How methodists get hazed

SMU pledge critical after chugging water
Associated Press

DALLAS -- A 21-year-old student at Southern Methodist University remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday after chugging water in an off-campus competition with fraternity members.

Braylon Curry, a pledge with Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, drank an unknown amount of water from a gallon container early Saturday morning and was hospitalized hours later after becoming dazed and incoherent, Dallas police said.

Authorities said they were continuing their investigation but had not ruled out hazing.

"Preliminarily it would appear so, but until we know the details, we can't make that final judgment," said Jim Caswell, vice president of student affairs.

SMU officials and Dallas police still were trying to determine details of the incident Monday. According to a police report, some alcohol was consumed at the competition but Curry drank only water.

The fraternity, which only this spring was reinstated at SMU after a three-year suspension for hazing, has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, Caswell said.

Caswell said he does not know how many of the fraternity's seven members were at the competition. He refused to discuss specifics on the fraternity's prior hazing incident.

The fraternity's national office in Baltimore declined comment.

"This was a complete surprise, and in allowing them to return, there was a complete understanding they would comply with all the policies and their own national policies," Caswell said.

The day before the incident, the school held an anti-hazing event on campus and produced a half-page advertisement that defined hazing and outlined its consequences, Caswell said.

Curry, a junior business major, transferred from Austin College to SMU this fall.

Excessive consumption of water can be fatal, causing pulmonary edema, a condition in which water enters the lungs, and hyponatremia, a sodium imbalance brought on by excess fluid consumption.

The average person can consume up to 15 liters of water in a 24-hour period, but drinking too much too quickly can swell brain cells and cause head pressure, said Dr. Greg Blomquist, an emergency room doctor at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

Shoot. The kid would have been better off swillin' some beer! At least then he wouldn't be known as the frat guy who got too messed up on water. Ha!

Also, somewhere along the lines I heard that excessive water could get you "high". Something like the Oxygen content in so much water can get ya. That's probably why he felt dazed. Anyone else heard of this happening? Gettin' messed up off of Oxygen that is?

There was a local kid at some SUNY school who died from a case like this. Too much water.

Ya, I have heard you can get "drunk" from water. This wouldn't be the first case of it happening. I can't remember the medical specifics of how it happens.

I know these guys who insit on chugging a 2 liter bottle of Coke before every drinking session - for some reason they think it helps cure hangovers by lining the stomach or some shit.

The liver and kidneys can only take so much of anything before they get overloaded, I would think. That sodium imbalance that the article mentioned wouldn't be anything to scoff at, either.

O, stupidity, how you confound me.

Why is it significant that this is a black fraternity?

I don't want to try to read their minds, but I bet I can. They were probably trying to haze safely, and thought chugging water, while unpleasant, wouldn't be as bad as making them chug beer, like was probably done prior to their banishment. Besides, they can tell the administration and their nationals that their pledgeship is dry- no alcohol.
I had a friend at a very religious school, and you would be suprised at the creativity shown in hazing "effectively" without any alcohol.
However, I doubt that religious reasons were behind this incident not involving alcohol. SMU is not all that Methodist. Many national fraternities are advocating "dry" pledgeships. I think it's a good idea, but maybe they should advocate "safe" pledging instead.

Just like anything, drinking something in excess causes problems, as someone said, the kidneys and such can't take all of the extra water and stuff. I remember being told that you don't want to drink to much water, but I don't remember the whole story. I think it's something to do that to much water gets into the blood stream, which allows less oxygen to circulate the blood stream or something along those lines.

Water actually gets its way into the lungs causing the person to "drown" in a way. Its usually how deaths on "ecstasy" occur. The person drinks more water than their body can handle and end up in a coma.
