This is the point these women are trying to make. Just because our society sexualizes breasts doesn't make it fair. These women are saying that this law is equitable to Muslim laws. Muslim women aren't allowed to show as much SIMPLY because thier society/religion dictates it. They want the freedom to sunbathe nude. Most men don't walk down the street with their shirts of but they lounge around, or work in their backyard that way on hot days often. That's where I would want to freedom to take off my shirt.

I really don't think our societal rules and mores can be remotely compared to certain Muslim society's laws. We don't cut off women's clits to desexualize them or beat the crap out of them/throw acid on them/kill them if they wear (or not wear) a certain outfit or otherwise attempt to have individuality. Sounds pretty extremist to me to compare how women are treated in those societies to the way they are treated in Florida.

I could agree with nudity in your backyard or your or someone else's personal property (like at a party where it's allowed) more than walking down a street. I disagree with this in front yards and other places where public display is more apparent. In Florida you see men shirtless all the time due to climate, and I am sure women would follow suit if it was legal. We are a sexually paradoxical society, and very perverted under a veneer of morality. I really don't think it would be productive to make this legal in public places due to accident potential and leering/harassment.

edit: clarification

look i'm all for equal rights here. i just think women use their chests more in a sexual way than men do(when was the last time a guy got payed to take off only his shirt anyways ala girlsgonewild).honestly i think if the law got passed nationwide(i think they have the right in ohio?some case about sunbathers if i remember correctly) most wouldn't even use it to their advantage like the candadians are saying in the thread.i just think maybe we should stop and see it from a pschological approach that's all. if nudity was commonplace how far would future generations have to go to get off?i'm only saying we should examine the topic at diffrent angles.i think sex and the female body sex are wonderful things i just don't want them to be cheapened even more than they have already. it's one thing for women to work outside on their tan or wear some designer dress with lots of cleavage but another thing entirely to see them bodypainted with the words "eat me out" on them. but like i said before in my first post i haven't altogether made my mind up yet either way becuse part of me sees no problem with nudity and women being equal to men in one more respect..

All people are beautiful. If you refuse to look beyond a few socially defined norms of beauty then I have a great deal of sympathy for you.
No, that wasn't my intent. I was just trying to shed some light on this topic, because I think the reality of the situation is somewhat different from what I, and I bet a lot of guys first thought when they read about topless women mowing lawns and such. I guess I should only speak for myself, but I first imagined a tall, blond girl with big boobs in the sun, and yes, I liked that image.
Frankly, though, if they are fighting for topless equality, these women would be much better suited to fight a good fight. A bunch of Playboy Bunnies would not be seen the same as normal people. It would be seen as an extension of sex into everyday life, rather than an extension of a man's rights to women.

I understand that nudity does not equal sex, and was actually trying to make that point and steer this conversation away from statements like I made earlier, such as this:

But then I thought about it, and if all women started mowing the lawn topless, I don't think it would demystify it. I would still want to watch that. Imagine the bouncing when they tried to pull the cord and get the mower started.
I'm still not sure that I agre with it, given the difference between male and female breasts, but I just wanted to clarify for those of you who thought I was saying that only pretty women have a right to be topless.

I'll say pretty much what everyone else has said...I think it is fine for women to go topless. Personally I think that if women were allowed to go topless whenever they wanted, then the public would start accepting that that is the norm. Obviously there are men and women who will find this offensive or sexual but there are people now that find someone whereing a bikini offensive or sexual. It would be no different (eventually). Initially it would be a "new" thing but people would get used to it.

Now, the question I have is how many women would want to do it? I hate to say it but through discussions with my wife, breasts are not too comfortable when you run with them without a bra on. If you have large breasts even walking might be uncomfortable without some sort of support. Legalizing it, in my mind will not result in all women suddenly going topless. Those that want to, will be able to but in all likelyhood most still won't.

And as for men going topless..I would have to agree that some men should not be allowed to go topless. And then there is, of course, the whole question of spandex...but let's not go there right now.

This whole thing reminds me of the men who sue to be in women's beauty pageants. Occasionally they win the suit, but you still don't hear of men flooding Miss America with applications. Just one more frivolous lawsuit that makes for a laugh.

this is legal in Columbus, OH. As far as I know it has been for some time, but I've only ever seen one person invoking their right -- it was at the annual community festival at Goodale Park, after dark, when everybody left their was pretty much drunk.

I say let them go topless if it makes them more comfortable.

I don't think it's a major civil liberties issue, but if they want to go topless I see no real reason not to let them.

the female chest isn't more objectionable than the male chest.
