough to not get sick ( very weak immune system ) and go my way.

if he is complaining you should skip shampooing every single shower. i am also told that people who wash it so often have deep regreets later in life. it supposedly dries the hair out badly.

yeah, such regular shampooing and conditioning isn't good for your hair. I shampoo/condition maybe once or twice a week, and I shower twice a day; takes me anywhere from 5 minutes to half an hour.

Omg...your hair is so long...

Mine's a lil past my shoulder and on a quick day it takes me 5 min to shower and 5 min to dry, dress, etc. but perhaps 15-20 min, since I enjoy soaking in the warm water, in which case 30 min for a shower isn't really too long unless it's the twice a day or something.

Ps. bermuda, why is shampoo/conditioning regularly bad? [I don't blow dry and I don't tie up wet hair] Is it build up or something? *worried*

You know - I've heard it's bad - but I can't see how one could not wash their hair once a day. I mean, by just the next day my hair seems greasy to me and I feel the need to wash it.

Oh yeah, and 45 minutes definitely seems a little long. I understand that it takes longer since it's longer than most people, but I would think you could be done in 30 minutes.

All that hair (and the mention of your butt) sort of got my attention there.

Anyhoo, I used to have really really long hair a lot like yours, naturally curly, very thick, down to my waist. The whole shower process usually took me 20 minutes.

Now I have very short hair--I usually keep it between 1 and 2 inches long. And now the whole shower procees usually takes me... 20 minutes.

So I'm not convinced that hair has much to do with it. I know I spend a fair amount of time sort of zoning out in the shower.

I used to have dreads down to the middle of my back. Those took me 30 minutes to wash and get them really clean.

My hair used to be fairly long to the middle of my back. My hair is very fine and straight so I imagine there's a difference between straight and curly. My mother takes longer to care for her hair than I do. I normally take half an hour to wash up. I don't usually zone out in the shower. I do wash my hair daily. I've tried going to every other day but even when I do that consistantly then by halfway through the second day my hair is so oily that it looks wet almost. Gross. So I have to wash every day. I used the conditioner on the ends every day as well. I usually take about half an hour. I've I really rush I can get it down to 15/20 min but then I'm as thorough. I do end up going even longer when I shave as I shave everything below my neck. Takes me way longer.

Hubby loves to zone out in the shower so I don't have to worry about him complaining at least.

I'm usually in the shower for half an hour, because I floss and brush my teeth there, in addition to washing my (very short) hair and lathering up with Olay body wash using a little white puff.

I love zoning out in the shower. Sitting there in the hot water... I used to take quick, 5 minute showers, but now Im usually in there for 20 minutes, just standing there.

Not that this has anything to do with long hair

Sounds just like my hair used to be before I got it cut. Down to my ass, thick and naturally wavy. And definitely use conditioner EVERY time.

But I think you are a little bit slow. I would take 20 minutes tops in the shower.

My hair is almost 10 inches long now, it takes a little longer to get the tangles out and rinse all the product out. And now that I've started to remove more than the normal amount of body hair, it takes even longer. But, it's worth it to me.

I'm not bermuDa, but I have extremely thick hair when I have it grown out, and I condition it sometimes. Too much conditioning can lead to a build-up of oils and chemicals in your hair, which could leave it greasy feeling. Buy a decent clarifying and/or deep cleaning shampoo, and use it before you condition to get rid/cut down on the build-up of over-conditioning, hair sprays, gels, mousses, etc.

(EDIT: Also, rinsing your hair thoroughly in cool water AFTER you wash/condition can help get rid of some of the oils.)

For those of you who wash you hair everyday because it gets greasy fairly quickly..

The reason for that is because you wash them too much. Try wash your hair every 2-3 days. It may take a bit of time but eventually your hair will be fine over a period of a few days. I heard it was because washing intensively causes your scalp to lose its natural oils ( or something like that .. ) and works faster to get them back.

I have a shower to myself, and I don't pay water rates, so I often spend upwards of half an hour in the shower. And I have short hair. I just enjoy it.

But if you're paying for the water and your hubby's waiting, 45 minutes is probably a bit excessive.

I have to go with the minority here. I can definatly see spending 45mins in the shower, especially if you have really long hair and want to shave everything right. I have an "average" hair length and tend to spend half an hour in the shower. Then again I can get in and out with a quick shave in about 10 minutes if I have to. I tend to enjoy the break from the rat race and not rushing.

hmm I have no room to talk, I have short hair and my showers are SHORT when they're 15 minutes. They tend to be 20-25 minutes on avg, getting as long as 30 minutes. I can't help it, its a lot more soothing than just resting on a couch. Feels great on the neck too.

It depends on the person. Most often its because the person uses bees wax or a thick grease to lock the hair. Thick grease holds dust and is nearly impossible to wash out but it locks the hair quicker. The alternative if to use a thinner grease but have a lot of stray hairs and have to constantly retwist your hair for at least a year. The long way doesn’t lock as quickly but makes your hair cleaner in the long run.

That's probably just because your scalp produces oil at faster rate than other people who don't wash their hair every day (like me). Personally, a daily shampoo makes my hair stringy, dry and break a lot. It takes to natural oils a lot better than the ones that conditioners try to reapply after those harsh shampoos.

Correctemundo. (Sorry, sometimes I think I'm the Fonz.) I've even heard that our hair is self-cleaning... if you give it enough time (a couple of weeks) without any chemicals and just rinse it with water, the oil producing glands 'figure out' how much oil to produce and keep you hair nice, shiny, healthy and moist. I'm just waiting for a three-week safe zone to be temporarily oily so that I can save on shampoo.

I usually take about a half hour or so, my hair is long also, and shaving my legs etc just adds to it.

Quit shaving your legs for a few weeks and then give him something to really complain about

start taking your time in the shower. spend a hour or more in there every day use it as a time to relax. then when your in there 90 min a day and he complains go back to the 45 min shower and tell him you cut the time in half and thats the best you can do.

If your spending 45 min in the shower it just means your not rushing through it like 99% of people seem to think they need to do. I dont see any reason why you should try to rush yourself in there.

Basicly slow down relax and enjoy life if you rush through it today your just going to wake up again and need to start over anyway so why hurry.
