Shoot. The kid would have been better off swillin' some beer! At least then he wouldn't be known as the frat guy who got too messed up on water. Ha!
Also, somewhere along the lines I heard that excessive water could get you "high". Something like the Oxygen content in so much water can get ya. That's probably why he felt dazed. Anyone else heard of this happening? Gettin' messed up off of Oxygen that is?

The liver and kidneys can only take so much of anything before they get overloaded, I would think. That sodium imbalance that the article mentioned wouldn't be anything to scoff at, either.

I don't want to try to read their minds, but I bet I can. They were probably trying to haze safely, and thought chugging water, while unpleasant, wouldn't be as bad as making them chug beer, like was probably done prior to their banishment. Besides, they can tell the administration and their nationals that their pledgeship is dry- no alcohol.
I had a friend at a very religious school, and you would be suprised at the creativity shown in hazing "effectively" without any alcohol. However, I doubt that religious reasons were behind this incident not involving alcohol. SMU is not all that Methodist. Many national fraternities are advocating "dry" pledgeships. I think it's a good idea, but maybe they should advocate "safe" pledging instead. |

Just like anything, drinking something in excess causes problems, as someone said, the kidneys and such can't take all of the extra water and stuff. I remember being told that you don't want to drink to much water, but I don't remember the whole story. I think it's something to do that to much water gets into the blood stream, which allows less oxygen to circulate the blood stream or something along those lines.
