ALL CAPS...WHATS WRONG WITH IT?

A LOT OF PEOPLE SEEM OFFENDED BY ALL CAPS...?WHY?
I DO IT A A LAZY HUNT AND PECK TYPER...could do all lowercase, but still slow...no caps/punctuation or spelling..???
...SO AGAIN WHY ARE YOU UPSET BY CAPS???

LOVE YA ALL,BOBBY

mb99usa 10-30-2003 07:56 AM

All caps denotes emphasis or yelling. Without changing case it is hard to express emotion.

Redlemon 10-30-2003 08:04 AM

Also, usability studies have shown that ALL CAPS is difficult to read; if you insist on ignoring the shift key, go with all lowercase (which is also annoying, but less so).

quadro2000 10-30-2003 08:06 AM

It's annoying to read.

Cubby 10-30-2003 08:09 AM

Its harder to read. Its annoying to read. Being a hunt and peck typer shouldn't matter. Learn to use both hands...one to peck and one to hold the shift key down once per sentence.

Blahman 10-30-2003 08:11 AM

It's hard on me eyes...

Redlemon 10-30-2003 08:14 AM

I'd also like to take this moment to note that when everthing is in red italics, I can't read a damn word of it.

cchris 10-30-2003 08:23 AM

WHEN I USED TO DO AUTOCAD DRAFTING OUR DRAWING NOTES WERE DONE IN ALL CAPS. I LIKE IT. IT IS REAL EASY FOR SOMEONE WHO ALWAYS FORGETS TO PUT CAPS WHERE THEY BELONG. nOW HOWEVER, i TEND REMEMBER TO USE MY CAPS SO IF THE CAP LOCK IS ON i MAKE A MESS.

I hate all caps, I find it annoying.

I'd much prefer all lower case.

So true. I used to highlight it to get the contrasted colors, but now I refuse to be manipulated like that.

Also - when I'm King, I will make it a capital crime to sell a keyboard with a Caps Lock key on it - I hate those damn things - I'm always hitting it by mistake, and look up to see a paragraph of all caps.

ARTelevision 10-30-2003 08:54 AM

Yes, it's a usability issue.

"Text typed in all caps is also difficult to read, leading to impairment of a site's usability. This is because the eye needs the movement associated with each letter in order to recognize the word. With capitals being the same size (no ascenders or descenders), the eye must slow down to gather information. "

I would agree with this. My boss types in all caps. I bet all the companies he sends emails to think he's yelling at them.

SiN 10-30-2003 04:34 PM

most people don't like being yelled/shouted at.

that's what's wrong with all caps.

spectre 10-30-2003 08:30 PM

Like everyone else said, it's considered shouting. Don't worry about it though bobby, you've been around long enough to yell at us. ;)

Semi-Normal 10-31-2003 09:04 AM

I'm with everyone else on the caps; it makes the post hard to read, and as redlemon said, same with coloured text. Giant blocks of unparagraphed text are even worse, especially when they come sans punctuation.

I tend to skip posts I can't easily read.

SecretMethod70 10-31-2003 09:13 AM

I don't care about the yelling context - bobby, you've been around long enough where I know you're not yelling at me ;) - but I will say it IS harder to read all caps than regular letters.

I'd rather read all caps than all red though .... *ahem* Ashton *ahem* ;) :icare:

I remember living with architecture students who were being graded on their ability to use that uniform style of writing when drafting. In the Navy, we are taught a similar, all block-caps style in bootcamp to use in official places, for example a log book.

However, there is a difference between that and typing in all caps on a forum or in a chat room. Those uniform handwriting styles are to enhance legibility when clarity is very important. People naturally have different handwriting styles, some neater than others. But by forcing everyone to "draw" their letters rather than write them, it becomes very clear what they are trying to get across. On a computer, the typefaces don't have that problem or illegibility. Netiquette, the commonly accepted "rules" for communication over the internet, holds that all caps are considered screaming or yelling. Judicious use of caps helps to get your point across. You could capitalize a SINGLE word, to put a particular emphasis on it. If the entire piece is capitalized, I lose that ability to accentuate words or ideas. To put an entire sentence in it drives home the fact that it's an important point that I want you to take away. NOW STOP TYPING IN ALL CAPS!

Its not polite? I hate it =P

justin218 10-31-2003 07:03 PM

I'm not used to reading it, so it is annoying to read. Some people I know write in all caps, since they're used to it. I guess if you're used to it, it is ok.

anti fishstick 10-31-2003 11:22 PM

you know phonetically, i read all caps in my head differently than if i'm reading lowercase. and when read in my head that way it's more annoying.

I more than agree. Not just annoying, VERY annoying. It's fine to like emphasize a word or something, but writing in it, overusing it is like a crime.

jbrooks544 11-01-2003 08:33 AM

All caps is much harder to read than the correct mixture of lower and upper, or just lower. This is one of the most basic pieces of knowledge for anyone creating marketing materials, layouts, etc. If you ever see a sign for a business, or on a truck, or on a flyer, etc. that uses all caps you can assume it is done by a rank amateur and that it will be significantly less than effective marketing. BECAUSE IT IS HARD TO READ!! <stop shouting>

splck 11-01-2003 09:14 AM

I usually skip reading posts in all caps...also when they are in a weird colour....like red.

Force 10 11-01-2003 02:29 PM

Despite the "yelling" issue, CAPS are hard to read.

WarWagon 11-01-2003 05:51 PM

I do a lot of AutoCAD and Inventor 6 work too, but I still hate typing in all caps. I hate handwriting in all uppercase too, but I can go back and forth between the two writing styles no problem.

Gungwhooza 11-02-2003 08:36 PM

Its just really annoying. like that one simpsons where lisa is trying to get downtown and the mad russian man is telling here where to go but she runs away cus he was yelling at her...if ya know waht i mean.

Eldaire 11-03-2003 12:19 AM

Some people interpret it as shouting and it makes them feel insecure.
